  • Watching this with the Secluded Stronghold by Kanjika.

  • Such weird music. Gives me a strange feeling.

  • So is that where that sound #10 in the S2 came from..... I always thought it was TAILS when he got the emeralds.

  • Looks really cool, but at the same time I can see why it was scrapped. The level design lacked polish and pacing

  • @Cyberpunk747 Agreed. It looks pretty damned bad compared to the other stages.

  • Gaaaah, he sees a half loop with tons of rings and jumps up instead of spin dashing... my eyes!!

  • Um... what hppened to ur time bar?

  • @Gradiuslover361 Debug mode.

  • this zone was scraped from the final release for sonic 2 how did you access it?

    this is so fake.

  • @SONIC29210 Well, of COURSE it was scrapped from the ~~final~~ release, silly! That's why he loaded a Sonic 2 ~~prototype beta~~ rom that has the level still intact! =)

  • @SONIC29210 Idiot...

  • This was a hacked game, not the original. The original Sonic 2 wasn't functional like this. Also, worst Act 2 level I've ever seen. The hacker/whatever you wanna call him didn't even try. Marginal difference in level design, no rings or enemies whatsoever...what was the point?

Would've loved to have seen the original game have this level, however.

  • @Putmalk Actually sir, the BETA has full access to the fully functional version of this level, no hack required!

  • So, Hidden Palace Zone DOES exist?.

  • Maybe the palace was just so well hidden Sonic couldn't find it and that's why it's not in the game ;p

  • @Gimodon Hidden Palace does exist on the Sonic 2 cartridge.

  • OMGWTFHAX He broke the master emerald

  • wouldn't it be great if SEGA were to re-release Sonic 2 for Wiiware, X-Box Live and PSN with all these missing levels? that would be so cool.

  • 6:01 good job tails lol

  • Weird ass level, not really sure what they were going for. I like the light-up bridges though! :D

  • maybe the Hidden Palace Zone should be after the mytsic Cave Zone.... just my opinion though

  • Strange. The music for the Hidden Palace Zone was there, but it was inaccessible to me. The only way I could've gotten there was through a mod, and a cracked game that was made years later. A pit, this would've been an excellent stage to an excellent game...

  • @Audi134 Its sound test #10 :D

  • @kyzelf1

I meant the stage was inaccessible. I could've gotten the music. Sorry about the mixup...

  • @Audi134 It IS accessable!!!! You got a Genisis sonic 2 and a game genie? :D

  • SEGA all the way!!

  • @koalajones88 those are the true words of a gamer i honor your words, as i try to prove that in my school!

  • @koalajones88 yeap i agree wit all u said. But the mario games still have that magic i dont why but nintendo always will be the best to me even though i play 360 games way more now a days. But yea i would take sonic 2, super mario world, or any of the classics over alot of the games of today.

  • hey ése this level its from.. sonic 2 and knuckes?? doesnt??

  • shit i wish they left this in the actual retail version of the game.

  • this is an actual level? i nevr knew dat

  • 1:02 - sonic gives in to the power of the ring and becomes invisible.

  • Huh, so Hidden Palace Zone was really just Mystic Cave Zone.

  • Doesn't it just amaze you that games as simplistic as these suffered "time constraints". If you showed this at E3 now and said that it took you months to make this, you'd be crushed by a bunch of flying bricks that Microsoft tried to sell as a legitimate console, I forgot the name, but you can throw it and it spins 360' like an electronic football.

  • As Ashton Kutcher would say... BUUUURN.

And as Axel from KH would say... BUUURN BABY.

  • HA I always wondered. I use to listen to the BGM in Options of sonic 2 all the time as a kid, heard this song and had no clue what it was for. But was this level in the game at all? Were there like extreme conditions for unlocking it? Or did they just take it out and but kept the bgm in the options? interesting stuff either way

  • @myke336 It was removed, but this video is from a hack, in a prototype, the graphics exist, but the level is not done in that prototype. The graphics has been transfered to the final.

