it does sound very pixies which where late 80s, but actually sounded what would come about in the 90s. it does have a ramones vibe too if you want, which is 80s too, but neither of those sound like other 80s things at the time. if you take out the sound ambiance it sounds very much like a 90s poppy rock song =]
I am a tad hesitant on this band. I can say I enjoy the music-I've only had a couple of chances to listen to Psychocandy. So I like JAMC. But there's things that bug me about them, that prevents me from loving them. They just seem so bored. Lacking any emotion(as evident by their demeanor). Maybe its the formula I'm bothered by? The way the half-heartedly "sing" the songs, as if it's a chore. But maybe I'll think differently after more listens. Remember I like them. Just not love em. yet.
When psychocandy came out, the album cover had pictures of their videos and live performances, and i thought, "crap! man, i wish i could see these videos!" Now that I can, I'm like "wow, that's all that was? really?" still I love the noisy feedback music, even if the band looks like they could give two shits.
I totally agree! at least they are still around though. hey if you like this you should check out the new magnetic fields album called distortion and The Raveonettes album Lust Lust Lust.

Well IMHO Dinosaur Jr. managed to do it pretty well too, and they didn't even copy each other (they formed at the same time, on different continents, and both released their debuts in 1985). But yeah, J&MC are pr'y much unbeatable.
psychocandy was their best ever album 2 date...as 4 the sound tho',,,checkout a band called Love and Rockets esp their earlier recordings...i would hazard a guess here and say with the likes of Velvet Underground,Stooges,Sex Pistols the Love and Rockets too, were probably an influence!
let's not forget the early cramps. you can "draw a line" from the cramps straight thru the jmc to my bloody valentine. if you go for that rock-crit kind of stuff that is. at the time in 85, it was obvious how much they sounded like "psychedelic jungle" cramps, but no-one hardly remembers them anymore, and of course the records sound like crap on cd (like most rock lps-- ramones, jmc, etc, etc) so the aural similarities are even harder to trace for the kids nowadays-- but it's there.
this is very, very true. there's definitely elements of the cramps in this, and even more so with early my bloody valentine stuff. "this is my bloody valentine" sounds pretty much exactly like the cramps mixed with a bit of the birthday party.
Lovely comment. Please consider feelings etc. when you respond. Have seen band numerous times since 1984. I stay around the corner from them. jaye230, The guy is a wanker!
I've seen The Jesus and Mary Chain this saturday at Rock en Seine festival. When the night fell down, the Jarvis Cocker's fans were gone, then the Jesus and Mary Chain arrived and smashed all our best expectations with such a great concert. No "hello", nor either stupid jokes like the other artists. They came just to set clear what rock n' roll means. Fuck everyone else.
this video is very psychedelic and recall the atmosphere of the cult movie Easy rider by Dennis Hopper. Psychocandy is a very important record, like the first Velvet underground or the first Stooges. They were better than anybody else in 1985 in the fucking music industry with their brillant record! I love you Jesus and Mary chain!
