  • my sister's boyfriend is going to Georgia Tech and I'm making him a CD about songs with Georgia in it. This is one of them(:

  • im 13 years old, but my mom was born in 1962 and loved every song in the heart of Motown. and i love my oldies! my friends don't care for them, but there's nothing better than some Temps, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, Diana Ross, Delfonics, and more! ♥

  • Completely about a suicide pact.

  • "Because i'd rather live in his world, than live without him in mine" - I love that line!

  • this song is 10,000 times better than some damn episode of a network tv show. LIKE THIS IF YOU LIKE SOUL MUSIC MORE THAN HOUSE

  • @paulcbarrera I was bitching about people like this on a Billie Holiday video a few minutes ago

  • @paulcbarrera Why can't people like both? God knows there are few decent shows on TV now-a-days. House is 1 of the few exceptions.

Listening to this, I feel the love that my dad and I felt for each other. I always think of him when I hear it. We may not have always gotten along, but we still loved each other.

  • Gladys Knight's voice is legendary, a queen of soul...up there with Aretha Franklin.

  • love this song

  • love the singing, thanks for posting =)

  • This song would be nothing without that Motown bassline played by Bob Babbitt.

  • ABSOLUTE CLASS... there is no better singer bar.... barbra streisand..... fantastic

  • ima take a midnight train back to the old days. This type of music makes you apperciate a lot better.

  • Is the urban legend true about this song? I know for a fact that it was originally a country-western song titled "Midnight Plane To Houston" It was recorded originally by it's writer, Jim Weatherly.

Now, here's the urban legend; Weatherly's original country song was supposedly about a real person; that person being a then unknown Farrah Fawcett!

Does anyone know if that's true?

You know how these myths get started about popular songs.

  • Sumptuous. One of the finest soul songs ever, IMHO. Have loved this since first hearing it back in' 76, Beautifully performed and arranged - does it get much better than this?

  • LUV...LUV...LUV dis song....one of da best songs by Gladys Knight!!!!!

  • this is moms favorite singer. no one compares in her mind.

  • My mum listens to this type of music aswell as todays. I was brought up with this kind of music (1995 I was born) because my mum listened to it, Yeah you have your Katy Perry's, Lady Gaga's, Beyonce's etc. but even though I love all them I always love a good classic too.

    Thanks for the post :)

  • @Benlad221

lol. Didn't see your comment. We must have had the same parents!

Nice to see a fellow 90's baby who respects the classics. I completely agree with you. :)

  • ...and why does Justin Bieber have more views than this?

  • @HornGoddess08 cause the american population is filled with mindless idiots that have no sense or taste in good music

  • @HornGoddess08 who the fu** is Justin Bieber?

  • Those of you that absolutely love music Jim Weatherly wrote this ,neither one of us wants to be the 1st to say goodbye & the best thing that ever happened to me! God bless!

  • Voice of an Angel !

  • Gladys "Melodia" Knight como é gostoso ouvir voce cantar.

  • Nice to see a good song without any thumbs down!

  • i know thats the right...im 20 and i enjoy the old school music is that wrong???

  • Gladys and the Pips hit #1 soul, and pop, #19 AC, in Billboard. God bless!

  • i loved hearing this song when i was just a kid and today i luv it just as much! i never get tired of her voice.she puts so much feeling into it! somethimg thats hard to find these days!

  • One song I don't mind having in my head for days on end, and the number of songs that are in that group is very few. I only wish that I could sing this properly.

  • Heard this on the radio on my way home tonight...Had to not go home until it ended..So good!

  • You just cannot dislike this song. Good times, good times!

  • Amen, my friend x

  • She says: "I rather live in his world than live without him in mine"

Quite possibly: the strongest love statement ever put into song.

  • my mom and dad played this music i love it more than my generations music

  • Mmmmm...sing it Gladys!!

  • I so love this song and i sing it very loudly in the car ( very badly ) it is one of the all time classic songs and I do not think that anyone could cover it and do it justice, Gladys you are the one.

  • L.O.V.E.

  • just heard this on the radio on the way home and hoped i'd be able to find it when i got home. Thank God for you tube

  • lol just had a classic moment and was thinking of this song. I love my classics and new songs

  • classic.

  • The first adult song I liked as a kid!!

  • Ah, Gladys - no one does it like you baby. And you and the Pips can do it live, too, 'cos I've seen ya. An absolute classic. Like the guy says, they don't make them this good anymore.

  • Like this if you think of House whenever you hear this song now. xD

  • @nebulapony I think of 30 Rock... when kenneth misses his train for the 11:45 train to GA

  • @nebulapony

I think of Las Vegas when she sang this on that show.

