I went to Holy Angels School on Oakwood Boulevard, and most of my classmates lived in Ida B. Wells. It wasn't always bad. Many of my former classmates have good and bad memories of living there. In the 50's and 60's there were many good social aspects about the place. Things change and people move on.

I grew up there. We cannot continue to blame others for the demise of what quite a few of us called home. It was once so beautiful and the residents were an integral part of the upkeep. However, drugs came into the area and it went down from there. Mothers stop being mothers and Fathers stop being fathers because they became addicts who no longer brought their children up with morals and principles. CHA and Chicago also share the responsibilty for the disrepair Ida B. Wells. Let's not forget that CHA was taken over by the federal govt. in 1995 because of the gross mismanagement of funds. The new CHA plan to demolish the housing and build mixed-income communities is displacing many families.

I grew up in the Ida B. Wells. We moved quite sometime ago, we were warned that this would happen, so we moved well ahead of time and are doing quite well down south. I lived in the extensions 534 E. 37th Street. For the ones who think people in the projects don't work, we did and worked damn hard too. Through the fire we stand stronger than ever. Good people come from projects, remember that.

I remember Ida B. Wells. I remember when I used to go visit my aunt in Lake Meadows, who is also a former resident of Lowles Gardens, right by Ida B. Wells. Everytime you looked out the window, you saw nothing but projects and people started moving out of Lake Meadows cause of all the break ins, and I remember the incident where somebody got robbed on the elevator at Lake Meadows.

It is unfortunate that some people chose to wait to the last minute to relocate but CHA gave ample notice for this process. You do have to recognize that for everyone one productive citizen living there three more are selling drugs, robbing, and killing people! The change is long over due and definitely needed and for the hard working and honest residents of CHA the opportunity to return after the revitalization is stil there.
I think you are being insensative in your assessment of the situation. It's one to grow up at an economic disadvantage, but these people are poor in a way that many can't imagine. They aren't just economically poor, but their spirits and their understanding of the world around them is broken as well.
Public hosuing was a really failed plan. You're concentrating poor minorities in a place where they don't have to work for there property, and its just handed to them. If they were payin for it themselves they would be apprecating and tkaing care of it more.
This work you are doing of documenting changes is very important. To understand the future we have to understand the past. The projects were created to confine the poor. Now they are being evicted. The housing program was not successful in helping people to improve their situation in life. But I salute you for creating something that shows the history of the city and its neighborhoods. I know just what you are talking about.The same thing is occuring in Detroit,Michigan the city where i'm from.They got rid of the Jeffries Projects right across from the new "Motor City Casino",they tore down Herman Gardens from the Cody High school area 12 years ago and promised to rebuild them but never did,check out the vast vacant land at Southfield and Joy Road!Check out the Buffalo Projects on Mound Road at Charles street,they only left a couple of row houses standing out of 50.
Great Video, I lived about 7 blocks from the wells for about 7 years. It's good that the wells are coming down, they are older buildings that have not been maintained well by CHA, It is BAD that the people that live there will not get to partake on the redevelopment that is planned for Ida B. Wells. She is right the city is displacing these long time residents of the area to give people with money easier commutes to the city center.
I am from NYC and grew up in the pjs so this topic is very interestign to me. The funny thing is that I thought that I grew up poor, but the kind of poor that I grew up with is completely different from what the people living in CHA facilities are going through. When I saw it in person I was devastated and to this day a little bit in disbelief.
As a working class Black male in Chicago, I say that when you are renting your residence, sometimes rent free in this case, you are at the mercy of your landlord. It's wrong to complain when you are asked to leave, especially when had a heads up that you would soon be asked to leave. Save your money. Make a downpayment on a house or condo. Pay your note, and no one will ever make you leave your home.

I went to Holy Angels School on Oakwood Boulevard, and most of my classmates lived in Ida B. Wells. It wasn't always bad. Many of my former classmates have good and bad memories of living there. In the 50's and 60's there were many good social aspects about the place. Things change and people move on.

I grew up there. We cannot continue to blame others for the demise of what quite a few of us called home. It was once so beautiful and the residents were an integral part of the upkeep. However, drugs came into the area and it went down from there. Mothers stop being mothers and Fathers stop being fathers because they became addicts who no longer brought their children up with morals and principles. The in turn grew up to not value anything...not even human life. Can't blame anyone but us.

I manage the properties like this and management tries harder then the resident to take care of them. Maint. Dept. doesn't destroy them and poison the young people with the drugs and violence! oh yes there were people who lived there that paid 1200 or more due to their gross monthly income. I lived down there n I remember this one lady who stayed down their making damn near 50,000 a year plus she had foster kids that added to that income. She lived in a 5 bedroom n she was paying more rent than what some people are paying for their home Mortgages. Yet and still she didn't want to move cause she was so use to the project life. Paying no Utility bills and being near to downtown.

