  • Thanks so much for these classic songs!

  • If they ever DARED to do a movie on Ms. Mahalia...Kelly Price or LaShun Pace would be great choices!!! Mahalia was the QUEEN of Gospel; you could just FEEL the anointing in her voice!!! Whoo!!!

  • i can't keep it to myself just had to share.luv it liuv it

  • I HEAR JESUS IN THIS SONG INDEED!!!!!

  • This is my Favorite singer even when I was a little girl I loved her -people say that I sound like her I wished that I did -she is a Legend there will never be another like her

  • This is a beautiful song...go Mahalia You sing it to Him! Yes God, Praise God!! You are awesome!!

  • PURE CLASS

  • @tmcd1231 AMEN!

  • @RoseGarden1951 I agree however, my point is there may be an unknown who can really give the message justice The Gospel regardless of who sing, play, or preach it is truly about whom recieve the message. I never judge for that is truly left for the Lord yet I do voice my opion which like the Word do not change this space is for comment of the video and not the writers we all do agree. If you did not have a test how can you have a testimony.

  • Clearly, this video illustrates what one woman can do with but one talent. When the Judgment Day rolls along, you know what she has earned. What shall be your excuse?

  • I felt like runnin' too! Be blessed in the Name of Jesus all who view this; and bless God's people. Those who Reverence God, remember what God said to Abraham: "I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you.". So bless and be ablessing. That is how Mahalia tried to live, as far as I can see.

  • @divawriter I dont she would think anything, about Queen Latifah playing her, especially since shes not living. Its not fair to speculate. And since u brought it up, there were many who speculated about Mahalias sexuality. So now, we dont, have the lesbian playing Mahalia, we now have a illiterate whore playing her, Fantasia. When it comes to sexuality, I think we should all mind our business.

  • @MahaliaistheQueen

    That wasn't very nice.

  • Great music and great singers will always stay in style.

  • Mahalia first and fore most knew the Lord so any one who plays her that is the first requirement. She was not only gifted and talented but annoited. So choosing a person on apperance and sound will not cut it can they deliver the message.

  • @hap2nogod Perhaps Tyler Perry would be able to find someone to play her character. His cast of actors are many.. but let us not judge who should play that role as much as people of God should pray and ask God for guidance in who should be the best person that could portray such a wonderful woman and get the message that she would have gotten out thru her anointed spiritual voice. Rosegarden1951@yahoo.com

  • Lashun Pace should play her MY GOD that would be bananas

  • @mrjayvee99 YESSSS!!! OMG Talk about BLOCKBUSTER!!!

  • Speaking of Queen Latifah acting her on the screen-- yes, I can see that since the physical attributes are there. But I wonder what Mahalia herself would think about a gay woman portraying her?

    Not judging, just wondering...

  • @divawriter Good question, but knowing how Mahalia loved the Lord and how she really knew the Lord, she would probably say "Well, there aint a one of us thats perfect but God loves us anyways..so why should the gays be any different!" :) And she would be speaking the truth too. God loves ALL people, He doesnt love the sin we committ but being a liar, theif, adulterer etc...will send one to hell just as fast as being gay will.

  • @divawriter I dont she would think anything, especially since she not living. Its not fair to speculate. And since u brought it up, there were many who speculated about Mahalias sexuality. • Thanks for posting. I always loved Mahalia because she sings right from her heart which was filled with the love of God. She was an outstanding vocalist. Love it.

  • Yes, Jennifer Hudson would be a great selection to play Mahalia in a movie.

  • @thegrits523 Agree Jennifer could play this role but doubt she would want to gain 20-30 to play this role. A fat suit would work just as well, I guess. I really don't want them to do a movie b/c they (Hollywood) really might distort the truth. She's the Greatest that ever Sang Gospel..some stories are just better left as memories. imo.

  • Good Suggestion Tankeia!

  • In terms of a possible movie, Queen Latifah definitely has the stature and the acting ability to play the part. However, Jennifer Hudson could very well pull it off vocally although her recent weight loss would affect realism. Aretha Franklin, without question, could do justice vocally and overall.

