It's amazing how many people put Neil Diamond for no good reason as I can see it besides the fact that he didn't have ay interest to package himself as a run-of-the-mill industry standard musician. He might not be a Neil Young, but he never tried to be.
This is great! Neil Diamond has given us such great songs over the years, he can be anyway he wants! He's genuinely honest and very much a gentleman...
Got to give him credit, he's loyal as hell to the people who supported his music and career the most over the years. He knew as early as Hot August Night the dedication shown by his true fans and he never played the game, never sold out, and always played for the fans, not for the business or the suits. I have nothing but respect for the man who did it all his way and I figure he's entitled to dump a little on those who tried like hell to keep him down.
Neil wasn't drunk, he said later he was pissed off at what Paul Simon had said. To have the person who was supposed to be inducting you MAKE FUN OF YOUR SONGS made him mad--understandably.
@mewahbbz were did he say that he was upset at simon? I have not seen him say this, he tweeted what a great night it was, simon was right in saying it, the streisand thing did delay his deserving induction. He credited neil and his great songs.
I love Neil. I love his songs. I watched this after seeing his sincere, heart-on-his-sleeve Late Show interview. What a contrast. No excuse for the 3k ticket banter, the "S", "F", and "JC" bombs whatsoever. I HOPE he was drunk. He destroyed an important moment in the history of his iconic career. Paul Simon was visibly embarrassed for Neil. What a shame.
I think he was given the award in 1989. For some reason he chose to accept it this year. Does anybody here like roasted duck. I like roasted duck and I love to roast duck slowly over an open fire. Thanks Neil Diamon for all the beautiful music you have given to so many.
Always loved him, went to more of his concerts than I could count. But thought his speech was appalling. Unlike Darlene Love who was beyond gracious (and BTW waited just as long and was just as deserving. Just my opinion)
His way of telling all the pretentious idiots, as Paul Anka might do, I did it my way, and bugger off the whole lot of you if you don't like it. To be the RRHOF Susan Lucci was a disgrace that has now been corrected, and high bloody time too! I'm just surprised he wasn't even nastier given his state of jet lag having to fly to America.
We Love you Neil, and the RRHOF should of put you in earlier and they needed a good tongue lashing. They are lucky to have you. YOU are one of the greatest singer/songwriters of our time.
His Mom is still alive (90's) Recent interview that he talked about her.. It was just few months ago. She wanted to go see him get some award but couldn't cause she had a really bad cold. Neil promised her when he finished his tour which was just a month or so ago he would take her somewhere. I believe she is in a nursing home in LA close to Neil. If she died he would have tweeted it. He stays in touch with his fans. Just got engaged to his manager Katie McNeil last week.
i wonder if the no speech was his way of saying F#$k off to them for taking so long to induct him, he def seems to have a tone of displeasement in most of what he said..
still a bit surprised, where's Rose his mom, is she still w/ us? ..not sure.. i remember her as a kid growing up 2 doors down from Neil's family.. she use to make me a sandwhich once in a while and my mom use to buy me & my bro's clothes from "diamonds clothing store" brighton beach (Neil's dad owned it")..the great ol' days.
I loved this man's music in the 60s+70s . I think his music went downhill a lot from the early 80s. I think it's better to listen to him than to watch him especially at this late stage of his career and life. He doesn't give very interesting interviews. He was obviously very drunk at the acceptance speech of th RRHO, very disrespective, downright ignorant and arrogant. Not a nice person at all. Let's just concentrate on the music, not the person.
@ardranny I dont agree, Neil diamond had 3 very good albums in the last years and why should he be respectful? For letting him wait 20 years for his Induction??????
Neil would have been better off by not showing up (as did Joni Mitchell) or just politely thanking people who have helped him (as did Bob Seger who also thanked the fans). Neil lived a blessed life. He didn't need to sink to the level of the Mock Hall.
Rock fans in general should stop worrying about who is in the hall of fame. Their selection doesn't make much sense. Are pop songs a problem? Well hall of famer Elton John has Little Jeanie and That's What Friends Are For. What's the difference between those and You Don't Bring Me Flowers? Brian Epstein the Beatle's manager isn't in there. Neither are Chicago or the Moody Blues - really huge rock bands. The whole thing is like High School. Some people are considered cool and some not.
That's what I was thinking...I mean, he looks tired, and so he should be, but he didn't thank the fans or anyone significant other than his family. Plus, his language was atrocious...Poor Neil.
@Kassy4071 - I completely agree. I love Leon and Tom Waits, but when i include their songs on a CD mix, i usually have to explain who they are . This is never the case with Neil Diamond whose many hits have made him a legend, known to all generations. He should have been among the first to be enshrined.
