  • Love Iarla O'Lionaird

  • I want this song played at my wake!

  • oh jesus what

  • I can respect people's different tastes in music, as long as they like Afro Celt Sound System.

  • Had this played at my brother's funeral 2 months ago. The lyrics are very special as Afro Celts were the last live band we saw together a couple of weeks before he died.

  • My first dance practical this semester is to this song! love it.

  • One of the best bands live you'll ever see.

  • They have so many great songs, but IMO this is one of their best.

  • I saw ACSS play in San Francisco in 2001. It was the penultimate concert of my life. The Fillmore levitated with love and rhythm. Such a perfect night and such a perfect band.

  • This is one of the three songs I wish they'd play when I die...

Yep! I like it that much and the lyrics are very appropriate

  • This is my favorite song to dance to. It is the perfect mystical sound environment. Thank you Sinead and Afro Celt Sound System. Who says that magic does not exist? It does.

  • Cameron Effect.com (no space) brought me here. This video is now linked to his web site. A beautiful reassurance that there is a connection. This video, music, and message bring me great comfort and joy. Thank you.

It would be great to know the translation of the guy's words.

  • Stigmata brought me here :P

  • Thought this was Sarah MacClauchlin (spelling)

  • what a fab combination of talent..............

  • AMAZING!

  • what is the guy saying?

  • Nice.

  • A great video for this song. Today I feel like if I lost a very dear person, and this is the medicine I need for my Soul! This band is the best band in the world to me, and I love them to pieces. Sinead has the most awesome voice, and it's perfect with this type of music. Just awesome Irish music!

  • I love this song. It hits me on a molecular level.

  • @muzikizlife10 I like it

  • @muzikizlife10 If you really mean that it means you truly know how to HEAR music:-))

  • I recall there being a house remix to this song and I have not been able to get it out of my head since I heard it in 2000! I am still looking for that remix:( Help!

  • @countofmonetcristo80 I have a version on my channel... neoarchitect2000...

  • Have had this sone in my head for days after watchi8ng Stigmata twice.

Just brought the CD off e-bay. Can't wait til it get's here.

  • What does this song mean?? O:

  • I never knew what this song meant untill mother died

  • my father used to put this on when we would pass through the Rocky Moutains when i was young... ahhhh good times... good times :D

  • Remembering my beautiful son Joe on this day... 13 years since his passing. His spirit lives on through the music xxx

  • @46jgodfrey R.I.P. He is with you still!

  • This was perfect in the "Stigmata" movie soundtrack.

  • love it

  • I (¯`v´¯) it !

  • this is like the best orgasm with music innit

  • I think that a lot of the lyrics of the song are biblical verses? It sounds like things that Jesus said to his disciples? At any rate - what a great song! It's one of my favorites from Afro Celt. Sinead pairs perfectly with them

  • wow. greatttt

  • After all these years, this song still moves me.

  • Afro Celt System is my favorite group. Love all the musical instruments whatever their technical names may be. Especially like bagpipes. I am not Irish but love the beauty of the country there, the Irish spirit and Irish dance. I have always fallen in love with Irish men. They are the best. WIsh I could Release the shackles of earthly existence.

  • j'aaadore ! en suis séduite quasi envoutée !!!

  • What language is the man singing in?

  • @laiming84 He is singing in Irish-his name is Iarla Ó Lionaird...check out his music on Youtube..

  • excellent. Rock On Sinead

  • I played this at the reception after my husband's memorial service...he was a drummer and ACSS was one of his favorite groups. It was perfect, the music and words said it all...

I have passed this video on to many friends struggling with loss, and it has brought such comfort to them as it has to me. Thank you so much for this beautiful piece.

  • Just curious...why is this version of the song in the video so much shorter and sounds slightly different than the album version?

  • Carol....for you! :))

  • Great NEWS - the Afro Celt Sound System will make a live comeback this summer at WOMAD-festival in England !