  • @tankeia I really wish they would do a movie about her; I just saw a documentary about her life on OVATION which a channel through COMCAST here in Houston I was in tears just watching. She really overcame a lot in her lifetime she was only 60 years old when she left here!!

  • they need a unknown to play her. its not like they would be doing the actual singing anyway. you see how they embarrassed etta james with beyonce singing her classic.

  • u are so right @tankeia

  • THE QUEEN!!!!

  • Alice Ridley - as Mahalia Jackson - just suggesting Thank you for the video you do have. God bless you, saint don't forget - seek the Lord Jesus with your whole heart and you will find Him. Stop playing, get right or get left!!! There is no substitute for a real relationship and committed life with Christ! Peace!!

  • The sheer, electrifying, raw voice of The Immortal Mahalia Jackson totally defies any technological glitches. This performance has all the trappings of what made her famous worldwide via the legendary Apollo Records recordings. "Hallie," as I was corrected by my college instructor, was a great "blues" singer who sang "gospel." However, Hallie's "blues" were white-washed by orchestra leader Percy Faith and A & R honcho Mitch Miller at Columbia for the Christian music market. Thanks for posting.

  • I would like this song never to end....the recording is not in good shape, but Mahalia is electrifying!

  • Queen Latifah would not be great for the role of Mahalia her voice is not that matured. It should go to those who've been singing gospel as a lifestyle. Tamala Mann should portray her.

  • i think Jennifer Hudson academy award winner, not Queen Latifah would be best for the role in a movie about Mahalia.

  • What a beautiful lady.

  • Thank you! Look at the early episodes of The Parkers. Monique has the look. Queen Latifah would make a great Pearl Bailey, but Monique would make a greater Halie.

  • I like to sing her music, it has such feeling and spirit.

  • G!!! Eddie Robinson is at his best on the piano. He compliments Mahalia like a glove fits a hand. This was the Mahalia style of the 60's. Unlike the honky-tonk blues playing of the 40's and 50's, I might add, we did enjoy, this is Mahalia RAW Excellent Footage in a church, with the call and response field song reciprocation between Mahalia and the congregation. She sounds in Excellent voice and he connection to the people unmatchable. Spiritual connection!

  • She looks the same from the "How I got Over" video,

    But she sounds different,

    Actually better

  • Praise Be!....Thank you Lord.......

  • Noone can sing like her.Noone ever will.

  • Lead: Said I wasn't gonna tell anybody, Choir: couldn't keep, couldnt keep it to myself. Lead: Said I wasn't gonna tell anybody, Choir: couldnt keep it to myself. (repeat twice) What the Lord has done for me Verse: You were not there when He saved my soul. You were not there when He made me whole All: He put joy down in my soul T
  • QUEEN OF GOSPEL END OF STORY!!

  • absolutely!!!

  • Such beauty...such Truth walk this earth...

  • They should do a movie about her. Queen Latifah would be great for the role.

  • "tankeia", I whole-heartely agree with you!!!! In fact, that is an excellent idea! You should write it to someone, seriously!!!!!!

  • I agree! Queen Latifah would be awesome .....to play the queen of gospel!

This white boy would get strange looks from the blk kids....wondering if I was ok...... while to listening the great singer of gospel Mahalia Jackson. Can't wait for the movie..... " I Feel like shouting....!

  • @supremes1964 Go ahead and shout!!! Gospel music is for ALL people because it tells the story of what God has done in a believer's life. Are you a believer? I think you are. They laughed at Jesus Christ too..But guess who is going to get the Glory in the end!!! You got it!!! Be Blessed! :)

  • ...or Jennifer Hudson.

  • no - latifah cant sing like this. maybe jill scott if you are going for a non-gospel singer. I would go for lashun pace or some1 like that.

  • @bemaniac2 They can just have the singer lip sing like they did with Tina Turner.

  • @tankeia I don't agree tankeia latifah is gay , ms jackson was a GODLY woman, jill scott or jennifer hudson would do better.

  • @TjmMinistries u know who would really pass for her? Monique. She looks so much like her. She got the hair line and everything.

  • @liljostens91 , who ever played her in a role no one can sing like here, not even aretha franklin.