I love it!!!! Look like him or not, he wrote and performed all his hits..he was pn the same charts as the beattles, dylan, young, and elvis. He is as successful as any of the 4. They kept him out which was and is BS. 44 top 40 hits all written b y him. A salute to u neil, and they can go fuck themselves for not acknowleging your history and track record in rock n roll long ago. Neil was ticked about this, and he peppered the group that kept him out
God I love him!!!! Exhaustion, jet lag, excitement and maybe a couple of drinks will even make a ROCKSTAR a little goofy! Oh "and I'm not a man who likes to swear.." except for when I'm inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame!!!!! hahaha! Rock On Neil!!!!! xoxoxo
Certain musicians fall into the category of true entertainers. Sammy Davis Jr was known as "The Great Entertainer" and Wayne Newton is "Mr Entertainment" or " Mr Las Vegas". and Neil Diamond is from that school when he puts on a show. He makes sure that he gives a stellar performance and that everyone is thrilled with the show.
Neil doesn't usually use obscenities because he's an intelligent man. I think he chose that language to say, "Hey, guys, 20 years! Really!? I've written some classic Rock!" He wasn't drunk or drugged...he WAS jet lagged & tired. He has a dry sense of humor. He was dry, irreverent & at the same time playful with all those guys who couldn't get past the fact that he writes what he feels, regardless of type of music. And we're all lucky he does. You go Neil!
With the help of the comments here I'm beginning to get it. He was making fun of the hall and its pomposity. Did he sing Caroline twice on purpose to make them hear it twice.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with him, just a bit of well deserved sarcasm from him towards all the people who did not recognize his talent for so many years! He did it on purpose and was enjoying every minute of it!! The remarks about the $3000 tickets and the "too much money" is so true! He was just honest! Bravo for Neil! He was fantastic!!
I'll tell you the reason it took so long. Neil mastered so many genres of music that he transcended rock n roll. You don't think of him as a rocker not because he didn't make classic rock but because he also made superb love songs, movie themes, catchy pop, folk, and religious anthems. I don't know who to compare him to. He is a gripping performer and he's gorgeous. He has it all. He truly is one of a kind.
If you stop and think about it, the delay in admitting him borders on the absurd. Blondie is in the Hall. The Dave Clark Five are in there. The Ramones are in there. That's not to mock their work. I like them all. Great music. But Neil's song catalog alone is astounding. His songs are moving, deep, passionate. And he performed them to perfection. He made hits for thirty years. I'd put Neil at the top of pop music. He wrote more rock than Simon and Garfunkel did. The rock hall is a joke.
Yeah, I think he is a bit drunk. I think he had a few nice drinks from Australia to US in First Class. And now he will fly back to Sydney. I hope the plane is full of booze. I suggest.....
@stuporduper I guess I'm messed up too 'cause I think the same thing! Neil was funny, entertaining and a bit strange all rolled into one. Not bad at all for something off the top of his head!
He's probably Pissed Off his friends The Monkees didn't get the same respect he'd had! I'd be Pissed, too,'Cause I'm a fan of both! Come to think of it,I AM Pissed Off they're not in,Too! C'MON,JANN,YOU JACKWAD! ELECT THEM IN! It's only right!
Couple of things. He is 70 years old. He said he has been flying for 26 hours. Most likely jet lag, exhaustion, and one or two drinks would have this effect put all those things together and he would appear to be a bit tipsy. He kept making the comment about the three thousand dollar seats, and his people can't afford that. He cares about his fans. Neil marches to the beat of his own drum. He never forgot his roots. He has and always will be the solitary man.
Why didn't he write a speech? And why couldn't he get his act together for 10 minutes? He managed to do that for his performance. I suspect he was trying to look cool. And if he had nothing to say he should have said thank you and left. He dragged it out for eternity.
@asianwomansl I don't think he was on drugs. Just wanted to "stick it up" the R n R hall of fame powers that be (those who voted him NOW and not 15-20 years ago). He even made the point that there are still more arists yet to be inducted. In that context, I think Neil is a champion. What's your fave Neil Diamond CD ?
On June 8, 1966, I was watching "Wing Ding", an "American Bandstand" type of show in DC. This guy wearing a 10-gallon hat and playing guitar came on and sang this song about Belinda and Jim and Sue that I'd been hearing on the radio. At the end of the song, the show host asked the guy what state he was from. I figured it would be Texas or Oklahoma. But he said he was from the state of Brooklyn. I didn't know his name then, but I know it now, and he's still from the state of Brooklyn!
And Alice Cooper thinks they may be the first ones kicked out? Haha It's okay Neil doesn't give a $h#t haha. Maybe if you had inducted him 20 years ago, like you should have, you would have got a nicer speech. Yay!! Neil, you tell 'em how it is!!
Wow fantastic stuff. Neil "kicked some backsides" of the people who run/ manage/ coordinate the so-called R n R hall of fame. Onya Neil and keep the music coming for many more years....
WITW?? I am a BIG fan and have been to many, many ND concerts ...but I don't think he will remember anything he said so I guess he should watch the video sometime.
So what if he was drunk, it was his night. He made a lot of good memories for a lot of us.