Evidently there are many uninformed viewers making unsubstantiated remarks about public housing. People living in public housing do pay rent; the units are not just given away. CHA and Chicago also share the responsibilty for the disrepair Ida B. Wells. Let's not forget that CHA was taken over by the federal govt. in 1995 because of the gross mismanagement of funds. The new CHA plan to demolish the housing and build mixed-income communities is displacing many families.

I grew up in the Ida B. Wells. We moved quite sometime ago, we were warned that this would happen, so we moved well ahead of time and are doing quite well down south. I lived in the extensions 534 E. 37th Street. For the ones who think people in the projects don't work, we did and worked damn hard too. Through the fire we stand stronger than ever. Good people come from projects, remember that.

i understand exactly why there are cameras on one corner and not on the other. one has crime and lazy people who dont wantto work and the other side has people who work for there money! and those people that lived in the projects dont own them. whoever made them owned them! thats why they call them projects! made for them and given to them and dont even work! thats why they knocked them down! good riddens cabrini green and robert taylor homes! I remember Ida B. Wells. I remember when I used to go visit my aunt in Lake Meadows, who is also a former resident of Lowles Gardens, right by Ida B. Wells. Everytime you looked out the window, you saw nothing but projects and people started moving out of Lake Meadows cause of all the break ins, and I remember the incident where somebody got robbed on the elevator at Lake Meadows.

they also feel stupid because they knew that they tore down the projects because of high crime and open drug trade markets but all that came back to the city in more areas since they tore down the jets. so they waste bout $1 bill doing that, talking bout they worrying bout the welfare of the people.

It is unfortunate that some people chose to wait to the last minute to relocate but CHA gave ample notice for this process. You do have to recognize that for everyone one productive citizen living there three more are selling drugs, robbing, and killing people! The change is long over due and definitely needed and for the hard working and honest residents of CHA the opportunity to return after the revitalization is stil there.

I think you are being insensative in your assessment of the situation. It's one to grow up at an economic disadvantage, but these people are poor in a way that many can't imagine. They aren't just economically poor, but their spirits and their understanding of the world around them is broken as well.

Public hosuing was a really failed plan. You're concentrating poor minorities in a place where they don't have to work for there property, and its just handed to them. If they were payin for it themselves they would be apprecating and tkaing care of it more.

This work you are doing of documenting changes is very important. To understand the future we have to understand the past. The projects were created to confine the poor. Now they are being evicted. The housing program was not successful in helping people to improve their situation in life. But I salute you for creating something that shows the history of the city and its neighborhoods. In about 10 years, Ida B. Wells will just be old folks tale.

what a shame tearing down a project that had out of control crime and an overall eyesore to the area. this is what happens when you give something away rather than the residents earning it, generational welfare at its finest. those poor people from these projects, they were such good citizens. now they have to go somewhere else and get free housing and food on the tax payers dime. what a shame.

I know just what you are talking about.The same thing is occuring in Detroit,Michigan the city where i'm from.They got rid of the Jeffries Projects right across from the new "Motor City Casino",they tore down Herman Gardens from the Cody High school area 12 years ago and promised to rebuild them but never did,check out the vast vacant land at Southfield and Joy Road!Check out the Buffalo Projects on Mound Road at Charles street,they only left a couple of row houses standing out of 50.

Great Video, I lived about 7 blocks from the wells for about 7 years. It's good that the wells are coming down, they are older buildings that have not been maintained well by CHA, It is BAD that the people that live there will not get to partake on the redevelopment that is planned for Ida B. Wells. She is right the city is displacing these long time residents of the area to give people with money easier commutes to the city center.

I am from NYC and grew up in the pjs so this topic is very interestign to me. The funny thing is that I thought that I grew up poor, but the kind of poor that I grew up with is completely different from what the people living in CHA facilities are going through. When I saw it in person I was devastated and to this day a little bit in disbelief.

As a working class Black male in Chicago, I say that when you are renting your residence, sometimes rent free in this case, you are at the mercy of your landlord. It's wrong to complain when you are asked to leave, especially when had a heads up that you would soon be asked to leave. Save your money. Make a downpayment on a house or condo. Pay your note, and no one will ever make you leave your home.

Sorry, but the people who have money should get the first choice in where they want to live. Not the people who live rent free. There are so many first time home buyers assistance programs. Often, you don't even need a downpayment. And yes. I have been to "the projects." You fail.

mrwoods123 i think you are believing the wrong myths about the jects no one lives rent free the rent is 30% of your gross montly income So if your check B4 taxes was 1200 your rent was $360.00 if not more depending on the extra people on your lease. Its crazy cuz the more money you made the more your rent went up. So how can you save when the rent is constantly going up with every promotion you get. meanwhile your next door neighboor might not have a good job so they're rent is cheaper

It really doesn't get any lower than that cuz they cut out the free rent thing a long time ago cuz people were taking advantage of it and they wasn't trying to find jobs cause they wanted their rent to stay zero i kno right its said but they were doing it. thats why they changed it to everybody must paid at least 25 bucks whether you are employed or jobless
