When she is in the USA she slips back to her american accent and vice versa. Personally I couldn't care less what accent she uses - she's a brilliant actress and the UK has allowed her to really shine. I mean from Scully to Lady Deadlock was one hell of a leap - and she did it!

Gillian's accent is legitimate. She spent a good portion of her childhood in London. it is in fact her natural accent. But when her family moved back to the States, she was often teased for her Brit accent and so, she did her best to adopt a more American accent. So I suppose it would be fair to say that BOTH of her accents are legitimate.

That happens to me when I'm around people with accents or speaking habits after only a half an hour or so. (Which is a real bother after French class, and when visiting with foreign family, because people think I'm putting it on, when really I'm trying to speak normally).

Her parents moved to London when she was about 2 or 3 years old and she grew up and went to school there until her parents moved back to the US when she was 11years old. She had learned to speak with a british accent so as to fit in with her british classmates, & she relearned to speak with an American accent for the same reason after moving back to US. Neither accent is fake, they are both real.

But when she was doing the Xfiles, she spoke with her American accent developed as a school girl after moving back to US. She used the same accent while portraying Scully and in her real life, it was a real American accent. @MEareCAT She did clearly mention it happened quite a while ago, so my guess is that she was around 5 or 6 when she brutally murdered that poor goldfish and hamster accidentely. She couldn't help it, she was just a child. So please don't call that fine looking lady a bitch. (I'm very much against animal abuse as well ofcourse!)

@FactualTruthProvider Actually, Gillian is a natural born American, born in Chicago, Illinois. Her parents moved to London when she was about 2 or 3 years old and she grew up and went to school there until her parents moved back to the US when she was 11years old. She had learned to speak with a british accent so as to fit in with her british classmates, & she relearned to speak with an American accent for the same reason after moving back to US. Neither accent is fake, they are both real.

@FactualTruthProvider A fake accent would be one that she used only for an acting role, then went back to her natural one in real life. But when she was doing the Xfiles, she spoke with her American accent developed as a school girl after moving back to US. She used the same accent while portraying Scully and in her real life, it was a real American accent. When she moved back to UK after Xfiles, she picked up again on her British accent from her childhood.. so that is also a real accent.

Lord knows she's proven she can be hilarious when she wants to be, and it fits that she's doing the accent, given she's an American with a British sense of humor.

@florencelovme Look at interviews where she's talking to the British press, and when she does work with the BBC, fucker.
When dealing with british media, she puts on her natural accent (similar to John Barrowman, who puts his original Scottish accent on when he's with his close family, but speaks with an American accent outside of that).

Just because that's how he handles it, doesn't means she's exactly the same. It's like how, in my family, even though we all know both English and Spanish, when in the US, we speak English. Hands down, even in our own home. In Mexico, strictly Spanish, even in our own home. It's rather common. It's a reaction to societal norm. Which, Mel Gibson isn't normal :D

I didn't say she was the same, I was basically pointing out the big difference in people who don't need to prove anything when talking in different accents. Gillian is a phony. It definitely has to do with her psychological background. No need to constantly switch back and forth on different chat shows if she was comfortable with who she is.