  • @myke336

The level was removed but i think some parts of it like the music and maybe some sprites is still there.

There is a beta of sonic 2 over at sonicretro.

In the Sonic 2 beta hidden palace is a playable level, wood zone too :)

  • @myke336 omg! Found this info on sonicretro:

Hidden Palace is playable in Sonic 2 by using the GameGenie code ACLA-ATD4, enter the Level Select code in the sound test screen). Go back to the title, and hold a + start . select Death Egg Zone. Most of the artwork is missing in the final game, and collision data is removed, making the zone impossible without enabling debug mode at the level select screen. It is impossible to complete the level without placing a capsule with debug mode.

  • I always wondered what level this music went to. Glad to finally see it. Thanks for posting!

  • god i wish this wouldve made it in the game

  • I didn't get how to activate this stage... =/

  • I've always loved this song.. and pretty much all the music from the classic Sonic The Hedgehog games!

  • Triforce background!

  • 1:04 Knuckles is going to be pissed

  • @XxMrmoneyKing LOL no wonder knuckles hates sonic untile sonic & knuckles

  • @XxMrmoneyKing and thats where knuckles's story came from in SA 1

  • @XxMrmoneyKing lol master emerald

  • It's funny to see the player blatantly cheat with the debug ring trick.

I hate emulator gamers. It's just so WRONG.

  • @Mcheetah You realise the level has incomplete parts. Debug's pretty much necessary.

  • @Mcheetah Debug Mode was in the original Genesis version, actually. It's retained in every version since, but it's not something that's added in emulators - it was always there.

  • @Mcheetah It's funny to see a commentor think this level can be done in regular mode, and anything else is "blatantly cheating".

Also, how is emulating games "so WRONG"? Maybe some of us would rather take the game with us anywhere instead of being limited to being in front of a TV. Is there some issue with that? Wait, does that mean PC games are also "so WRONG"?

  • It's a shame an entire level was built and not used.

  • @andrewlawrence2209 well it looks shitty.

  • @andrewlawrence2209 not fully this is a hack that completes it

  • wow, i finally get the see the level this music goes to. pretty cool for a long time sonic fan

  • love it sonic rulez

  • I know the music to this is featured in the sound test, well at least it is in my copy of the game and yes i still have my Megadrive (Genesis in America) and it's in peak condition still.

  • Be nice if Sega trolled players with this stage on Sonic Generations.

  • 1:05 thus the reason knuckles was so pissed at you in sonic 3 and knuckles

  • If anyone wants to know why HPZ was removed from Sonic 2, the anwser is pretty simple. Its the same reason why Tails can't fly in the game. SEGA only had six months to make the game, it had to be finished by September. It of course shipped November 24,1992, 3 years after SMB 3.

  • shallow nintendo made SEGA cut out hidden palace, dust hill zone, and even THE DEATH EGG LEVELS!

  • @IainStudios What?! How?! When?

  • @TheBetaFox Oh, nevermind. I thought that they cut it out in the DS version, but these are in extended version

  • @IainStudios Nintendo didn't make SEGA cut anything. These levels weren't in the final Sonic 2 to begin with. Any attempts to integrate it with so were fan-made. The only glimpse we have of Hidden Palace and Wood Zone is from the Sonic 2 Beta. We didn't see the true form of the rest; except of the Dust Hill Zone, which was shown by its designer (atleast how it was ment to be, and people ripped the graphics and used them in fanmade DHZs).

  • 1.02 is that a glitch?

  • Hidden Palace Zone is, was, and ever shall be the alpha and omega of amazing cut zones that didn't deserve to be cut.

  • What version is this? When I use the game genie code to get here, it's all graphically screwed up.

  • @glitchmethod The game he's playing is a hack.

  • @nickson1001

    and I was being sarcastic.

