This guy was considered a legit tough guy in the real world.Make no mistake about it if a man can knock you out with a hand slap you dont get on the wrong side of him and you didnt get on the wrong side of Rude. Both Heenan and Rude were a great combo I dont know why Rude hated and had so much heat with Bobby. He did alot of good for his career.
i was just thinking earlier Summerslam has had some damn could challengers for the WWF Title even if they never won it in their careers Rick Rude obviously from this video but also Owen Hart Lex Luger Vader u know the deal RIP Rick Rude
Rude was considered the strongest pound for pound in the locker room. was also an arm wrestling champion and knocked a man unconscious with an open hand slap. Badass!
@spagisis Davey Boy was always hampered by back problems. Besides, you can't just go by build. I saw some 165lbs. thin Armenian guy rep 315lbs. while I spotted him for 5 reps.
I don't understand why people would doubt that Rude lifted those weights. 405lbs. is very doable for a person that weighs over 230lbs. and works out constantly. Rude was on roids, but he was also a very determined individual. Everyone that knew him said that he trained his butt off in the gym. I've seen a guy lift 6 wheels on each side, and for several reps. Just cause you can only bench 185 doesn't mean everyone else out there can't lift more weight.
no chance he would ever be wwf champion. he would be wwe champion at least 4 times by now, but titles werent handed out to every back then. he was a heel that contested for the title, but would never win it, just like a whole bunch of other guys. that was the way that era worked
@radicalman33 i think you misunderstood. i always thought he was extremely charismatic, as well as an excellent wrestler, but he didnt have the pure bulk that hogan and warrior did. i felt that his lack of bulk was the only thing keeping him from being the champion for a year or 2 at some point.
i understand what you mean by the bulk. but his lack of a world title win in the wwf was not because of that, it was purely because of the era he wrestled in. the wwf title in that era was held by faces. heels only held the title to let another face win the belt ie slaughter. rude played his character perfectly. he was meant to be hated and to challenge for the world title, but only lose to the superstar. plus he carried warrior in the ring. rude today would be 5x champ
@radicalman33 you make a good point about the face part, and the idea hed be a champ today, but i still believe if he had an extra 25 pounds on him, he woulda got at least SOME time as champ, heel or not. guess we'll never know. we can both agree that he was one of the best of his time. i loved to hate him.
i think his shot at the world title would have came if he was still with the wwf in 1991, and the Persian Gulf war wasnt going on. He could have defeated the warrior with the help of macho king instead slaughter at RR (i was there!) then hogan could have defeated rude while warrior took on macho king at WM7. they would have had to work a rude/hogan angle instead of the bossman feud that he started along with the heenan family.
Roids or not you're still working ur ass off regardless..Roids aren't miracle performing drugs they don't do that much for a person. You still have to train super hard, eat properly etc...He was lifting that all by himself it takes phenomenal strength, endurance, skill and power whether ur on roids or not.
@28dukenukem Right, I hate when people see a big dude and just say steroids. Steiner is a perfect example, to get those peaks he had in WCW, Scott Steiner was doing major major training in the gym. People think you take steroids and go to sleep.
probably two real plates on each side, and two training plates. We had them in high school, the are the same shape, and size of a 45lb plate, but plastic. Maybe 10 lbs or so. He was juiced, but no way he's repping out 405 like that.
Rude was a beast all the time!! It's amazing he never got to be a WWF heavy weight Champ, When you see guys like The MIZ, and Alberto Del Rio as champs (Im not knocking these guys) how did it not happen?
Rude was awesome, an in ring general, but he told a story everytime, he was just like Curt Hennig, both sadly missed!!
@iMickeyT I agree totally. Rick Rude, Jake Roberts and Curt Henning should have had a run with the title. I guess in those days the title holders had longer reigns....these days we have more transitional champions like Great Khali etc..
@themax316 No the reason they didn't was simple: They couldn't sell out arenas like Hogan. The whole point of having a great money-maker like Hogan is to send your best heels against him as "the next big threat" to the title and have Hogan sell the threat as legit. The fans love it, Hogan gets paid and the heel gets paid ridicuolous sums of money and everyone is happy. Titles mean NOTHING to the actual old school cats because belts weren't putting dough in their pockets.
