If you're a christian and you're put off by this song because of the phrase "just alright" then you're missing the point. Chances are when you're reading your Bible there's a good chance you're missing the point of what you're reading too.
@TheJubilee3 Agreed! I just wish that 'preachers' like Jerry Falwell, Fred Phelpes, and Pat Robertson would stop making Jesus look bad.I'm just saying.
@blakenelson089 Wow! You & your dad have great taste in music! I just saw Michael McDonald last night with Boz Scaggs. They sounded terrific! Do you like Steely Dan & Gerry Rafferty? My son is 10 and he loves our "old school" music! I'm actually surprised how many songs that he knows the lyrics to.

@shellaroe hunting is necessary. If the a population of animals gets to high disease starts to spread in it. Also I know people that hunt not to kill for fun, but to keep meat on the table.
The Wildlife Society doesn't oppose hunting/killing. That's not alright with me & I don't think it would be with Jesus either. Any form of killing perpetuates killing. Not very loving....
You can see the black and white version of the Doobie Brothers singing it in the early 70's. It was one of their first small hits and Patrick Simmons sang the slowed down solo part.
In 1966 Art Reynolds took the 5 best singers from his choir at the St. Vestal CME church and created the great Art Reynolds Singers and this was one of their first gospel hits.
@bosshog7169 They are saying they believe in Jesus no matter what anybody else says; they are serious just as the original song was and The Byrds version, too. They are not being fanatical about it, they are just saying that's their belief. Written in the 60's "just alright" had a different meaning. It meant they were sincere in their belief.
You can tell by their faces, they are sincere.
Jesus is Just Alright, which I believe everyone that was up there singing their heart out like this song as they realize he is the way but we all fall so short and are often just lukewarm but we know he is the answer.
saw the doobies just last night in melbourne australia first time ive seen them in concert they were fantastic great show did all the classics and more this was the second song and sounded perfect black water is my personal favourite and that went down a treat
@MyLesPaulcopy Mark 8: 29-30...And he saith unto them, "But whom say ye that I am?" And Peter answereth and saith unto him, "Thou art just alright".
And Jesus reached into his garment and brought forth a doob of great size. And when he had lit it, He and Peter toked until yea, it was completely smoked.
Then He saith unto the multitude, "That is what I call just alright". And he charged them that they should tell no man about it.
@MyLesPaulcopy I listened to it I guess 200 times. I've watched bands get smokin' high on whatever there was to pass around and then sing it. I'd bet 99% of the people I've heard sing this don't give a damn about Jesus. It's a good song with a great rhythm, but that's my personal experience.
Maybe your experience is different, but don't be so pompous & holy as to tell me I don't understand, friend: I understand all too well.
JC is very alright with me; but comfortably numb Christians are NOT and "Christ you know it ain't easy; they just may crucify me" as 'saint' Lennon sang and God knows that THEY are in my own family!
"A person's enemies will be the members of his own family."-JC as quoted in Matthew 10:6

Badly miss Cornelius Bumpus who gave a characteristically inspired vocal on this version during the slow part ("Jesus, well, he's my friend") His sax and keyboard work with The Doobies and Steely Dan was fantastic. RIP brother.
What a waste of 10 years when the Doobie Brothers were without Tom Johnston. They wasted an entire decade of great music and touring from 1979-1988, until Johnston came back for their reunion tour and album in 1989. I still can't believe they have not been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Always diggin' the Doobies!!! If they ever come to your town, do yourself a favor and GO SEE THEM! You won't be disappointed! Miss the long hair, but hair doesn't make or break a band! Peace to 'ya!
@toddviv YES! They're on a co-headlining tour right now with Chicago and they have a new album coming out in September. I've seen them live quite a few times and no one has topped them. They are better live then Steely Dan, Michael McDonald, Boz Scaggs, Foreigner, Kansas, Styx, or Chicago. If you get the chance to see them live, don't pass it up!
