  • guitar?

  • @Hellwarrior1000 Bernie Rico Jekyll

  • 3:48 what's the fourth note?

  • so modest like legit

  • Yeah, he's damm right about Guthrie Govan.

  • I really don't get it, love Periphery, but can't stand Meshuggah. Ah well. Good to see some SikTh lovin!

  • @thejoker1393

You're not the only one. Meshuggah is just boring.

  • @thejoker1393 Meshuggah is like whiskey, it's acquired taste, i totally understand if you don't like it.

  • This guy... not influenced by Tool... damn :(... meshuggah and tool are friends

  • Bulb has a lot of Exotic guitars!!

  • A freak of nature. lol

  • allan holdsworth, guthrie govan,meshuggah,sikth...this guy is my new hero

  • Thanks Misha for the Allan Holdsworth hookup! And you're so right about the metal fans with jazz musicians. It all is well thought out music, it all is worthy to listen to.

  • 2:23 speaking glith

  • @DamageIncM James Hetfield is a piss in the ocean compared to these guys you fucking kid

  • @goatencopyrighted

    What "guys"? You fucken' baby...

  • @DamageIncM the Periphery guys perhaps mr retard?

  • @DamageIncM James Hetfield plays in standard E. He tried making a metalcore/djent album. It was called St. Anger. So, actually he can't djent with a single string. Kirk couldn't even play one of the most basic riffs of Some Kind Of Monster and got pissed off. It's on YouTube.

  • @carlresmondo

Ahm, so what if he plays in E?... Tuning doesn't matter.

Do you think these "djent"-guys are NOT inspired by guitarists like James Hetfield? Think again.

I was just kidding because of James' heavy picking style by the way, don't take things so seriously.

And that moment with Kirk, you're putting it under a microscope, because EVERYONE has moments like that.

And keep in mind this was after they hadn't played for a long time.

They missed out on a LOT of practice.

  • @DamageIncM You're right about tuning not matter, but with this subgenre of metal, the string gauge and tuning play heavily into the tone that is created and is the foundation of "Djent". Therefore, in this specific subgenre, tuning does matter. Also, it would be different if Kirk was attempting to play something really techincal, but it was just power chords played on the third and fifth fret. I was playing stuff like that when I was 13 effortlessly. It was dumb. Its whatever.

  • @carlresmondo

It was not that he couldn't play the power-chords, it was that he couldn't play the unusual rhythm that James had made up.

It was also not as simple as it turned out to be on the album you know, not as straightforward.

The problem Kirk had was with the rhythm and the timing of the notes.

I can totally understand what went wrong there, and it's probably (or clearly) not Kirk's style at all.

They never played a riff like that before. Not like Kirk couldn't do it...

  • djent explained.

  • he says like really a lot, like over 150 times.

  • Damn... Studying Meshuggah is like studying the Vedas.

  • this man. i agree with everything he says. ESPECIALLY about dream theater aha. he is a wizard

  • 10 years ahead of their time? What meshuggah did 10 years ago is 10 years ahead of THIS time...

  • Those bareknuckles are so hot.

  • 3:55 DJENT DJENT DJENT!

  • fuck yeah for the Guthrie Govan reference!

  • I was about to say Sikth. You can completely hear the influence in Misha's writing. Genius band.

  • love sikth! shame they split up

  • At 4:19 I could swear he was about to play Sunrise.

  • Sikth were one of the best fucking bands around.

  • @sheshehang1 HELL YEAH!!!

  • 2 :30 ish - he mentioned MESHUGGAH are years ahead of their time ~ thumbs up if you agree !

  • @druggedontemptation He talks about Meshuggah for ~40-50 seconds before that. People should know if they watch the video..

  • @druggedontemptation freakin genius of a band.

  • This whole time when he was talking about Govan and Holdsworth I was just hoping he would mention Shawn Lane.

  • love what misha has to say about holdsworth. everybody always focuses on the legato thing, but where allan really sets himself apart is the alien way he goes about composing. the melodies, the chord progressions, the harmonies - nobody else writes shit like that, so beautiful and strange.

  • Never thought he would know about sikth !! Bland streeett blooommmmm

  • You know what, my boy be talking about Alan Holdsworth a lot... I'ma listen =D

  • I love ur old work bulb, and respect ur playing more than u know. But no joke, u need to put a lid on it. I mean, damn, why are u even holding a guitar in this clip?