  • @TjmMinistries true true. many have tried though. he he glory.

  • @TjmMinistries , maybe if she sung Mahalia's songs enough the conviction would get her. but somebody with a great voice would have to do Mahalia. Whoo first time I have heard this song. had to stop typing and get happy there!! Oh Lord, it took me back to the days in the little Church when I was a little girl and it would smell soooo goood, I thought it was perfume the ladies were wearing but it was the Holy Spirit and I can't imagine how divine it would smell while listening to Mahalia sing!!l

  • @tankeia no...Kelly Price would be perfect for the role!

  • @tankeia How funny..that same thought occurred to me a couple of weeks ago. Queen Latifah would be perfect!

  • @tankeia I was thinking the same but Sis. Mahalia's family probably wouldn't allow it b/c of Dana's lifestyle among other issues. This woman was very spiritual and the actress to portray her should possess the same character. imo.

  • @tankeia i kno das rite

  • @tankeia

Queen Latifah might be built similar to Mahalia Jackson, but I suspect that in light of some of the gritty roles Latifah's played in the movies, she's typecast herself, and consequently could not inject the spiritual quality you feel at the heart of Mahaliah's performances. I think Fantasia, who at least has a church background, would be a better choice to play Ms. Jackson.

  • @tankeia No she wouldn't be good for the role.

  • thank you for the video, as long as i can hear sister mahalia i'm happy.

  • What video does this come from? Someone HAS to remaster and preserve this. Spirit rarely indwells someone this completely.

  • 1963 At what is I believe is called Temple Baptist in the Bronx...

  • @1joker88 : Bethel Temple, Bronx, NY...much love to you fellow fan...LOL

  • Thanks!

  • @1joker88 There is only one person that sings just like Mahalia Jackson and its a guy named Joshua Nelson

  • @tikkunsoulam

Isn't that who you've claimed to be more than once?...

  • I am always amazed at how today's gospel singers all SCREAM into a mic that's already turned up to high to give the effect of power but you always notice(d) Ms. Jackson stood away from the mic or sang without it and her voice was potent, powerful, pristine and it seemed effortless. AMAZING!!!

  • The reason for the screaming is that they have no range, and don't know how to use what they have been blessed with. Mother Mahalia, knew how to build a song and than brake it down. Sreaming through an already loud mike butchers the song/melody to the Lord.

  • I couldn't keep it to myself either :)

  • Wow! Powerful and beautiful!

  • great Mahalia!!!!now, she singing for the God...grazie Mahalia..simona to Venice

  • I never liked this song growing up in church cuz nobody really sung it right-but this was verrrrrry good. Love Ms. Mahalia

  • Well, the problem with church folks singing (especially Mahalia's) songs, they don't practice and than want to get up and think they can sing Mahalia songs. Mahalia, herself had to practice, she didn't get that good just like that.

To get good, you have to work @ your craft/gift of singing. You can't minister to the people if you don't allow yourself to be ministered to.

  • I agree.

  • awesome point and well put

  • I have to agree with this statement.... Singing is the same as playing sports. You have to learn how to work and control your muscles in your abdomen and lungs for the breath support. You got shout with breathless ease as the Queen Mahalia did..... watch and learn.

  • I'm watching this in the public library and I'm about to holla in here. The spirit is high on this. Can you imagine how powerful this woman was still alive it's true you don't appreciate a gift until it dead and gone. What a legend.

  • she WAS appreciated while she was alive, fortunately.

  • Amen to that.

  • She counted presidents, kings, queens and major social and cultural leaders around the world among her friends. She was a protege of Dr. King -- in fact, she brought him from Atlanta to Chicago - her city - and transformed the Civil Rights Movement, also known as 'The Cause', from fragmented regional movements into a national one.

  • The Greatest singer the earth has had for 3000 years

  • yess this woman was blessed of the greatest gift for bringin joy in our life when she sings we can forget our sorrows i know she look down at us from heaven.. thus we can ask her to pray for .. she is the patron of the singers u can call her for helping u with ur singin talents yess its better u burn a long white candle for here with some glass of water and pray and ask her for helping u by the power of god.. amen ..........blessed be she come through for us yess ...