  • sonic: ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Tails: sonic its blocking us can u smash it sonic:YES!!!!! Knux:walking out of bathroom *sees* u mother ***** sonic3 sonic:hahahahah fun island knux get ready BOOM sonic: oh no a egg bot knux:............ u destroyed master emerald *rns* sonic:m....holy!!!!! GAME OVER XD
  • Sonic games had the best music

  • Pause directly on 1:02 why the hell is sonic a ring?!

  • @ShazbotDX debug code

  • same boss as mystic cave zone

  • HAX!!!

  • How do you get to this zone on sonic 2?

  • @blaku69 It's not normally available, you have to use a Game Genie to access it. But the music's in the sound test all the same.

  • How intriguing, and mysterious...wonderful music to a level that was so "Hidden", it actually "Never Was" at all...I'm sure I would have loved it. Every Gamer 25 or older has been there through some absolutely amazing times in Gaming history and I'm proud to say that Sonic will always mean a great deal to me, and my past. Sometimes memories can be so rousing, the nostalgia actually hurts. But it can be a nice, melancholy peaceful type of sorrow. Long live the 90's Gamer!

  • @CellarDoor06 Wait, what about the 80's gamer?

  • @CellarDoor06 Best I've ever heard it put.

  • @CellarDoor06 i agree i am 25 and ive been through some of those amazing experiences. Its sad gaming does not have the same effect on me anymore. The nostalgia is overwheming when i go back to the ealry 90s days of video games

  • @CellarDoor06 I cannot agree with you more. This takes me back to some fond memories of my past,to the point of trying not to choke up. I remember being 9 years old, running through the sound test section, coming across this music and wondering where the hell I could find it in the game. Little did I know it would be years later before I found out. It's a moment of years past that I can never get back, but at least these games will still be around for years to come in some way or another.

  • @CellarDoor06 Listen to the credits

  • sonic:ooh shiney thing MUST SPIN JUMP

    *BREAK NOISE*

knuckles:BITCH ILL GET YOU ONE DAY

    *sonic 3*

    *BLAM*

    sonic:OW WHAT WAS THAT FOR

    knuckles:THE SONIC 2 BETA *run*

sonic:he just broke the forth wall and needs a atude ejustment

  • 0:43 was placed in a magazine article before the game was released as a trailer. That's the reason why Hidden Palace got leaked since no one could find it.

  • And another thing: I think Sonic is the perfect example of exploring. Because SEGA placed the secrets in places, where you...

    a)...don't expect them

b)...need skill to get to it

c)...have to use the game mechanics (like a platform blocks a secret. You use the platform, later disappears and way to secret is free like in Chemical Plant or Oil Ocean Zone).

And the best is: These secrets aren't even invisible (Yes, I'm lookin' at you, Mario!). And like Mario, it's still a very good Jump'n'Run.

  • It's funny that the best rated comments are practically the same.

  • isnt this music really used in the game?

  • @kemiboy11 go to sound test and click 10 and youll here this song. its unused in-game

  • How were you able to play this?

  • @violet46 You have to download the prototype version of Sonic 2 to be able to play this zone. You can also access the zone on the final version of Sonic 2 with the help of Game Genie, however the zone itself is all garbled and messed up.

  • what a pretty looking level. i wonder why sega removed it from sonic 2? whatever the reason, it's sad it was removed. :[ i love the two top comments, by the way XD

  • @katygirl104 They ran out of time. :( This along with many other zone didn't make it into the final version, but Hidden Palace was the most complete out of all of the scrapped zones.

  • this level is beautiful..... damn..... there are some lost levels in "Streets of Rage 3"... but they are only in the japanese version "Bare Knuckles 3".... you can go by motor-cycle and chase a truck where a guy pushes barrels to you.... after finishing the map, the truck has an accident..... really cool

  • 1:31 Hidden palace zone contains over 9000 triforces!

  • Comment removed

  • Why didn't a full version of this make it into the final game??!?!?!?!? This is awesome!

