I saw this and this guy blew me away. The whole time I was thinking, 'Get this boy an agent already people.' One of the best versions of this song EVER!
honestly i have watched quite a few videos of this number and even the professional and semi-pro performers have failed to impress me as much as this kid, his emotion permeates every word and gesture throughout this song which is what i look for in this song, since this is the finale of act one, the performer has to blow the audience away in order to make them go out to intermission thinking, "wow be our guest was good but that last song blew me away" thats the ultimate goal of this number to me
Why is everyone being so critical of a high school show? Let me say this high schools performance is one of the best I've seen and think the Beast was excellent he had such character and depth as opposed to others who have just said the lines and sang the song this guy felt it!
I don't get why people are saying the beast was horrible. I think he sounded fine for a beast character. I would think it odd if he sang perfectly as a beast. It's just not in character.
I think to that point you have to sort of let that go in a musical. It may be out of character for someone to sing (or sing well!), but that's the nature of a musical, it's out of character for everyone in town to sing! I'd expect a professional beast to be excellent, but for a high school this performance was stellar! Congrats to the beast! Also the set was awesome!
Your point is fair but painfully obvious. Fagin would have been fairly unlikey to be educated to sing (congrats on getting that part by the way, that's some difficult songs), yet I imagine you sang in key using standard breathing technique?
You obviously tailor singing style and accent to the character, but you wouldn't sing out of key. The original poster was suggesting that a Beast SHOULD sing badly to suit the part, which I disagree with.
oh right, yeah he shouldn't exactly sound "pretty" but it should sound like could enjoy listening to it.
yeah of course i did but obviously things like that go without saying. i mean like you said, an actual town wouldn't just burst into song. but i just meant that the beast cant have a powerful, growling speaking voice and then sing like an angel
thanks yeah it is a pretty tricky role. i'd like to try something like this though. something a bit more tragic, i'm sick of comedy lol
so gotta be honest. singing was terrible sick or w/e it was not good. even if u r sck u dont have to shout and have terrible vowels and all the stuff that makes u a good singer. but the acting was some of the best beast acting i have ever seen. im playing this role this may and im actually going to portray a lot of my movement of of ur movements b/c it is very very believeable and jsut very beast
I love this song, and although the technically singing wasnt perfect...you really sold it! I mean it was awesome, it in no way was boring so i think it still ended up being a great closer
Is that really the beast who made that last comment? If it is you are being modest, you had bronchitis that week remember? :D I thought it was great though, from the viewpoint of a simple cheese grater.
Thanks : ) I know the singing could use work.. I had such a hard time not letting my nerves affect my breathing. Especially because I was so riled up from the fight with belle right before.
the only thing is the singing part for the beast.....My church always does 1 musical a year and its a big production with high schoolers and we did Disney's Beauty and the Beast and I played the Beast also it was my 2 show but first lead so my acting is so so lol but i have a video of this song and the reprise if u wouldn't mind checking out just go to my channel and its not hard to find again great job. btw I am a Bass 2...
When we did it for our theater group, we actually turned the ending into a group piece and I had to go onstage holding back my tears. It was pretty funny now that I think about it.
When my friend's brother played the beast everyone loved it because he did it a lot like the guy in the original Disney movie. Everyone loved the cahracters that sounded like the Originals from the movie. Try to mimic the original guy or the Broadway guy's voice. Good Luck!!
It really depends on the role you are looking at but for this show a darker character piece and an upbeat comedic piece are sugested. I used Pretty Woman from Sweeney (unless you can hack the vocals stay away from sondheim) and wounderful from Wicked. Peices like This is the moment from Jekkyl and Hyde, music of the night or all I ask of you from phantom or something like Stars from Les mis are great character pieces and paired with something like Habenzegahurt das doiche band from Producers:)
My advice to you (as a former Beast) is to completely ignore what softtrumpet said. Don't mimic ANYTHING, or do it because it was done in the movie/on the cast recording".
Unless you can play the role in a way that is true to your personal interpretation of the character and the script, the character will never feel real to the audience. Make big, bold choices, don't be cute...be real.
You can try "Stars" But Les Miz. A trick that you can try is you can look for any big ballad sung by Terrance Mann or James Barbour. Alot of their songs are beast like. Be dark, and show a brighter side if you read a side from the library scene. Make sure you capture the depth of the Beast (i.e. his fear to let anyone in and his yearning to find the perfect someone) If you sing this song grasp the need he has for Belle. I sang this for a recital and played Lefou in a regional production.
incredible set! i would not believe this was a high school performance if I wasn't told so. I agree he's a little hard to hear, but good intonation overall; I'm sure it was much better live. I don't know how he was able to sing on that fog though - that stuff makes you cough really bad.
the set is SOOOOOO GOOOOOD!!!!! it looks almost JUST LIKE the origonal set, for brodway! and the singing is very good, too! hey, ross, do you go to this school (you probebly do, but i just want tho know)? :)
for a high school student he has one AMAZING voice!! in whole its a pretty amazing performance and seems very adzanced for high school, like the scenery. love it.
This is totally my brother and he is amazing and is going to be famous someday! I love this song because it is so passionate and gives me chills everytime I watch it.
you were excellent and the set was beautiful

so he's no opera star, but the performance was amazing. all the emotion was there and that's what made it beautiful.

yes, but their voice is supposed to reflect their character
it's called acting, and it applies to their singing voice aswell.
thats why Gaston is supposed to have a strong, deep voice, to show his confidence and impressiveness
the Beast, however, isn't going to sound like a professional singer
i recently played Fagin in Oliver and i knew i couldn't sing the part as if he were some pop star, i had to sing it like fagin

the only problem with the Beast in this song is that he lost some of the words and he was really flat throughout most of the song