  • @nebulapony why would I hear this?

  • @nebulapony sorry, but gladys knight > network tv.

  • @paulcbarrera Evidently not. [trollface]

  • love love love this song

  • I went to church with this woman and had no idea who it was...WOW TOTAL FAIL

  • Beautifull song that inspired the generations that changed the course of music to what it is today. Ironic. We need more professional covers of greats like this, by todays talented artists in order to inspire people, once again, to write real music again without the reliance on bubble gum pop video labels. This song is a sensation.

  • How can there be so many people writing it "midnight train to george"???

  • Just brilliant. These were days when songs told a story, were well song, well written and arranged, and exuded a certain irony yet beautiful and profound just the same.

How can I listen to this and take most of today's music (is that what it seriously?.

On a lighter note, being a New York kid, I used to figure that he was taking a train from Penn Station, being that trains from Grand Central went north and west !!

  • honey got a booty like pow pow pow... honey got some boobies like wow oh wow... the pips have nothing on usher!

  • tis song is so sad 2 me it reminds me of how i neva got to meet my grandfather i am cryin right now =(

  • @DaWebkinzluver212

You know I have 3 grandkids now. And I assume I have more to come that I may never meet. Don't cry, If you have enough feelings to thing of your grandfather, then I'm sure you will meet him someday....And he will be proud of the fact that you thought of him

  • I never really grew up with music like this . Like , my parents did , and they taught me to appreciate the value of music , & hearing this , i think , wow . Really ? What happened to the soul ? The music these days is horrendous compared to the old motown oldies .

    I love it !

  • @savonahbaybee

I'm one of the ones from back there, who was blessed to grow up when this kind of music was COMMON! People use to have REAL talent and they knew how to use it. No need for profanity, violence and sex talk when you have talent. Hey, I only listen to the classics.

  • it music like this that ake me happy cuz i loe music and most music we listen to is stupid. where did the music go

  • why does everyone metion his age? well, I'm 15 and love this song

  • in SF Bay, feeling homesick for GA.

  • can anyone tell me what exactly happened that made Gladys break up with the Pips? They sounded so good together and just can't imagine such harmony separating.

  • @wolfstev76 She LITERALLY jumped the midnight train to Georgia. We like to think racism is thin in modern times but even Motown Records (by and for Blacks) was weaseling their artists. between the poor pay and the possibility of losing the man she loved, well She made the decision that lasts, Love knows no inflation. To this day she is still happy, and well, Living in Georgia and owner/ operator of A soul food cafe in Atlanta Georgia. May god continue to bless that girl.

  • @bigfootskitty always comes down to that dollar. I know how that goes. She gave us some very uplifting songs with alot of feeling. I'm happy for her that God smiled on her and she is doing well. Thank you for the info.

  • There isn't much songs like these anymore and to be honest it's a shame because I'm really tired of hearing how people have cash or who's fucking who. I don't like hearing that all the damn time. I grew up with songs like this. My mother listen to songs from the oldies so I got hooked on them and they takes me back. I like songs of today but I love songs from the past. The music generation sometimes don't have any meaning what so ever.

  • @Goodiez83 Amen to that. I've got your back on that one, sweetie.

  • @Goodiez83 if in this life we have learned anything. It is that life will repeat itself. Sometimes it just takes a little pressure to bring it forth. And it might already be here. Just don't watch one continent, look at the world and see if the quality of words exist past that which resides in your circle. i.e. - Asa - Jailer or fire on the mountain. :-)

  • @XinAngel if old days are coming back, they gotta hurry because I can wait no longer than this!

  • @carolawabdy :-)

  • @Goodiez83 same with me lol <3

  • @Goodiez83

Hey Goodie, if you notice something...all those folks braggin' about have money don't last....they are mostly one-hit wonders! Gladys is classic!!!!!!

  • This is really making me goosebumps!!!!

    ;j

  • Many singer's warm Midnight train to Georgia over,

But there's ONLY ONE who the song belongs to !

The one and only GLADYS KNIGHT and the Pips !!!!!!!!

I heard that one of the Pips Edward Patten Passed Away sooooooooooooooo sad.

  • LOVE IT!!!!

    Can't help but sing along...

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!

  • Thanx for this song. There r times that i wanna take her advice, but i'm cann't take on many responsibilities. have to go to finish them to the end of line.

  • Good to see the original. Thanks.

  • @scclj

This was a huge hit, but it's NOT the original. The original was a country/folk song recorded by it's writer Jim Weatherly. It was called "Midnight Plane To Houston"

Check it out on the Songfacts Website

  • @scclj

ITA! This is simply too beautiful. Such talent people use to have.

  • I Love This Song