  • I know what you're saying. I agree, and I ask her to watch over me. When my father died in 1961, I was only nine years old. He died in front of me, which was a horrible shock to a kid. I was devastated for years, but I would watch Miss Jackson on TV and get so much comfort. I still owe Mahalia a debt of gratitude for filling in that awful empty space in my youth. I love her so, and I know Dad is with her now. They are real.

  • I love Mahila Jackson she is my favorite singer in the world because she reminds me of my grandmother that belong to a baptsit church but she love to sing like miss mahila jackson I went to chicgo and tried to find he home but nobody could tell me she is my role model made me start singing those old songs to

  • Awesome! I hadn't seen this one before. Mahalia Jackson never disappointed though! Thanks for sharing another great inspiration.

  • I can truly relate to this song. I always want to tell about the wonderful things God has done for me. I am a living testimony of the Living God and I love Him so much. Thank you Jesus.

  • I love this song!

  • I just love when she starts ablibing

  • This is most exellent!!!!!!~!!!!!!~!!!~!!!!!!!!

  • INDEED!

  • she DID that!

  • She was in rare form this night!

Looks like the same night as the live recording How i got Over.

  • I love ghow when she performs, it's so evident that God is directing her every move, sound, expression. She will always be the best

  • véry best mahalia . . .i love !

  • you better sing it .......

you're the best i love you

  • Do you believe that she LOVED the singing of blues empress Bessie Smith? I believe that Mahalia and Ray, one from the choir loft and the other from blues joint transcended the polarity of the Sacred & Profane. They be rockin'!

  • There is nothing but anoiting all over this performance

  • This is a splendid version and incredible rise in emotion!!! Thank you for making her live again, Taddypoe!

  • Anyone know what happened to "ArchieB9876"

He had a great selection of music on youtube and now its all gone.

  • SUBLIME

  • transcendent

  • praise him he is so worthey miss mahalia jackson you can tell she was feel with the holyghost

  • Say that Ms.Halie!! Say that!!!

  • WONDERFUL. Thank you so much for sharing.

  • As a child I was always riveted to the TV when she came on - and now I remember why. Listen to the timing, the speech-like quality, everything that she does is so natural and unforced and true......and her biggest sounds are NEVER screamed like LaBelle et al. - just onderful full rich sound.

  • Ms. Mildred was not aboot to be oot done! she sashayed right over to the organ and pumped away!

  • Mildred didnt play the organ

  • Then who's playing it? And i believe there's a picture from mid 1950's in a Columbia recording studio with MJ singing and Mildred at an organ...

  • ALRITE NOW!

  • Thank you for sharing Taddypoe - very inspirational and uplifting in these trying times!

  • This song is such a blessing! I just wish this precious woman of God didn't pass away the year before I was born. What an ongoing blessing her music is to us all.

  • i know, I was born in 76 and i was kinda forced on her but now im glad i was.

  • The one thing that sepearates Mahalia from all other Gospel singers and the others, and holds the title of "Queen", a title she rightfully deserves is her multifarious musical nature. Ruth Davis, "a Growler" Marion Williams, " A Hooper" Bessie Griffin " A House Wrecker" Clara Ward "An Entertainer" The Dixie Hummingbirds " Harmonious and Soothing" Marian Anderson "Classical Performer" Mahalia was the emodiment of ALL.

  • Mahalia chooses to sing Major keys in originally written minor notes. This could be an obvious no no in music, but the "Queen" does it, makes it work, and sets a new trend. composed by "Alex Bradford" is arranged in Mahalia's style, by her. Edward Robinson accompanies on piano. It has been said that Mildred Falls was Mahalia's best pianist. Mildred was great for the 50's but Eddie Robinson/Charles Clency Gwen Cooper, help change the Gospel sound to what you see here. "READY TO SHOUT" Version.

  • Mildred Falls played in this same concert.

  • I would add she also had ALbertina Walkers "sincerity" and Dorothy Love Coates "fire"!!