  • @Cimbarius Do you have more info. about that festival? I like to know where in England it will be at and when?

    Thanks

  • @amazonqueen13 WOMAD-Festival : 23rd -25th of July 2010, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, SN16 9DG, UK

  • I believe there are only like 3 professional herdy gurdy players in the world, one is Nigal Eaton (sorry if I misspelled his name) and he played with Plant/Page, he's amazing! Robert Plant also worked with Afrocelt

  • awesome song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • I never knew there was a video for this!

The original is much longer, and I must say, better...

  • Can anyone translate the non-English portion of this song??? Please?

  • I have seen the band live, and some of the instruments are from Africa, Gailec, etc. just as some of the musicians are. They are a mixed group of musicians from different countries, mixing their music, and they are Great.

  • Omg im so happy i got dis song now.. someone helped me wit wen i saw Stigmata.. wooo hoo g8 song an movie

  • Who is the guy playing the funky guitar-like instrument? The one who totally looks British even if you can only see the bottom half of his face when it gives a close-up. I don't think its James, as he's the one with the drums...

Does Martin Russell (the producer) play? He's the only other consistent person I know works with the band.

(Please message me the answer as well as posting it as a comment for others. Thanks.)

  • (to my previous post)

Sorry, James is the one with the DRUM (singular). I believe that's Johnny with the drumS (plural).

  • he sings in gaelic

  • In What Language Does The Man Sings?

  • Malinke

  • irish is gaelic, just if youre not farmiliar with that name

  • I love and own this song. Thanks for posting, reminded me to listen to a great song with great usage of instruments. Isn't it funny how Sinead sings well at just about everything?

  • The track on the album is much longer. Saw them at the Royal Festival Hall in 2003. Fantastic.

  • The first time I heard this, I was stunned. What a unique sound. I love them, and have everything they have put out. Thanks for posting this.

  • i am so lucky, to have recorded them,in the late 90s. what makes it special;the recording was done, from 3 in studio live perfs. of "eireann". got them off of echoes, here in new york. let me say, they are terrific live. and, especially this song. it fills you with such exstacy! jo was such an amazing musician;he was so committed to his craft and, committed to getting it to peoples ears. thanks forever,jo!

  • Great song. . .first time listening. . .brilliant! : )

  • I wish the band was still together. Sadly after they fulfilled their 5 album contract with the studio they stopped touring and recording. Here's hopping they create more of this beautiful music again someday.

  • Yes , absolutely - we want a new album by the Afro Celts !

  • They have 6 albums out. the last one is from 2005, I have them all! I'm waiting for a new album to come out.

  • The most anoying thing is that, the artist today do not make music like this ;/;/;/;/

  • Simply Beautiful.

  • Anyone know of a similar song that was played on MTV sometime arround 1997-1999?

  • No, but it's possible because they've been around since the early 1900's

  • Correction to my comment before. They have been around since 1993 or so.

  • epic

  • great tune!

check out my channel for more cool celtic tunes :)

  • I saw them in Seattle at the Showbox in 2000 and they were spectacular - it was a wonderful show. Even without Sinead O'Connor their performance was one I will never forget. This is the first time I've ever known there was a video for the song and I'm so glad it's as beautiful as the song is.

  • Thank you very much, Cerridwen.

"Afro Celt Sound System" are still the biggest-selling act on Peter Gabriel`s label "Real World Records". ALL members of the band are GREAT. Iarla O`Lionaird - "The Last Celt" - fantastic voice !

  • My god, this is just so pretty.

  • thanks!

  • What message does this wonderful music transmit?

  • In 1997 Jo Bruce, who played keyboards on Vol. 1 died suddenly of an asthma attack. This devastated the rest of the group. A follow-up album looked unlikely. However, a breakthrough came when the band collaborated with Sinead OConnor, who co-wrote the title track Release with the band. The English-language lyrics are from the perspective of Jo Bruce, as he asks his band mates not to grieve his loss, but to celebrate his release from the shackles of earthly existence.

