According to wiki, it was originally performed (in the film) by Peter Auty, 1982. But the more famous version was the single performed by Aled Jones, 1985.

For us Finns the only original would then be the one by Peter Auty on the film, "Snowman", broadcast on finnish tv every xmas every damn year. For how long since, I don´t remember.
