Those be some real dingbatters! They must still think the old steel bridge is there! I 've waited for those tugs to come by 12-1 am many times. bet you didnt see me getting ready to board? LOL!
Thanks for sharing, I boat on the UMR near Louisiana, Mo. on a 38' rec boat, I stay as far away as possible from the tows. I can't imagine anyone stupid enough to want to get close. Did the rec boat call you on the VHF ?
Are you getting rich in that line of work? I thought I'd do OK being an aircraft mechanic but that didn't turn out to be true. Everyone HATES aircraft mechanics and stole our pensions and slashed our pay. Now I am in my 50's and don't have a house and no pension. That's it. Game over. How are things in the marine trades?
This is true even up on the upper Ohio. I work a little boat and usually only have one piece at a time and they still don't get out the way. I think they need to take the same test we do to run a boat out here.
i go through the same thing all the time in florida, blow 5 wissles and hope for the best. not every one who own a boat is a fool but every fool owns a boat
Im assuming the shaking is from cavitation from full reverse correct? also are all the air pressure sounds controls? Seems odd that the throttles/transmissions would be operated via an air link. But then again I dont know much about commercial ships,
Fustrating,Trying to wonder when the pleasure crafts are going cross in front of you.Back in '96 or '97 I saw a boy scout troop canoeing down the missisippi @ lower Memphis bridges when they (about 8 canoes) decided to cross in front of a s/b 35 barge acbl tow lining up on the bridge. the towboat stopped in time, landed on the bank just before the head went under the bridge, thankfully.Pilot on watch called MSO to report the near incident & was told there was nothing they could do about it!
I know the feeling I run into it all of the time during the pester craft season on the tennessee river around pickwick lock except with 15 + barges and I think think these people have death wishes...thanks for sposting this....Capt. Garfield
Where's Core Creek? Do you ever wonder if they have a death wish? They're under power so they could hold it in close to the bank but, hell no! These boats are expensive, not to mention the fact that they're on them. You'd think they'd use thier heads a bit more.
Recreational boaters are such talented and curtious people :rolls eyes: once while we where pushing empties I was walking the tow, when i got to the head they had some kids riding jet ski's under the rake of your barge... never worked up there, mostly worked between baton Rouge and Brownsville so you know we had some crazy cajuns and texans.
They're reupholstering the pilot's chair now. No but seriously, no, that was just my new little MiniDV camcorder on a tripod mounted on the chart table behind me. I thought landlubbers might find it interesting to see what it's like going through a bridge like that. Had no idea it would get that interesting.

We came across a group of dorks on inner-tubes on the upper Mississippi. they thought we would just go around. Flipped one in the wake.

And always determined to see you on the one, also. It never seems to occur to them they can go either way.