@RAV52 I totally see your point....Sometimes when a heel is given the title; it gives them more heat and it gives the face more reason to exact revenge and get the title back. I'm curious to know since you clearly have a good grasp of wrestling psychology... what are your views on the current WWE product and how the booking is done?
@themax316 The belts switch hands so much nowadays that it's hard for the fans to really latch on to a favorite and stay with them. The significance of the belts with the FANS has dwindled over the years because of this. Remember, back in the day, winning the Intercontinental Belt was a MAJOR accomplishment in the eyes of the fans. Now it's barely acknowledged. Mark Henry wears the belt that Ric Flair made famous and I barely give a damn. Reigns and storylines should last longer to enhance worth.
I was really looking forward to Rude's heel vs. heel World Title match against Vader @ Slamboree 1994. It's too bad Rude got injured. I wonder what would have happened in that match.
Rick Rude would own Dorian Yates. Yates could hardly move due to all the steroids in his body. I'd take Rude's physique over Yates anyday of the week.
No wonder he died of heart attack. Rick was one of the biggest stars of WWF as many of these wrestlers (performers) are put under tremendous pressure - to die at an early age either by heart attack (Rude, Br. Bulldog, etc) or drugs (Mr Perfect, etc).
Perfect was drugs along with steroid use per his Father's comments following his death. So you can group him right next to rude and bulldog without the division.
As soon as Mania 6 was done, they started doing these promos and pushing Rude to the moon as the only guy who could beat Warrior. He trained like nuts all summer, and lost a mediocre and forgettable cage match at Summerslam 90. Looking back, Rude had no reason to stick around in the WWF. Fans weren't buying into the ppv like Vince wanted so they billed the double main event.
As soon as the ppv was over, Rude starts talking shit about Boss Mans mom and is sent into a feud with him. Rude was supposed to be on the Natural Disasters team at the 1990 Survivor Series, but Jack Tunney "suspended him indefinately" for talking smack about Boss Mans mom. Possibly the lamest way to be kicked out of a wrestling promotion storywise.
Rude got over huge in WCW, but being WCW they fucked up the whole Dangerous Alliance angle then Rude wound up getting injured and things just went further south to the end. Rude challenged Warrior for the world title on SNME weeks before Summerslam, and he lost rather cleanly. I consider that a boneheaded booking decision when you spend months pushing the guy and trying to build hype that he will take the belt at the ppv.
Then you have him lose on your big free show to the champ like that. I heard that Rude was originally supposed to win the title at SNME, and let Warrior get it back at Summerslam but the rumour was that Warrior wigged out like the selfish prick that the smarks call him and wouldn't budge on the idea.
@guardian08527 Overall total fuck up on the bookers handling of the storyline. You start pushing the only guy to pin the invincibile babyface champ who beat Hulk Hogan for the title clean in Hogans only clean title loss at the time, then you have him lose to the new super babyface on free tv and this is supposed to make people buy the ppv? Like I mentioned earlier, as soon as it was over Rude starts feuding with Boss Man for no reason and all that animosity for Warrior is gone.
@guardian08527 Im not broken up over Rude never being world champ, he was Intercontinental champ back in the era when if you had ANY of the three belts, you were god. But he went to WCW and got over as a mega heel and won the US title there and then got stuck fighting for the Int title BS. People should look at his match with Steamboat from SuperBrawl 2, he tried doing his entrance speech and got booed out of the building like never before. Then had a 4 star match with The Dragon. Great ppv.
One of my absolute favorite superstars..Rude never was really given the chance to flourish by the WWF. Great in the ring and on the mic. Damn, he was good! Sucks he died so young.
@msaint41 Your right. He was a terrific worker, and he really carried the Ultimate Warrior during their contests, trying his best to make sure Mcmahon's new star didn't look bad. Legends like Bret always acknowledge what an effective and talented performer he was. It's a shame he never reached the top of the card, he deserved it. My thinking is that his gimmick limited him to the mid card. For sure if he was booked in title matches I would have backed him to win.
@msaint41 I think if you have a gimmick like Rude's "Sexiest man alive" gimmick, it limits you to the midcard. Look at Dolph Zigler. The guy has so much talent and technical ability, and has already proven so many wrong with impressive wins over: Kane, R Truth etc. I just think if he eventually gets rid of his own prettyboy gimmick the WWE might book him in a world title match and give him that chance.