  • @Smurfman256 it was because of time... They told everyone that they would finish it by a certain time and there were some things that were not finished in it. So they scrapped the level. Somehow several of the level's files were still in the game. :D

  • hmm in gane pro and elctronicks gaming monthly they showed in 190990s that hadphotos and info ext on hidden palice that it says its well hidded then next issue and other books it says its well hiddn then next issus it says its well hidden to make it hard for stage slect people to find it

  • boooooo debug mode ._.

  • this level.. is beautiful...

  • @ShadowXRouge true

  • Pretty sure this is a ROM hack, but I don't know which one. Are you using the debug mode to warp around the level like that?

  • @Anomaly188 if anything go watch pop fiction at gametrailers the vid they uploaded tells you which one

  • I spent such a long time wondering what the Hidden Palace was. Man I like living in the future.

  • what!???????????/ 0.0 yayaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! :DDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • You suck at this game

  • Jordem are you going to reveal your secret on how you got in these stages b/c I'm been trying to get in Hidden Palace for the longest!

The soundtrack and the zone is so beautiful!

  • @pimps1986 It's a hack of Sonic 2, called Sonic 2 Delta. Or was it Sonic 2 Long Version? It's one of those. Anyway, they both added in levels that were scrapped in the early stages of production, like the Hidden Palace Zone shown here. Check out their pages on SonicRetro(dot)com for more info.

  • @pimps1986 true

  • This reminds me of another level in the game. :)

  • @mskiara18 mystic cave zone rite?

  • @bossb510 Yeah a little bit.

  • @mskiara18 this is still awesome tho lol

  • this was such a good level! shame it had to be scrapped. now it really lives up to its name. funny the music can still be played!

  • Wish you could have actually PLAYED the level instead of going into debug mode.

  • @butterfinger345 Its impossible to Complete or even Play without debug mode as the level itself is bugged out and has an impossible/looping layout

  • Shame they rushed the game, so many levels were left out, but they kept all the music for them, by putting them in the 2 player mode. This stage pops up up again in Sonic and Knuckles, I personally like this design and music better, shame it was never finished...

  • @pilotboy500

    its a gamer joke....

  • what master emerald you idiots?

  • Gametrailers sent me here

  • @KHfanguy lol good one man.

  • At 1:02 i tottally saw that debug.

  • Was that really the master emerald? AND WHERE THE HECK IS KNUCKLES?!

  • @UmbraBlaze People that were involved in the making of Sonic 2 (Sorry, I don't exacly remember who) said on a website that it actually was a random rock

  • IM TELLING NUKKELS sorry for spelling

  • how the heck do u get there

  • @skatingdrummingnerd3 This is a stage that was suppose to be in the game but it was too complicated

  • man the theme sounds like the legend of zelda music doesnt it?

  • Sega should use this Zone on Sonic 4 Episode II. They used an unused theme for Eggman on Episode I, why dont use a unused level and unused badniks to episode 2? But instead of call this zone Hidden Palace change the name.

  • Is this in Sonic 2 for Sega Genesis?? How do I not remember this level?

  • @gnarlycharlie666 it wasn't in the finished product, tho the theme was

  • @autopreneur Oh ok thanks. Did this turn into the Mystic Cave Zone?

  • @gnarlycharlie666 the boss did

  • and on ds there is a hidden palace?if yes how we make to go in hidden palace ?

  • sonic 2??,de que consola es??,megadrive??,cnt please.

  • I suppose this isn't in the iPod version?

  • oh.... so mystic cave replaced this level with that boss...... i never knew.........

  • wtf at 2:55!!

  • Maybe the palace was so well hidden Sonic couldn't find it :)

  • is this the original game or the mega collection? if so how do u unlock it

  • ZOMG SONIC u DESTROYED THE MASTER EMERALD

  • I find this music scary for some reason.

  • Is that triforces in the background?

  • how can you going to this level ??!

  • nevermind

  • howd u get here?

  • o, the old drowning music, i love it!!

