Even though you do not have the certificate, you can prove that you have done your school training. Most jobs will require only that to get started hopefully in your dentist career.

no.. he meant that in order to receive his certificate that proves he is a dentist, he must work as a dentist in Iraq for 3 years before he moves abroad. It is a way that the country uses to safeguard against educating ppl in a certain profession and getting none of the benefits of that professional if they move away immediately. But he is afraid that if he stays there, he will die before 3 years. He says he would rather sell peanuts in another country than stay there because he wants to live.

think about it this way...the current iraqi govt was faced with an incredibly difficult ethical situation: let all the graduating doctors leave to improve abroad and 'be free' or to keep them in the country to actually solve the doctor deficit problem that iraq currently is facing. Of course, all humans value their lives more than anything, so one can understand why fellows like Saif are pretty pissed off living in a city where the probability of dying on a given day is pretty high.
I think the issue is not his ability to leave, but rather the frustration and disappointment of investing so much into his education, then finding that he can't further that education abroad because the government has chosen to withhold the proof that he ever finished a dentistry degree. Sure, he can still move to wherever he wants, but all those years are now wasted unless he remains in the country for an additional three years.

Why does he want a certificate? Just practice dentistry anyways. I'm sure Iraq isn't exactly overflowing with dedicated dentists like him, so people won't give a crap if he doesn't have a paper to prove he's a good dentist, they just want their teeth to stop hurting.

Leave Iraq and go to Europe or America. You can get into any dentist school with your prior experience and that explanation. The war in Iraq was fucked up to begin with, unfortunately most people in American did not recognize that. I'm sure you will find that the academic community is largely sympathetic to the Iraqi people, I bet you could pass competency exams and get an equivalent certificate in America--as you said you want to get more advanced degrees anyway so what does it matter.
Come to the West and you will do very well for yourself. Your command of English will certainly be to your advantage.

No, the US country isn't the only country there -- wouldn't want to forget the Moldovan contingent -- but over 95% of the combat troops in Iraq are Americans, and, as the British withdraw their troops, that percentage is increasing.
There is no coalition. The troops have done their job -- they've been betrayed by the Bush administration.

No, it's 95% as of late March, 2007. But even that's an understatement, because most foreign troops are confined to their bases for their own safety. Virtually 100% of troops involved in active combat operations are Americans.

Hello from Japan... I saw the film "underexposure" in the Arab Film Festival in 2005, and I really liked it. I saw the film twice actually. This episode reminded me of the film in the way of telling stories through moving images with audio. no.. he meant that in order to receive his certificate that proves he is a dentist, he must work as a dentist in Iraq for 3 years before he moves abroad. It is a way that the country uses to safeguard against educating ppl in a certain profession and getting none of the benefits of that professional if they move away immediately. But he is afraid that if he stays there, he will die before 3 years. He says he would rather sell peanuts in another country than stay there because he wants to live.

think about it this way...the current iraqi govt was faced with an incredibly difficult ethical situation: let all the graduating doctors leave to improve abroad and 'be free' or to keep them in the country to actually solve the doctor deficit problem that iraq currently is facing. Of course, all humans value their lives more than anything, so one can understand why fellows like Saif are pretty pissed off living in a city where the probability of dying on a given day is pretty high.

I think the issue is not his ability to leave, but rather the frustration and disappointment of investing so much into his education, then finding that he can't further that education abroad because the government has chosen to withhold the proof that he ever finished a dentistry degree. Sure, he can still move to wherever he wants, but all those years are now wasted unless he remains in the country for an additional three years.

What scares me is I have no idea whether pulling out will have less death, or staying in longer. I used to feel that pulling out would solve things, but I'm really scared that that will just have the civil war flame up even worse. I can't tell which option will have less deaths!

Why does he want a certificate? Just practice dentistry anyways. I'm sure Iraq isn't exactly overflowing with dedicated dentists like him, so people won't give a crap if he doesn't have a paper to prove he's a good dentist, they just want their teeth to stop hurting.

It's difficult to set priorities in those circumstances. I think he choose to live abroad to stay life and safe. What's the point to be a dentist in Baghdad if that means a professional 'dead' dentist anyway. It wasn't about money.

Leave Iraq and go to Europe or America. You can get into any dentist school with your prior experience and that explanation. The war in Iraq was fucked up to begin with, unfortunately most people in American did not recognize that. I'm sure you will find that the academic community is largely sympathetic to the Iraqi people, I bet you could pass competency exams and get an equivalent certificate in America--as you said you want to get more advanced degrees anyway so what does it matter.

I'm using this video for my philosophy project to portray how this law is unjust. Thanks for posting it and good luck to you. It's cleatly unfair and outrageous to force potnetial doctors and dentisits to serve for 3 years, since with the current situations, there are more possibilities to get killed than to survive. It's ridiculous to say that you should be glad to be a dentist later, IF you survive. People shouldnt be foced to choose their life or their career.

well in other countries like the usa the goverments make young men go to war because they don't give them any other opportunities to make money. In many countries worldwide with not enough poppulation this happens. At least you get to be a dentist later as opposed to the american soldiers that still get to be poor after the war
