1. For iron throat do you train by training the muscles in your neck or by having someone punch you there?
2. For iron groin its not a muscle or bone your can train. So you train by letting someone kick you in the nuts? Is it just about having dead nerves or are they really iron-like-tough?
The training is not like the demonstration at all. The goal is to protect the body, not damage it. Through gradual, safe, & gentle training, involving breath, posture, stretching, visualization, and "qi manipulation," one develops the ability to perform these "stupid master tricks" without injury. The skill is real (although it can be faked). Ski jumpers do not start with olympic jumps & weight lifters do not start with olympic weights.
A hard stick would not break, and would only push the other person backward. That's too easily faked.
Re # 2: The spear holder is careful to brace the spear against his belly with both hands together at the base. This way, the only thing that bends the spear is the pressure directly into the skin and trachea. If held horizontally, the pressure would be quickly directed downward toward the clavicle.
As for question 3, you might as well ask, "Why not deflect bullets with your eyeball?"
ya, its a good trick. the tip doesn't even push into the skin...its the side of the spear pressing on the top of the collar bone, and the guy holding it uses his forward hand to push downwards. The side ways torsion causes the spear to bend...not any great martial ability. Another common martial arts fraud that doesn't show any real ability. Pffft
You are wrong, my presumptuous friend. While the trick you mention is often seen in some demonstrations, it is not used in this one. There is, in fact, no "forward hand" here. The person holding the spear is careful to brace the spear against his belly with both hands together at the base. This way, the only thing that bends the spear is the pressure directly into the skin and trachea. It was done this way specifically to avoid the appearance of the trick you mention.
These abilities are real. I've been the one holding the spear.
Vuduegg, your intentional ignorance pains me. If you could refrain from commenting on things you only know from your Xbox games, it would be greatly appreciated.
Very impressive conditioning, as someone else pointed out. I've seen in some books the same energy referred to in western terms as "nervous force," "nervous energy," "personal magnetism," or "bioelectical energy," also tied in with the human emf or electro-magnetic-field and it's currents running through and around the body. It's as if there is still a question whether acupuncture is for real or not, when it's used as anesthetic for surgery! Keep up the great work.
Just because you think that some people use tricks, does not mean that everyone does.
Too many so-called skeptics pretend to be scientists by simply saying "I have seen fakes, therefore this is not real." In doing so you mock real science. It also shows a narrow perspective on what you call "proper martial arts training."
Demonstrations can be sensational. But the training that goes into them is real. 6 - 12 months of daily practice to do something like this, many years to do others.
"Iron Shirt", "iron palm", Iron "whatever" is complete bullshit. It's PHYSICS people! Snap out of it!! Embrace reality, it's your friend! Stop being SILLY. You should read "behind the incredibles" by Leung Ting, a GungFu grandmaster, where he explains ALL these tricks in detail. Read "Shaolin grandmaster text" by Shaolin Ch'An. They say this is an embarrassment to all legit martial arts.
Of course it can be explained by good science. Who has claimed otherwise? Months of training and conditioning under a qualified teacher can strengthen the mind and body, including muscles, tendons, connective tissue, internal organs...
Also, please watch your manners if you wish to be heard. Comments containing offensive language, or insulting tones will be deleted.
If you are accusing us of trickery because you once read a book, I suggest you research a little more carefully. The person holding the spear is not pushing down, so the pressure goes directly into the trachea, at least until the spear is bent to nearly 90 degrees.

There are several ways to train iron shirt. The students in this demo (by the SYL Wushu Institute in Vancouver) had trained in Daperng Qigong (an esoteric system taught to our Sigong by an Emei Buddhist Monk.) They had also taken the "Intensive Iron Shirt" program. The class is one year and requires daily practice. After three months, most students can demonstrate some real skill. See watch?v=1n-5ljDc9pk for a really cool demo by one of my shirfu's friends.
The training involves breath and visualisation practice, as well as core muscle and fascia training, subtle control of muscles, tendons, organs, and the mind. I also conditions the skin and fascia to withstand, redirect and endure strong force in week areas: headtop, temple, armpit, throat, neck, chest, back, solar plexus, groin, kidney, ribs, thighs, shins, etc.
Actually the bed of nails is a different matter all together. If the nails are few and far apart it can, in fact, be a demonstration of real skill. However, the nails are usually so close together that the risk of injury is practically eliminated even if the nails are sharp.

1. why use a spear that bends? Get a real hard stick.
2. why not hold it horizontally at the throat, not down at the belly which gives it levarage.
3. real talent would be for the spear to be thrown at his throat, see if he can survive that...