  • Aw.. it's sad not to have had your dad around. I am very sure that you will have some very special people looking after you all you life, even if you're not aware that they ar there. I hope you find many blessings coming your way in life.

    :-)

  • wow, that brings tears to my eyes to know he is still remembered:) he used to live in my house and moved out as things started to take off for him. he was a lovely gentle man. he came round one day to pick some things up and made me a cup of tea as i was getting ready for work. i was in such a rush i didnt finish it and dashed out the house. i got the call later that day that he had died. when i returned from work our mugs where where we had left them. Jo's cup drained, mine still unfinished.RIP

  • Hi 455.., It is so lovely to hear from some-one that knew my son Jo, to read your story and know that his memory lives on through this beautiful music. I'm just getting ready to visit his grave as it is his birthday today (9th February) - he would have been 41. I will give him your love.

If Sinead reads this, I thank you so much for this song. It has given me much consolation over the years, you really understand the meaning of loss.....thank you again x

  • @AMackem it's definitely a better

    way to think of it

a friend of mine meant to say it the

same way after my best friend and her

family died in a traffic accident- he just was

not as expert as putting it into words

  • @AMackem I thought it was a suicide? Either way, this song lifted Sinead's status in my mind. And a beautiful song made more beautiful by the backstory. Thanks.

  • @AMackem thank you for that...i never knew the deeper meaning of the lyrics to this song...it touches me even deeper now than when i first heard this stunningly beautiful track the first time!

  • does anyone know the orginal of this song (i.e. without the words/singing) and if so, where to get it.

    merci beaucoup

    p.s. WOMAD, amazing

  • Bonjour !! I think this is the only version featured on the Afro Celts CD.

  • I got the original without words, you can add me on msn and I can send u

  • Both the original version (same as this one but longer) and an instrumental version (called "Release It") are on the album Volume 2: Release

They are also available on iTunes.

  • you may be thinking of Dark Moon, High Tide it's on the Gangs of New york soundtrack. it's quite similar but not exactly the same

  • Im not familiar with much of ACSS work and only know of them cause they did a breathtaking music track for an old computer game I loved called Magic and Mayhem-- and its this track you're looking for.

  • Release it is the instrumental version. Its the same without the vocals.

  • :) nice song

  • easily my favourite ACSS track, inspiring ,peaceful, original and restoring my faith in musicians not taking the capitalist road and making music as art and not a money scheme, respect and credit to them!

  • cool effects in this vid. Very interesting.

  • I heard some music on Long Way Down that I eventually tracked to this song. It's not on the album but the Afro Celt Sound System feature other songs on the album.

For anyone interested it is the scene where they camp on the beach in Tunisia in Episode 2. While the music I got from iTunes is close it is still not exactly like the version on LWD.

  • I never thought that two different music styles (African and Celtic) could be blended so well until I heard this band. I absolutely love them! This song is fantastic.

  • what a great track!! unfortunately the video doesn't do the song justice. :(

  • why not? I find it quite innovative (for the time it came out - similar to Faithless/Culture)

  • i love this song so much!!!!

  • Quien tiene la letra de esta canción en la perte que canta en idioma Celta, no lo he podido encontrar....

  • Thanks so much for sharing! An absolute work of genius! Who would of thought to blend African and Celtic music by adding a touch of electronic music? Wow!

  • Excellent. Thank you Cerridwen for posting this.

  • Wow, I've loved this song for years since I got the Stigmata Soundtrack but I've never seen the video.

Now I love the song even more!

  • AfroCelt equates to spectacular world music. Celtic music with African beat, it's made for each other.

  • Another one of my favourites. this song and eireann give me chills. its such beautiful music.

  • I own the CD for this and i never really got what it meant until now. Great Video!!

  • I just love this song:)

  • Thank you, and happy summersolstice:)
