The Ref got that completly correct , he tolg James Hook he had 10 seconds left, they kicked for touch, and all strolled up for the lineout. Now since the ball was off the field and hence out of play , the game could be called to an end, when the time expired.

Italy deserved the win and I can't really fault White for this.

I'd prefer it if the laws were changed so that the attacking team were always allowed to take a lineout resulting from a penalty, even after 80 mins. In that way, they are not restricted in their penalty options by the time on the clock.

I'm not sure if that was Wayne, but either way, White was the referee, and if he says that there's time for a lineout, he can't just change his mind then cos the TMO or whoever told him that time is up. He has the final say.
