I recently went through the hotel and its rooms. It is a sad sight. Hilton group now has the lease on the land, more of the hotel underwent construction. There are a few rooms that are painted, and even have ceiling fans. Alas, the Hilton project has also failed.
Saw this place with my own eyes in July 2010.......What a site:( Really sad sooo much completed yet abandoned. Its eerie when you go in there all the fittings and the work that was done on it.........
Wish the people of Rarotonga had the $ to fix it all up and run it like how they want to as a piece of paradise of their own. Owned and run by the people of Rarotonga.
Just came back from Rarotonga. We saw this derelict unfinished hotel on the way to the waterfall. It seemed to me to be alive and crying out to be cared for. It actually gave me shivers and put me in mind of scary B grade films. BUT, I think your'e right..there is no need for big projects like this. The Island is perfect the way it is and someone needs to take ownership and give back the land.

im a builder and this is absurd, but this is what happens when you employ Italian builders. They should of gotten in an australian company. But it ruins the whole natural habitat anyway. They shouldnt of let them build anything more than wodden huts on places like this.
maybe so, but they shouldnt be building on environments like this. especialy such permanent structures that dont even get finished. Whoever is responsible should be sent back out there to knock it down
I will never forget this place, the pictures show only 40% of the total waste that has gone on here. I went through the complete place while over there before being kicked out by the caretaker dude living in one of the front buildings.
The rooms were all completed and fully furnished now only his area is, the main building at the rear is loaded with Italian marble tiles on crates, shower floors etc.
Now some companys marketing it for Hilton I THINK.
It ain't that easy, when the people incharge of the records dealing with the whole land ownership accidentally "deleted" all the evidence lolooo.. Our family will get our kicks watching people get sick or dying *giggles evily*
The money was *partly* believed to have been financed by an italian mafia in relation to proceeds from illegal gambling rings and casino's. The sheraton is a reminder of how close the county came to total corruption, and as a result in the 1990's the population was only around 10,700 as over half the population left for a more stable government, namely new zealand (Check historical records)
nice video

Just got back from Raro 2 hours ago.. went into the place as well, most amazing thing I've ever seen. Reminds me so much of Chenobyl/Pripyat

Tear it down and open the land up to better more appropriate uses like agriculture.

Its a waste of beautiful land to build that Sheraton hotel.I just saw the topographical or aerial picture of the place... Looks unfinished.

Ditto @ Skusky, was there a couple of days ago and definitely Hilton not Sheraton.

I was there in March 2009. The sign at the front of this building said HILTON - not Sheraton!!!!!!!

my house is just one road away from this sheraton, I wish they'd just knock it down and give it to the rightful land owners.

the story is alot deeper than just "cowboy italian builders" as you are implying, if you read about it then you'll realise.

If I were a rich man, I'd buy it, and then get Rarotongans to finish it, and Rarotongans to RUN it, in THEIR way.
hsd628 2 years ago
i agree, they need to either tear it down and let them have their land back. Or finish it and benefit the local community.

Earlier this year they built a mock up room and a sales office to market the place.
Nobody is now manning the office or gate now and both the office and mock up room have been trashed by vandals.
beginning of the end... again
