  • The original recording had some great bass backup singing that sounded really cool.

  • I trully think country should have stayed this way, dnt get me wrong I love the new stuff, but the old country was the best

  • this is surely some of the best country music anyone would want to hear, 5 stars most definate

  • I never did think this song got the attention it should have. It is one of the cleverest, and David presents it so well.

    ...Bill

  • this song was supposed to kinda a joke. but a lady in my town took it serious. her husband would stop at a bar every night by a bottle of lord calvert and throw the cork away, then crawl home when it was gone. so she did just what the song said, and she is making a good living, she quit her job and still a lot of people go to her bar just to see what is going on. go baby go

  • and if you ever get a little extra money invest in a bar. you will not regret it.

  • The lyrics are absolute poetry, captures almost every cliche' of the beer joint lifestyle, and the terms...so dead on..."there'll be no reason you can't stop off here first...", man, how often have I heard that term, "let's stop off at (fill in the blank of your favorite country beer joint or tavern). The song was so dead on then, and is still dead on now...pubs, beer joints, taverns, bars...since the dawn of time, a culture all their own...:-)

  • You could never release this song today--it's not politically correct. Love the song-always have, always will!

  • i wish classic country like dave still was around. classic song. it gets stuck in my head all of the time.!

  • heard this song in 1981 in honesdale pa loved it ever since ps im from scotland

  • loved Frizzell and West...one of my faves of all time

  • @wendyresqlady My wife is going to hire a wino to decorate our home...LOL

  • @coywmoore tell her to go for it , she might make a lot of money and save yours.

  • i been trying to figure the name of this song i finally did i love this song

  • Modern country is just pop acts who can't make as pop so they pose as country.

  • i actually got to meet him and have my album signed and saw him in concert it was awesome

  • Classic country music is not extinct it just in shadow of the new stars, all the new stars that i readed bio on take there music from classic stars

  • this song was recommended in "successful lyric writing" by sheila davis

  • Great

  • I remember this song playing a LOT when I was a kid in VA riding in the car w/ my grandma. This really takes me back to some of the best year sof my life. Old country is the only true country in my book. I love this

  • Big shoes to fill but did a tremendous job!

  • classic country will never die in our hearts and homes if we dont let it so play classic country loud and proud

  • my grandfather has the 45

  • I miss the times when mama and daddy were real!!!

  • WBCN in Boston played album-oriented rock when I was going to BU, but the Morning guy made an exception and played this country song when it came out, because he thought it was so good. Or hilarious. Or both. Such a human touch, and so funny -- best lyrics ever, and so TRUE, in some situations.

  • This was real country not that pop trash they pass off as country music today....

  • @MrSartak1977 Amen to that, brother!

  • i heard this song while i was bushhogging with the john deere and I LOVE THIS SONG!

  • ONE OF THE BEST PURE TRUE COUNTRY VOICE, AND OF COURSE THE SONG TOO. I JUST WATCHED IT 4 TIMES CONTINUOUSLY. HIS DUETS WITH SHELLY WEST ARE SO SOOTHING AND TOUCHING TOO.

THIS IS REAL COUNTRY DOWN TO HUMAN ROOTS.

    THANKS.SO VERY MUCH .

  • hell yea give me a pabst blue ribbon and requetin this song on 105.3

  • Man, I miss this type of music.

  • studio version hit #1 in Billboard, 8-14-82. God bless!

  • Country music, at its best! Today's stars need to take notes

  • I was a (pretty bad) DJ at a country music station when I graduated from high school in the mid-eighties. This song had been out for a few years, but it was still a favorite request. I haven't heard it in probably 20-some odd years. I remembered it all, though!

  • country and disco not a good mix still good times

  • i havnt heard this song forever

  • My kinda wife!!!!!!

  • Hell what the call country music now is like rock I miss the old country music

  • Here you go mommy! I love you so much!

  • I love this song

  • tammy looked awesome!

  • Shelly West also sang this song

  • @hellfireo1cu812

Shelly West was a frequent duet partner with David Frizzell, so she probably sang "I'm Gonna Hire a Wino" on stage a lot. If she ever recorded it, she probably just put the song on an album. I only ever heard David Frizzell's version of this song on the radio.

  • @hellfireo1cu812 Can you find her version anywhere? I remember the song but can't find the female artist that sang it...

  • @AcrossTheBIGPond IT WAS SHELLY WEST WITH DAVID THAT SANG THIS SONG.....

  • Didn't a famous female version of this come out @ some time...anyone know?

  • smart woman 8-)

  • top top tune

  • I love to sing this song-changed it up a bit being a female-I say "I said" instead of she said! Love it!

  • This is GREAT!!!!!!

  • I've loved this song for ages but didn't know who sang it - glad I found it!

  • love this song it is great

  • Yes, classic country music that's becoming nearly extinct with today's "stars"

  • if you mean "stars" such as the likes of Taylor Swift that aint country I agree.....Gimme Mr Frizzell and Bellamy Brothers etc. any ol day

  • @bakogoofball I might as well make that 50 thumbs up!

  • @bakogoofball ....absolute agree.......im only 24 however i rather listen to these songs than any other......kinda call me old fashion thanks to my daddy and poppa

  • Excellent

  • one of the best voices in country music, so smooth and controlled. this song, and 'your the reason GOD made oklahoma' that he and shelly west sing together, PURE COUNTRY!!!

  • Ive loved this song for ever! And still rock it! And still will! I need to find me woman like that!

  • classic country. Damn i wish this style was still around.

  • @montanastranger

This style IS still around! It just costs twice as much on the jukebox at the bar. But it's worth the investment to see faces of the older (50+) folks there light up!

Start off with Coe's "You Never Even Called Me By My Name," followed by Freddie Hart's "Easy Loving." You will HAVE the attention of the entire house, and contributions will be forthcoming!

  • @montanastranger Me too, old country music is so much better.

  • @smurfboywv

Yes, yes it is. I'd rather listen to old country than most of the new country its just not country anymore.

  • YeeeeeeeeHaw!

  • Classic country! Can't get enough of it.

  • I have heard this song many many times, but it's the first time I have ever seen David Frizzell

  • Classic.

  • this is my kind of house
