The term Parkour was coined by David Belle and his father, who taught it to French soldiers so that they may move more efficiently and easily in disaster situations. Sebastian Foucan (a good friend of David Belle) coined the term "freerunning" when he branched out of parkour and started doing more creative movements instead of pure efficient movement.

Parkour is the art of motion, it is the discipline of motion without constriction to form, and the fastest for getting from point a to b. Parkour is the art of moving from point A to point B overcoming all obstacles in the most EFFICIENT manner possible. Freerunning on the other hand is getting from point A to point B in the most CREATIVE and IMPRESSIVE way possible. Flips and tricks by definition are useless in Parkour, since they do not make you faster. In Freerunning, flips and tricks are an essential part of the sport.