Oh yeah, the "Heartbreak kid" never made it past midcard.
More like Rude was in the 80's when no one would take him seriously against bone-crushers like Hogan or Andre, while the 90's was the "Altitude/Attitude era" where suck-ass was a way of life, as Vince took wrestling in a "new direction--" DOWN.
wrong....dorian yates INCLINED MORE THAN THAT.....DORIAN INCLINED 415...FOR REPS....I HAVE HIS WORK OUT TAPE....CALLED BLOOD AND GUTS....AWESOME VIDEO..... BUT THOSE WEIGHTS ARE DEF REAL THAT RICK RUDE IS BENCHING... HE WAS VERY, VERY STRONG FOR A GUY WHO WAS AS LEAN AS HE WAS.....R.I.P....RICK YOU WERE GREAT!!!
Usually when they do weight lifting promos or scenes in movies, two of the plates are real and the rest are fake. Probably 2 were real, If so he was only lifting 215.
@PhilM662 Yes they could do 600ls FOR ONE REP! Check the Rep to Max chart. If you can do 405 for 5reps your max would be roughly 550 or more. Rick Rude is strong but hes not benching 550lbs...Im sorry
@spagisis I don't follow those charts. That's insane to think that you could do what that chart states, as 550lbs. is literally 145lbs. more than what he was doing for 5 reps. When I use to lift I would focus on high reps, and bench 225lbs. for 14 reps. I did 295lbs. 3 times, plus one with an assist.
@rodthegreat08 It more than likely was real. Dorian Yates wouldn't even do a flat bench press, he would only do incline & decline........Also, there were a few pro wrestlers who could bench 500.
I work out with 360, myself, and I'm nowhere near as big as Dorian Yates.
Kevin Nash talks about Rude in one of his shoot interviews. He said that he,Rude & Big Sexy(Nash's tag team partner when he was Vinne Vegas) were at a gas station & some unruly fans were harassing a lady.Nash said that when he & Big Sky got out of the car,Rude laid the guys out with open hand slaps.Everybody says Taker has one of the best open hand slaps but it was known that Rude slapped guys so hard they either were knocked out or shedded a tear
Not the strongest of men could bench press 405 so easily with impeccable form and so little rest between sets. There are definitely some fake plates on there!
No doubt that rude could bench 405/5. However, those are fake plates. Benching that weight takes all your concentration and he obviously is not that focused. If he has the energy to cut a promo in between sets, thats a tell-tale that its fake. Besides, nobody benches that kind of weight without a spotter; its too risky. And no, I'm not just some random shit talker; I've benched 405/8 before. I currently have a 1 RM of around 415 (took time off due to a car wreck). Best 1 RM of 525.
I loved rude. In my opinion he was one of the all time best heels. When he used to wrestle the crowd used to get so pissed at him.
Back in the day when he left WWF for WCW I heard he left WWF (Right before wrestlemania 7) on very bad terms. From what I heard he left WWF cursing at Vince so badly that he probally never would return...anyone know if there is any truth to that?
I knew Rick Personally, He was a mans man...A legitimate bad ass and all the boys in the locker room knew it..I was a young wrestler breaking in and worked as a bouncer at a strip club ..Rick and I became good friends and once hell broke loose and I was outnumbered 3 to 1 and Rick jumped up and told them to leave or it would get ugly..They left without incident , but I will always remember him backing me up when he didn't have to.. Man I miss him..Great guy.
@okrabay Actually he was a devoted husband who never cheated on his wife. He was a family man who was well liked by the other wrestlers and was as kind as could be in real life. Everything Rude did on screen was character, he was nothing like that.
Bret Hart even talked about him in his book. Hart was the one who slept with many women and cheated on his wife, while Rude taped over his wedding ring during matches. He never cheated.
Ok, rewriting history.... Rude beats warrior for the title at summerslam 90. Rude then on opposing team of Hogan at survivor series and hogan gets a the pin on rude. Hogan then gloats about pinning the champ and demands a title shot... Jack tunney decides if Hogan wins the rumble he goes to wrestlemania to meet rude. Rude faces Warrior at rumble and pins him clean (i know it would take alot to persuade warrior to go for this) then distracts hogan causing him to be eliminated.....
