Might I suggest using a software, such as Audacity, to lower the pitch 2 frets on that song? It gives it a sort of night time feel. Pretty epic, if I may say so.
people call it shred cause its fast, i guess its how you interperate it, i just class that fast fuck-fast tapping + a lil sweep. shredding for me is usually ALOT of alternate picking
@Satch7699 obviously I do. A real guitar player knows the difference in shredding and sweeping arpeggios. You can do legato arpeggios all day long without picking a note, but thats not shredding. Slash is shred. Paul Gilbert is shred. This is not shred.

all im gonna say is i love paul gilbert for what he does guthrie for what he does john petrucci for what he does buckethead marty friedman shawn lane for what they do and not what they dont or cantbut what makes them diferent to other muscicians
What it comes down to is improv vs writing. Now Writing is entirely subjective, so this is just my opinion. But, I believe Petrucci can write better set pieces of music. I.E some of the solos/musical sections throughout his career in DT & LT are absolutely superb. Where as, from an improvisational point of view, Guthrie at the moment is on top of his game. Don't get me wrong, his writing is also brilliant. But it is built from an improv perspective. If he changes things live people will like it.
@dan2212089 Where as John doesn't have that option while performing. The chords and general structure of each idea of music don't allow him to. Plus if he did, people would in my opinion dislike it. For the most part anyway. People pay to see John nail the beautiful unison in blind faith. Where as people will pay Guthrie, to hear his awe inspiring improvisational choices during The wonderful slippery thing. They are very different musicians, but work so damn well in their own musical world.

Guthrie is uniqe =) Crazy control on the fretboard. After i discoverd Guthrie, i think it's boring to hear Satriani, Yngwie, Vai, Petrucci, etc etc etc cause it's predictable, even if Yngwie was my guitarhero before.. i'm sorry to say that..guitarists like guthrie Govan got higher level and skills, unpredictable with variations.

What it comes down to is improv vs writing. Now Writing is entirely subjective, so this is just my opinion. But, I believe Petrucci can write better set pieces of music. I.E some of the solos/musical sections throughout his career in DT & LT are absolutely superb. Where as, from an improvisational point of view, Guthrie at the moment is on top of his game. Don't get me wrong, his writing is also brilliant. But it is built from an improv perspective. If he changes things live people will like it.

@dan2212089 Where as John doesn't have that option while performing. The chords and general structure of each idea of music don't allow him to. Plus if he did, people would in my opinion dislike it. For the most part anyway. People pay to see John nail the beautiful unison in blind faith. Where as people will pay Guthrie, to hear his awe inspiring improvisational choices during The wonderful slippery thing. They are very different musicians, but work so damn well in their own musical world.

@dan2212089 Have you listened to Govan's work? I swear "Eric" Is a master piece, Govan isn't just a great improviser but he's a great song writer. Check out his stuff with Asia and GPS. I'm not a fan of JP at all, but I do respect him. This is going to make me look like a troll. I'll say it anyway and I don't mean to offend any one,but some JP fanboys are so closed minded they literally compare him to people that are on a whole different level. Hopefully Govan Fanboys won't do this as well.

Petrucci is a good musician, but his style of playing has never appealed to me, so I usually place him into the category of people who play guitar like an Olympic sport. Personally, I think that true intelligent music is that such as Aphex Twin. I only responded to remind an idiot that there are different types of music other than 'shredding'.

@deadithink True I also do not like Petrucci's style either, but that doesn't underclass him as non-versatile He has his own style. And i'm sorry to break it to you but being a virtuoso means you have mastered your instrument, as in being able to "shred" or play sweet melodic riffs or accompanied rhythm. But yeah I agree, too many shred-lovers out there. But I believe shredding has it's place. but The only "intelligent" music I know of is classical.. (lol)