  • he mentions guthrie govan and allen holdsworth. Thats cool in my book.

  • Misha doesn't need to prove anything, he's not a teacher, he's a producer and a guitar player. His success speaks for itself. I've seen Periphery twice and they continue to improve. Take your bullshit tight ass complaints somewhere else.

  • @QuantizeMusic LISTEN TO THIS GUY!

  • Comment removed

  • why would you hate on bulb? he's modest and admits it when he doesn't know something. "he is rambling" complain, complain. people like this sound like such whiny little whores.

  • 3:53, that djent sound, goddamn. Well, I'm gonna restring my guitar and start playing again.

  • @cowheap not to mention everything else of course, the whole video is a huge inspiration :D

  • Sikth is tight.

  • "hitting the right notes" LOL. he is trying to say "playing in key" but doesn't.

  • @ironmaidenowns not what he means at all.

  • @ironmaidenowns I can understand where misha is coming from. he had to teach himself the guitar and wasnt exposed to much music theory. same situation with me. also, i think there's a huge difference between just playing in key and playing something emotionally powerful

  • @ironmaidenowns Definitely not what he means. I think it's more in the context of hitting the right note for the right moment to create the perfect feeling you want for your music.

  • @ironmaidenowns No. Often playing the most powerful notes means borrowing from other keys. Like adding diminished arpeggios to a minor tonic

  • @heavymetalmastr I thought YouTube was for commenting on the subject of a video, not pointlessly annoying people about the same thing which doesn't relate to the topic-correct me if I'm wrong...

  • When he started playing Jetpacks all I could think was "Sunrise" from TesseracT lol

  • SIKTH

  • I love it when trolls crave attention.

  • And your a douche dick sucker too I see. Call me a troll. All you did was read back weeks on the comments to reply as an asshole. Go blow your dad you fuckin redneck. And this coming from a fagboy named disco. Hahahahahahahahahaya. You fuckin queer

  • i like how he gives it up for guthrie govan, meshuggah and others. this guy has zero ego compared to alot of guitarists and songwriters. mansoor consistently states in interviews that he is not a theoretical, technical guitarist and that his recording and production techniques are self taught. he has done very well considering this and people should respect him for that alone.

  • Awesome!

  • Very very interesting stuff! Checkin out your band and ideas man! Found you through Keith Merrow.

  • this guy is mindblowing, who said music has to have rules or boundaries, you don't have to learn music theory to understand music :)

  • Wow the way he over analyzes everything sucks.

  • Comment removed

  • Mr mansoor i find something eerily haunting about that riff. i cant quite put my finger on it. it kills me too see people who post things such as faggot and such on an instuctional guitar video.did we come here to learn or to belittle other people?music is supposed to bring us together not push us apart. too bad a select few cant figure that out.

  • How about you suck my balls. I'll say what I want when I want and where I want. I don't give a fuck what you think about me or my opinion. What a bunch of ass kissing liitle fuckers we've got here. Did you all forget this is YouTube . Don't post a video on YouTube if you don't want to be criticized. Faggot? What are you homophobic? And you tell me to keep my opinions to myself. Tell your mom I said hi.

  • @heaveymetalmaster mad bro?

  • I see the dislike total growing. Wonderful.

  • On three of yours you have 95 dislikes and compared to the likes he has ove 3000 and your at around 600. That's a pretty bad law of averages there.

  • Also that being said, if you check all six of chris broderick's chaos theory videos he totals only 58 dislike.

  • KoRn <3 :)

  • SIKTH!!! YESSSS thank u so much for mentioning one of the best bands of all time

  • Lol at heavymetalmastr! What does how he talks have anything to do with his guitar playing? Download peripherys album and go see them live. At least make sure you actually know what you are moaning about. Actual idiot

  • Mishas amazing!

  • Even though Munky uses 7 strings tuned to drop D with a High A

  • Dear guitar world. The over use of the word like along with the never-ending talk leads me to think that this man is Ill prepared for this lesson. Ill preparedness translates into poor public performance also meaning probably not very good live. If you can't improvise speech you probably can't improvise guitar. Nothing personal towards this young man but can we have some real instruction here please. All the talk no teaching makes jack a dull player. Try harder guitar world.

