@dmackey828 or, you know, you could play project x on the amiga.
what's the point of this? sure you could attach a pentium and a vga card to a c64 and make a doom clone, but that's just stupid. it's doesn't have anything to do with the original machine anymore.
It looks good but I have a feeling that CPU was used just for some samples playback. Graphically it's nothing more than a standard Turrican engine. So, again, to improve games we need video chip upgrade - in case of C-64 - definitale more colours - add vivid CGA compatible colours - these are missing badly on C-64. Add more HW sprites, better HW scrolling - we all know games cut the screen area to perform scrolling. This applies to any 8-bit upgrades.
That's what I was thinking, my guess is that they used a lot of SID interrupts with the 6502 to do the music which would have left us a trashy game if the unit had been stock. I'm not sure if the SuperCPU has a RAM expansion for it but it sure looks like it does.
While backgrounds looks really great, sprites lacks the usual "depth" of life... SID was already capable of such great sound - the surprise here is the VIC doing some wondefrul things ;)
The introduction bit which has two demon looking facers is actually the last boss from a negeo horizontal shmup called pulstar(R-Type clone) if any one is interested LOL
i would love to play this game especially being a big fan of R-TYPE/katakis/crush/boom & any horizontal shmup that kicks ass...yep this game looks awesome & great upload...
The official page notes that the in-game soundsystem provides 2-channel piecewise digitized music and sound effects.
I suspect one could mutilate the SID into a DAC with something between 8 and 10 bits of resolution by using PWM and volume controls on multiple channels, 20MHz CPU and a few MB of RAM certainly help!
The intro music is traditionally SID-synthesized though.
Itd be completely broken on a plain 6502. It uses opcodes that arent there, and itd probably break the SID or something with all that digital music flying at it.
IO is even more of a memory test than Rick Dangerous. X-Out, Catalypse, and Enforcer are all better, in both graphics and gameplay. Enforcer looks especially good.
What does the OP think of the gameplay? It does look very, very impressive for a c64, but is the game fun? From what I have seen in this demo, there is a lot of memorization you must do to play this game. Remembering exactly when things will appear out of nowhere for example.
So, how is the gameplay? Is it fun to play?
Is it a great tech accomplishment considering the 20mhz 65816 cpu?
The game is fun, but you are right. There is a lot of memorization of board patterns to navigate and boss movements. The game is a tremendous technical accomplishment, a stock C64 would not come close in horsepower.
While technically impressive, this game looks as much fun as sticking cactii up your ass while sucking on a huge horsecock covered in vomit (inspired by AVGN).
Sorry but this ia quite a prime example of a coder gamer ... looking and sounding very good, while being technically advanced, but quite butchered gameplay.
I wonder how many people (except the team) playtested this before release.
Sucking a huge horsecock would be sexy man, but not with your vomit on it ;)
game looks impressive. music's not as bad as people say here it is. But it looks faaaar to difficult. Pattern memorization to play the 1st level creates a vast ammount of frustration. but as a tech demo, just coooool!
Probably not as it's relatively unknown, considering most people who still have C64's do not own the super CPU version. This game is very deserving of a release on the VC though, as more people would be able to play it that weren't able to before. I would love to play it myself, c'mon Nintendo sort it out :oD
I would buy the game just for the music.

Gameplay looks extremely boring. I always hated games where you were just constantly shooting things coming your way.

Theres no slow down at all thats excellent and reminds me of those wonderful PCEngine shoot em ups.

So the SuperCPU is 20 megahertz 16-bit CPU
.
A C64 with this is basically equivalent to the Apple IIgs, albeit a little faster.

I can't see the SuperCPU improving the game above and beyond existing classics like R-Type, Delta etc..

Do you think an overclocked WinVice could play this game?? :)

No; WinVICE doesn't emulate the SuperCPU, and it never will.

I cannot believe this is a SID chip.
It doesn't even sound like SID style.
harleykman 2 years ago
It is a SID, no doubt about it. This game was run on a flat NTSC Commodore 128 with 6581 SID.

Thats not a SID tune.
Its some digital music getting pumped out of the SID utilizing the SCPU's power to take care of it....
for what its worth the background music doesnt really fit the game. lol
Arkhandroid 2 years ago
@harleykman Because the music is digitized and played on SID.
Atad64 1 year ago
@harleykman It is probably using some sound samples as well.
Commodorian 1 year ago
@harleykman Many of the sounds are clearly audio samples which do not utilize the basic sid waveforms. I guess thats why id sounds so unfamilar.

Questions:
- Is this the multicolor 160x200 mode?
- If it could run on a 6502, how would it perform? Slower? Or completely broke?
harleykman 2 years ago
Hi! I believe it mostly in 160x200 mode. It will not run on a 6502, it was specifically written for the SuperCPU.

I had a SuperCPU "Rocket" version 16MB RAM, and 6 voice stereo SID for my C64C, I in '97, and now I'm still kicking myself for selling everything. :(

Looks impressive and I still want to play it on my Commie since I've heard about the project. But the SuperCpu + other devices costs so so so much.