  • On;y thing missing was Sister Rosettas instrumental ability

  • NOT

  • She was able to cross over to a white audience for the others, and in the process set the standard

  • When I listen to this I realize Mahalia really would have made a phenomenal Blues Singer... Glory be to God she stuck it out with the Saints...

  • Nothing but excellence, the way she sings gospel is 2nd to none. Mahalia had a real relationship with our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, you can hear it in her singing. She was/is the best gospel singer.

  • Yea, how do you know? The devil named Lucifer was singer in choir... Anyone (I am sure some people can sing good) can sing good. Only God knows if they have relationship with God. It has nothing to do with "real." ...still don't judge others...why comparing her to other gospel singers..they did a good job singing for the Lord..no need for comparison...

  • I'm not judgeing other singers, this is just my personal opinion. My late mother use to listen to Mahalia sing. This just my experience growing up. I enjoy listening to Mahalia Jackson sing. There are alot a gospel singers that can really sing, I just like listening to the songs of yesterday. And some of today.

  • There are some blues singers that are saints...Aretha Franklin also sang gospel. You cannot judge others.....besides there is nothing wrong with singing about what you are experiencing in life. God made man and woman...

  • I never said that Aretha Franklin couldn't sing, that she can do, so could Clara Ward, Shirley Caesar, James Cleveland and a whole lot of others. Mahalia's music is what shaped and molded me as I grew up.I just hear the anoiting in her singing. I don't know everything, but I do know and hear the blessings of the Lord in her singing. Mahalia sings about it in her songs, I do know that.

Those songs that were song by Mahalia and other great singers are the stamp of life to me.

  • Now thats from the heart baby -

  • I wasn't gonna tell nobody the Lord is to good to me I can't keep to myself Hallelujah

  • This particular church concert has many songs I've seen/heard from many sources. Is there a video compilation of the total thing somewhere in the universe?

  • Eddie Robinson is on the piano. He and Mildred Falls must have switched instruments on this song...

  • You know, she really does take you on a journey. And although the jouney is full of her signature sound, the path seems different each time.

  • never ever heard a voice that great in 49 yrs

every song is like a journey just incredible

theres needs to be a movie about her. queen latiffa

    would be perfect

  • Hi there, there is a company right now looking for financing to create a movie about Mahalia starring "Queen Latifah" If you know of someone that would be interested let me know. I am a personal friend of Edward Robinson, the gentleman playing the piano on this video.

  • this is a pretty song

  • I was 8 years old and remembers the day Mahalia Jackson was called HOME! THANK GOD FOR MAHALIA JACKSON her music will live forever! LOVE her version of "HOW I GOT OVER.....all time favorite"

  • yes that was a beautiful number

  • Who was the pianist ??

  • The gospel music today barely mentions the name of the Lord Jesus, speaks of the power of the Blood, or mentions Calvary. We need to get back to the basic. This woman represents gospel at its best. Not only was she a great singer, but more importantly a God fearing spiritual woman that maintain her convictions. I grew up listening to Ms M Jackson's music and will die singing it.

  • Smoooooooth....with a "V." Ne Plus Ultra

  • You know it's funny...many fans of Golden Age Gospel music then and now...have had arguments about who truly was the Greatest Gospel Singer...but you have to it to Mahalia...she didn't sound or sing like anyone else...before, with or after her. She had a way of wringing the emotion out of song without even overdoing it like some of her peers did...or some of the singers in her wake continue to do today. Can I get a witness?

  • Amen, she is and will always be the greatest

  • She had a raw emotion that I just don't see in younger singers today, I know many site her influence but I wonder how many of today's singer have really been through something, look at Mahalia's life and you can understand her songs and vocal power

  • Amen! Thats what Holy Boldness that comes from Jesus and Jesus alone!! Give me a Mahalia Jackson, Ruth Davis, Dorothy Love Coates, or Albertina Walker anyday!

  • She was truly blessed with song and spirit

  • I was shouting at my computer listening to this. I wish I could have seen her live.

  • GLORY !! Iam enjoying these tapes. Keep them coming. montellia60

  • how can i get a copy of this?

  • Thank you for this photage! I have waited to see this concert! Please keep the songs coming! Including " Move On Up A Little Higher"!.