  • @heavymetalmastr I have you seen periphery live and heard misha's complex amazing riffs go listen to buttersnips or jetpack was yes then you will hear his genius

  • @heavymetalmastr I cant improvise very well, neither on guitar nor with my speech, this is true. Lucky for me i dont play a style of music where im required to improvise. Whether my band sucks live or not would really depend on who you ask, but apparently Guitar World thought it would be worth having me do several lessons, so i guess they didnt totally hate us haha. In other news im sorry your life didnt work out for you, and since you are 34, you can thank the law of averages for that one.

  • @Periphery my life is working out just fine and as for your law of averages i guess that means youll be a has been too..just like a slew of other artists that guitar world has allowed the chance to write their own articles.they have made many mistakes other than this one.

  • @heaveymetalmaster So salty.

  • @heaveymetalmaster Dude, stop being such a mad, jealous faggot, Misha's actually an awesome guitarist, who cares about his speech? He's not the singer of Periphery, is he? And as for being a hasbeen... that won't happen, since Periphery are a really creative, interesting band who sound awesome, and either way, better to be a hasbeen than to not "have been" i.e. you, trolling youtube videos with your unwelcome opinion, having failed to become a successful musician.

    Basically, get out :)

  • dear guitarworld. please don't use noise supressors on microphones because it makes people sound like theyre talking like this: "-hy -here's- -othin- -ensible- o -ay -ere, -ecaus- y- -oice- -ut's- -ut -all -he -ime."

  • Constantly focusing if the guitar strap will sit on it's place or not at his shoulder :D

  • Guthrie Govan FTW

  • Guthrie Govan freak of nature?

  • @anshumanchaube95 Well, maybe just a freak... lol JUST KIDDING!!! Gov is insane. I have a big respect for that guy.

  • I'd love to hear all of "jetpacks was yes" taught. I love that song

  • Im gonna give this a dislike only because he fucking says like like 500 goddamn times.

  • @RONDOC68 He's a guitarist, not an orator.

  • @Symm3trical5carz He's probably nervous...

  • what amp are you using in this video?

  • llike

    like

    like

    like

    like

you know like you know like

    like

  • it looks like this "like" thing is getting me some extra press and comments! Thanks guys, as much as it is unexpected it is much appreciated!

  • @Periphery well you rule so no worries!

  • @Periphery Fuck yeah Misha, you're the best! :)

  • @Periphery hey we just think it's great that you keep touch with fans and actually pay attention to what others say. not to mention the music is excellent. thanks for that especially

  • @xlambxofxruinx no prob dude!! love keepin in touch with yall!

  • @Periphery Hey man, I'd heard about your band around Facebook and hadn't bothered to check out any of your stuff but then I saw these videos and I really wanted to check your music out :D and then I was out with my friend and we went into a record store, first album we saw was yours, he was straight on it! Just thought I'd say how much I really love your music, hope to hear more soon :D cheers

  • @Periphery haters can go frak themselves trololo

  • @Periphery -- Like... Fucking kickass!!!! Thanks for be wicked meng!!!

  • @Periphery misha your a beautiful chocolate man.

  • @Periphery Wait who controls this acount all of u guys or just mostly Misha

  • @Periphery Fuck em, thank you very much for the lesson Misha. Much appreciated.

  • @Yameki Like...um, thanks!

  • @Periphery lol I didnt even notice it until now. Keep rockin Misha \m/

  • @Periphery I didn't notice the "like" thing at all. I actually thought you articulated your thoughts about Holdsworth and Mushuggah much better than I usually do when I'm trying to turn someone on to it.

If you do read this by the way, do you ever write drums first then try to shape a colorful / melodic riff over the top of it? I find programming drums on a grid or drumming with my fingers I can get rhythm structures I never think of on guitar.

  • @Periphery we love you misha! and youre a really awesome guitarist, an influence to me , really inspiring playin and yo are the reason to me to buy an 7 string guitar

  • AMEN ! meshuggah number 1 !

  • Is that even a seven string? And how many frets are on that guitar?

  • @HurricaneTBag i don't know, can you count?

  • @Xx6gui6tar6xX He says he plays seven strings but it looks like there's six little pegs, and the neck doesn't look all that thick.

    Asshole.

  • what tuning is he in?

  • marc okubo needs to teach in guitar world too

  • I don't think its misha's fault that guitar world upload videos of just talking.

  • Back when porn was coming out.

  • I never understand why people complain about talking, if you shut up and listen you might learn something. It's a lesson, he's teaching you. But you're too impatient to actually take any of it in.

If you want to hear him play guitar, listen to the fucking record.

