I am sure Glenn Gould would have considered this a 'Holywood-version' of the Emperor and indeed Murray drags it out quite a bit ; but isn't this the right way to play it ,with such emphasis and dynamics ; I think it is ,this masterfull execution of the most powerfull romantic piece ever written .
Absolute connection to the inner soul, both by the performers as the vehicle, and primarily, of course, by the composer, who heard this before it was performed for the first time.
And now we have rap.........
The human condition is not improving, is it.................
very good tempo albeit the touch is a tad harsh but for a perfect rendition of this see Uchida Ozawa performance by saito kinen orchestra in 2006 on this site
This is very beautiful indeed. Check out this movement with Cliburn in Moscow- it may surprise some as perhaps being the most poetic of them all despite its vintage.
These great performances of the 5 Beethoven Concertos with Perahia & Marriner are being re- released on DVD available in the UK from 9th February, not sure about elsewhere in the world though. So glad to see them re-released, along with Zimerman & Bernstein two of my favourite performances of these works.
I have heard Perahia in live performance twice and it is an experience unlike any other. I do not know how anyone can create such beauty. How is it possible.
Such delicacy, poignancy and grace- an absolute, soul-stirring masterpiece

@Rowly13 Interesting- what would constitute a Hollywood version? I love Glenn Gould's playing - have never heard this man before, but love him.

@coralarch Have you listened to both their interpretations ? Just try and hear the subtle differences between the two .

@Rowly13 LOL, impossible-I'd love to hear subtle differences, but- I am partly deaf.

This is my favourite classical piece ever....I will play it before I die. But I have to learn to play the piano first.....hehe
I can actually see Perahia feel the music. Thanks for loading.

I cry many times when I hear this movement or see it performed. So moving. A long gaze into the maestro's soul and tormented heart.

Magnifique interprétation... je n'avais pas entendu Murray Perahia depuis fort longtemps, un vrai plaisir de le retrouver dans cette pièce.

if you don't watch the face and gestures of the pianist it is a lovely interpretation

Great pianist. Very better IMHO than 20 years ago. That wonderful phrasing, that magic control of dynamics between p and ppp, really
a poet of piano.
