I played both mass effect games, and they were amazing, especially the 2nd one. One of the best games I ever played. This scene, when played out this way, is just sad though (and I mean that in the real sense of the word, not "sad" as in "pathetic"). Coming from someone who had to use stimulants to get through high school because of the exhaustion of homework, I know what it feels like.

Originally I used Charm to defuse this, then I found out that you can pull a prank on this guy and buy a sedative instead of the stimulant. I love how many different options these games give you for defusing some situations.
