@GrowlanserDragoon It isn't modded, or using cheats. The reason why he can survive touching the enemies, is because of the game's hit detection. The hitboxes are a lot smaller than the enemies' sprites. Meaning he can touch enemies while the hitboxes are not in conflict with eachother.

@XxdinojmanxX He did a wall jump. The pipe, as well as all other walls, are made of 16*16 pixel blocks. If you land just between two such block, with enough speed, Mario will get stuck in the wall for one frame. During that frame you are able to make a jump.

@pooponparade Not really. After doing those series of jumps, Mario is no longer in the middle of the screen, which he is supposed to always be. So Mario's placement within the level is messed up, meaning you can go through that pipe and end up in the same place as where the vine leads you. It's used by speedrunners because going through a pipe is faster than climbing up a vine.

@20nathan20100 It's a glitch you can do. By delaying the camera a little, you are able to go through the pipe and end up where the beanstalk would have taken you.

This is because the game can only handle one such "entrance" at the time. So the beanstalk "entrance" is still there when going through the pipe, which means the pipe takes you to that place.

Alright, maybe some of the plants have glitches which make it possible to hit just the very top of the plant and survive, but i.e. the Hammerbro part is just cheating. There is no way that there is a glitch that allows you to 1. bump into an enemy and 2. take a hammer to the face.

I'm not implying that I'm not impressed with his/her skills.

@ChiefKamek When Mario is in his "falling animation" he will land on an enemy no matter where the enemy is hitting him, that's how the game is made. So that's why he was able to kill the hammer brother at 4:04.

Not sure which hammer you mean however. In most games, the hitboxes are smaller than the actual sprites. So a part of the hammer may be inside Mario without Mario getting hit.

This guy is legit, even if you may not believe it.

One thing. The game starts 10 seconds into this video and after 5:11 mario gets the axe to cut the bridge under bowser. I guess that's the point where the game ends, and in that case the game time is 5:01

@andrewg1990 Yup. So I learned after doing some more research. More effective and quite legit. Still amazed that I haven't seen it before as I've played the game since it was released and done fairly quick speedruns myself. Gotta dig my NES out of the closet and do some testing on this technique now. :) I suspect though that this might be the fastest time possible as you pretty much do all the levels in the quickest manner. At least to my knowledge.
