wow i had to listen to this song for american music history in college and my CD was skipping so i found it on here. that was really really good. i play piano some, but mostly by ear. and i saw your not using music are you??
Your technique is obviously very good, hence the brilliance of 1:58 (ish) onwards in the right hand. In places it does sounds a bit monotonous and 'mechanic'. Perhaps you should try varying the gradation of tone in places and bits of rubato, maybe. My old teacher, Philip Martin from the Birmingham Conservatoire (UK) recorded all of Gottschalk's works, and his recording of this piece is first class. Get a recording of it if you can.
don't worry, this was a while ago. it's very different now. ;) here i'm just playing the notes.
and yes i have philip martin's complete recordings of gottschalk's piano works. they're wonderful (wish he recorded the solo transcription of the grand tarrantelle however). thanks for you comment
Robbie your a fag play something for everyone this crap is outdated i know its difficult and congrats but what do you want? do something with your musical talent
Gottshalk`s music was chosen as my niece`s test piece. She said that she had dreaded that it should be one of his pieces, "His music is so tricky and difficult" she always said. I agree and I must add that the melodies are very unique. Listening to them played by the pro`s is very entertaining. I enjoyed Robbie`s interpretation.
yes i agree gottschalk music is very tricky. not as "technically challenging" as many other composers, "tricky" is a good word. a lot of effort must be put into interpretation and voicing to make the piece sound good, more than you'd think as a listener. and he always puts your hands into difficult positions
ah yeah that is a very tricky piece. all i can say is, try your best to make the slow middle section interesting. because it is quite boring. actually i think that section is the most boring (or to put it lighter "least interesting") thing gottschalk ever wrote. ;) thankfully the begining and end balance it out. in fact i learnt it JUST for the finale of the piece. :P good luck with it and all :)
Someone just gave me a very old piece of this sheet music. It is time darkened but hand bound with a pink silk ribbon. I do not play so I am so happy that you did it. And so beautifully. Thank you.

My niece loves Gottschalk, she is now learning the Grande Scherzo. I`ll pass along your comments.
