This is a great pairing, Callas & Gobbi. What some have called the best opera recording ever made much less the best Tosca ever made was the 1953 La Scala recording. Callas & Gobbi were at their best. As if that was not enough, that Tosca had another brilliant performance, Giuseppe Di Stefano was at his best as Cavaradossi here. I don't know who did Cavaradossi here, I think Renato Cioni.
Luckily I watched this from the far end of the gallery slips. Callas and Gobbi were electrifying. With the knife in her hand you see Callas just as she was as the terrifying Medea - nobody did anger better. How marvelously she times the actions, making everything so real. And Puccini surely knows a thing or two about drama!
I've never yet seen a better Scarpia-Tosca confrontation - they are superb.
I believe this is the performance where she broke a heel off one of her shoes - you can see how uneven her steps are - but she never falters for an instant. Brava! Bravo!
DIVINA in tutti i sensi: voce impareggiabile e presenza scenica da consumata attrice. MERAVIGLIOSA e INDIMENTICABILE ...... ormai nella storia e nei nostri ricordi !!!!
great singing, great artists, a great era. Thank you, whomever, for posting this great, great experience. Never since, have I heard such a riveting rendition.
Es electrizante, sublime y glorioso, algo único en el mundo de la Opera, ver a Gobbi y Callas juntos en esta escena,....que te remuerde por dentro,....he aquí a la Gran Cantatricce Maria Callas.
Gobbi was amaster at everything he touched. We will not see the likes of him again. He was larger than life and a consumate artist and actor. Singers today have much to learn from him.
Pietà umana a parte, questa è la giusta fine di un lurido porco...E Tosca si riscatta dalla sua debolezza. Superba come sempre Maria, grazie per la condivisione.

Thrilling, absolutely thrilling. Maria Callas and Tito Gobbi have been the best pair of Tosca and Scarpia ever.
Thank you for posting this.

These days it's all so melodramatic, but what a great Tosca, Gobbi and Callas made....! Tosca certainly put Scarpia in his place.
'And this was what Tutta Roma was afraid of!' Thank you!