  • if this level did make it into the final game....where would they have fit it? the game is already built so well

  • @NightbladeNotty They were going to include knuckles and develop a bigger story but they saved it for sonic 3, Which i thought was a waste as this zone is so amazing and the music is really good,

    Shame...

  • @Turtlebluff So true, this looks like it could have been much better than the Hdden Palace of S&K. The music is simply amazing.

  • @Turtlebluff

the fact they split Sonic 3 into two games was a shockingly bad decision (early example of DLC shafting, perhaps? Sega were ahead of their time in more ways than one..some good some bad.)

  • @DragonNexus Actually, time had run out for development on Sonic 3, which led to S&K. When You play Sonic 3 & Knuckles, that is how they intended Sonic 3 to be. It is more like bad planning and poor time management, which led to a bad decision.

  • @DragonNexus :P this is turtlebluff, So yeah it seems like a good way of putting in dlc, But if it was a form of dlc then it must've been a big one as it was pretty much a whole 50% of the story, not an addition

How hard do you think it is to make a mod for something like sonic 3?

I always wanted to make my own version of sonic 4 using the sonic 3 engine :)

  • @NightbladeNotty probably in between Mystic Cave and Oil Ocean

  • @NightbladeNotty I know this is a super old comment, but in an interview with Yuji Naka (the creator of Sonic) it was revealed that "Hidden Palace Zone was originally intended to be a level where the player would be warped to after collecting the 7 Chaos Emeralds. Once there, they would receive the power to morph into Super Sonic. The idea was ultimately killed and the ability was given to the player immediately".

I hope that enlightens you a bit.

  • @gaminggoddess85 really

  • 1:06 this is why knuckles punches sonic in the face when you first start sonic 3.

  • @shadowfang64 He was so angry that his fist gained enough rage to turn Super Sonic back to Sonic.

  • @shadowfang64 lol just got a great idea for the sonic 2 HD project, what if you get all the chaos emeralds before hidden palace zone and then you get to the master emerald and instead of breaking it you push it aside to get to a last special stage in order to become hyper sonic ^.^

  • Why didn't this make its way into the final game? It looks so good

  • it's simply just a hacked level. it was priginally supposed to be in sonic 2, but like genocide city, it was never finished. some people will just try to make levels and name them after unfinished ones.

  • "some people will just try to make levels and name them after unfinished ones."

    ?

Hidden Palace, unlike Genocide/Cyber City Zone, made it a great distance into production, 2 prototypes leaked online have the graphics, etc, the music and graphics are real, just edited into the game. :D

  • I Always tried to figure out what level was this song on. how do you get this Level?

  • that isnt the master emerald. uts just a scenario prop. one dude from sega confirmed it

  • You only get this stage in debug version?

  • yeah!

  • sonic broke the master emerald!knuckles is NEVER gonna forgive him(or he will search AGAIN for the parts)

  • @smashyoshi1 You are wrong. Knuckles would be happy since he simply dont want egg man to take control of the emerald. Since its suppose to be indestructible, he got to search for them all and protect them against egg man's robots. He hated sonic because he never knew what he intended to do with the emeralds in the 1st place.

  • How is this guy playing on this level. You cant play on this level in STH2.

  • 1:02 cheater!!!

  • @RealBigDeal22 Wow when I saw it I laughed my ass off!

  • 1:06 OH shit you shatter the master emerald. Knuckles is gonna be pissed!

  • @manfandan

    lol.

  • @manfandan not is master emerald!

    more is funny!

  • @manfandan same thing at 2:40

  • Wow, did you really have to hack? This couldn't have been done on your own? :/

  • @Rainclaw11 alright then, if you think hacking is so wrong, then why don't you tell us how to do it otherwise?

  • This is hacked to finish it. The real beta hidden palace zone in Sonic 2 was unbeatable, because those emeralds were unbreakable. This is Beta+Hack=This level. What an interesting level though. Too bad they didn't leave it in.