  • @ChucklesMginty lol the only place people take anything they complain about is up the ass lololol well said man

  • @ChucklesMginty Because there is a difference between brevity and verbosity you half wit mother fucker. Most of what he's saying is not lesson related it's just excessive verbage.

    111 people are clueless

  • @bornburied alot more people enjoyed this than thought it was a waste of time..

  • @GuitarFox200 OH brother....When you respond to someones point it helps to know what he was responding to...So your statement is not in context.

But let's address your PERCEPTION of the point.14,369 people view this video-how many actually liked it is unknown. We know at least 221 liked it and the same time 35 disliked This means 256 out of over 14 thousand people voted. So not only did you not make a relevant point-the one you can't substantiate the one you have.DERP

  • @bornburied Or.. bare with me... why dont you fuck off, or enjoy the video, that he's took the time to make, to try and help people that arn't ungratful dicks like you :)

  • @GuitarFox200 LOL still don't get it do you? and as a result you resort to name calling.I might suggest to that excessive non relevant verbage DETRACTS from his own efforts. It's called constructive criticism.

HE RAMBLES, IS THAT HARD TO COMPREHEND?????????????????

    Bye troll

  • Respond to this video... MISHA, a 1/3 of your video is rambling, as a result you are less effective as a teacher.

  • Comment removed

  • @bornburied you left "respond to this video.." in your comment, as a result your comment is less effective as a youtube douche.

  • @ChucklesMginty well said!

  • Waster of time. That should be the title of this video. And I can't remember who said it but some comment said "well you didn't come here to listen to him talk did you? He's a great player. " than SHUT THE FUCK UP AND PLAY

  • i think hes nervious so hes rambeling to make up for it

  • There you go people djent is the way you play a power chord, not a subgenre that consists of syncopated riffs on the low string!

  • This would be an awesome drinking game

  • Hmmm... I wonder if he notices that he says "like" too much...???

  • SOLO PL0XXX

  • This IS inspiring.

  • I mean like why is this guy like talking for like almost like 4 minutes without like even playing like one note? You can like skip the first four minutes and then it's like he's not like really teaching you anything like in the last 30 seconds anyway. Kinda like waste of my time...

  • @MilanPolak C'mon Milan, it's his first time, and he's a talented guy.

  • @anshumanchaube95 yes might be but doesn't show in this video. I never said he wasn't... My comment only refers to this video which is really not useful at all (from a teaching point of view). Sorry.

  • Everyone really needs to shut up. Much respect Misha Mansoor!

  • Like like like like just play.

  • I didn't think he was ever gonna LIKE play the fucking thing.

  • This is why Misha is the man. He as the right influences! :)

  • this dude is a fuking moron...

  • @Cgolfsoccerguy Give him a fucking break, it's his first column and he's a very talented player.

  • He got more like than a facebook status

  • I could've sworn I heard a wrong note when he was playing the 4-note power chord.

  • He must scrape that neck pickup like crazy. Anybody else notice all the paint that's scratched off of there?

  • @uofm97 Those are Bare Knuckle pickups and are made like that.

  • @uofm97 bareknuckle pickups come in housings like that

  • @Stryker125 I see. I've never seen them before. Interesting idea, isn't it?

  • @uofm97 yeah they're pretty awesome, I'm planning on putting some im my guitar

  • @Stryker125 I might go check out some prices myself.

  • isnt the name of the song "buttersnips"?????????

  • Yeah, you can use that seventh string for interesting tones...or you can just pedal...like he does...

  • I hate metalcore, it's the new glam metal

  • @connorgow I see u dont know what metalcore is

  • @connorgow This is NOT metalcore.

  • OMG GUITAR WORLD FINALLY DID SOMETHING RIGHT!!!!

  • @GuitardedMark And that might be...?

  • I have no clue why guitar world has their name on this guys videos. He has no clue what he is talking about and has the worst tone i have ever heard.........I thought these videos were supposed to teach you something.....

  • @xkillerforhire You sir, are my hero. Everyone says this tone is "essential" for Djent, but it still sounds crappy.

  • and ah, ah, ah and ah ah like, yeah like that

  • 3:40 Finally, like, plays guitar.

  • like 3.41 of talking before we had any like guitar

  • Back when "Porn" was coming out..

  • NO DISC....GUITAR WORLD FAIL!!!!

  • moreeee from misha please

  • Seems a little less nervous today =D

  • Like.
