It's a great trip, sleeper coach for overnight. You can even rent a private room with two beds for a bit more. Some people don't like the extra time, but I figure most of it's spent sleeping, and I really sleep sound with rails rocking me back and forth.
Yes, it is all uphill from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. This Chiang Mai to Bangkok train has it easy as it is downhill. Much of the equipment has seen better days (Hitachi and Hyundai) and the SRT knows it needs new equipment but as usual, money is the key here.
Ive been on the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, had a first class sleeper and got off at surin, really enjoyed it and i intend to use it in a month when im back again, but it never ever felt we was going as fast as video, infact we was around 4/5 hrs late lol
When I was a young child, I remember seeing newspaper ThaiRaht with heading saying the "new" locomotive had arrived to replace aging GE locomotive ...... that was in the mid 70's
Yes, It's partly because of the geography, from Uttaradit to Chiang-Mai(250km), the railway line crosses two montains, following a river valley, making a 90km detour around Lampang. The line is not as direct as the motorway, and was built in the 1920, for the steam engine of that period. it's also a single track and the crossing of trains involves a loose of time .The maximum speed is 130km/hour in the central plain, not so bad for a 1 meter gauge railway!
Train ride is the most fun! Leave BKK at 6PM, then you go to the dining car and get wasted! Free overnight lodgung as well! Wake up the next day with hang-over and go TOUR Chiang Mai! YAY!
It takes between 10 and 14 hours from Chiang-Maï to bangkok, it depends from wich train you take. The train is often more expensive than the plane. The train is quite comfortable, and it is very fun and reliable. If you like trains do not hesitate.Book at least 3 days in advance.
When I was in Thailand in 1985, basically all the trains left their destination around 6PM and so the trip to ChaingMai was an overnight trip, not allowing one to see too much of the countryside but saving the cost of a room for one night...the Thais were so nice, but police handed me a card in English warning me not to accept food gifts from anyone as I Might be drugged and robbed. They would regularly sweep the train and throw the trash out on the railway tracks...
its am over night maybe 16 to 18 I cant remember to well, its comfy if you get a bunk only for 2 people(that is if ur not alone), otherwise you could end up sharing with god knows who!!!!!!
excellent video - great race :)

The only good thing on thailands railroad are the prices.
And never take a train when you need to pick up a flight - mine coming from the south had 17 hours delay. Haven't calculate that in my schedule.

is it because of the terrain that's why it takes so long to get to Chiang Mai?
