  • Who is Karl Roos by the way? And why does he have a day?

  • @bazzatheblue Look for german wikipedia. Use the google translation.

He lived 1878-1940 and after 1918 he was a politician who want an independent state. He was shot by France for alleged espionage, but he was not a spy for germany.

There is no official commemoration for Karl Roos in France. Today, this is still concealed judicial murder. This video is from a 1% vote share party in Elsass who want a independent state. Questionable whether the population wants to know something like this.

  • Is Elsass/Alsace German or French or neither?

  • Comment removed

  • @bazzatheblue now it is french, but there are still living a few young people and almost all old people who could speak a german dialect called elsässisch/alsacian.

Also there are a few parties, f.e. alsace d'abord who want their own state or autonomy.

  • @achimvr ,it is a place that intrigues me,it`s culture seems German, they prefer beer to wine, eat sausage, and the old language is German, now as you say since WW2 the German element is eroded. But to me that seems wrong,i mean the land was conquered by the French quite late, and the Germans took it back in 1871 but i think the French think it`s part of their country, which it obviously is now.But often wonder how the native people think,do they and have they always wanted to be French or German.

  • @bazzatheblue Yes, your are right in drinking and eating habits. But the language german in Elsass/Alsace is nearly dead.

The land belonged to (the ancient) germany up to 1648 (Straßburg 1697). Up to 1789 to german custum union even it was French. Since Napoleon it was frenchified, but the german language persists. 1871-1918 it was german again, also 1940-45. The Nazis were to blame that it was possible to oust the German language. Now they are more French than other French people ;)

  • @achimvr you people must try and enliven the Germanic tongue again, the French governments for decades have been very backward about minority languages,it is strange as France and Germany are now such good friends and allies. Here in Britain they are even trying to bring back Cornish which died out long ago and the other celtic tongues to are quite strong again. But back to your land the German empire was quite lenient to French speakers and didnt make them speak german so much i think.

  • @bazzatheblue This time is over, though i believe now more than 50% of the pupils in Elsass learn German as a foreign language. mainly because there are good German language skills for the job search in Germany and Switzerland. But its only german as a foreign language (better or worse), not the dialect elsässisch.

My grandfathers were forced into the Wehrmacht like most german soldiers. Finally we have democracy, we Germans do our rest and peace with France and all. Never again war. ;)

  • @achimvr .indeed the time of war has passed, sadly we had two terrible wars in the 20th century and are now in peace and finally i think can live with each other,it only took a thousand years.lol

But i mean it would be good if your Germanic Elsass dialect was encouaged to live again by government ,after all the beauty of Alsace Lorraine is its mixture native German elsass folk and their culture and added to that the French culture that came with their occupation and settlement.

  • @bazzatheblue Your last question is difficult to explain: It depends of the time. Since 1789 (French revolution) they belong to France. But after 1871 and a generation in germany the majority rather german. In the last german election 1912 before WW1, the partys who want to join to france or get an own state could only reach a few % vote share.

1918-1940 they want to get their own state. After the time with nazi-germany nobody dares to ask in France for an own state. But now they feel french.

  • Netter Vortrag.