@1981bigdee on tv hogan cries about rude denying him what he deserves and accuses him of dodging him. after a few weeks of rude and hogan bitching back and forth, rude accepts hogans challenge and we build towards wrestlemania 7 where?????? what do you peeps think and what happens at wrestlemania?
@Circusmnkee His form here isn't even for power, that's how one trains for pec size, and the strength from that position is VERY limited, there's absolutely no way that they're real plates, if they were, then if he trained powerlifter-style on bench, he'd be capable of doing 600lbs raw(and being that he was 240~, and the record NOW is 605 for a 240 lifter..no)
It's one thing when an 8-year old in 1989 believed it. It's another thing when grown adults swear of its truth some 20 + years later.
@NWpowerhouse85 Ok so he did what 5 reps there? I've seen guys not nearly his size and shape bench 350 for reps. But lets say they are fake plates, after all they very well could be. By your estimation how much weight could a guy who has the size and muscle mass of Rude, he was roughly 6'3 240-250, bench for 5 reps?
@Circusmnkee It's not whether or not he can bench 405/5, it's a matter of him being capable of benching it with that form, that's bodybuilding form, develops muscle shape, which takes a lot of leverage and power out of the movement, if he benched it like a competitive powerlifter, him repping 405 is feasible. I'd say that he may be capable of 315/5 like this, which is hardly shabby.
P.S. My initial comment came off as harsh, wasn't directed at YOU, just ppl in general that I've encountered.
@NWpowerhouse85 ah no worries man. We all have our opinions and civilized people can "agree to disagree" or disagree without being disagreable. But talking about benching, hell I'd be lucky to bench my bodyweight of 210 lol. I really doubt I could, wouldn't try without a spotter though. It only takes a split second to get seriously hurt on that movement.
WTF? I remember watching this promo as a kid but I had no idea till now how much he press in the promo. THAT IS 405 POUNDS? Holy shit the man was a beast.
Rude had to turn face after his loss to the Ultimate Warrior. I mean, all that training Rude put himself through, lost a cage match, and Heenan continues managing him? That is SO not like The Brain.
Dude this is Fucking 405!!!! holy shit I miss Rude so much he is a fucking monster that goes to show he was not a weak ass he had the body and the strength and he was a form amatuer boxer Rip Rude

For sure if he was booked in title matches I would have backed him to win.
bpatrice49 9 months ago
@msaint41 I think if you have a gimmick like Rude's "Sexiest man alive" gimmick, it limits you to the midcard. Look at Dolph Zigler. The guy has so much talent and technical ability, and has already proven so many wrong with impressive wins over: Kane, R Truth etc. I just think if he eventually gets rid of his own prettyboy gimmick the WWE might book him in a world title match and give him that chance.
bpatrice49 9 months ago
@bpatrice49

Who the hell is Dorian Yates? That was only about 400 on the bar.
Ted Arcidi could do over 700. 400 is nothing these days, and Rick Rude was on more steroids than a cattle-farm.
He also had skinny stick-legs.
postalmeter 9 months ago
@rodthegreat08 have you SEEN Rick Rude? lol Even if it was assisted by roids, he was benching every bit of that 405.
RoxStare 8 months ago 35
@RoxStare I say he did it shit am 205 can do 305 4 times easy
eurkzilla2 8 months ago
@RoxStare I dont think so dude! 405 for 5reps? at the time the world record for 1 rep was under 600ls
spagisis 3 months ago
@spagisis Judging by the audio, it's obvious that he's lifting it with his Satanic powers.
Dynaman21 3 months ago
@spagisis that's a lie, bill kazmaier and others were doing over 600 by the early 80s. I totally believe rude can knock out 405
PhilM662 2 months ago
@PhilM662 Yes they could do 600ls FOR ONE REP! Check the Rep to Max chart. If you can do 405 for 5reps your max would be roughly 550 or more. Rick Rude is strong but hes not benching 550lbs...Im sorry
spagisis 1 month ago
@spagisis I don't follow those charts. That's insane to think that you could do what that chart states, as 550lbs. is literally 145lbs. more than what he was doing for 5 reps. When I use to lift I would focus on high reps, and bench 225lbs. for 14 reps. I did 295lbs. 3 times, plus one with an assist.
BobsWS61 1 month ago
@RoxStare that is your opinion i was 18 natural benching the same its not always steroids.
k1ngdragon411 3 weeks ago

25Robbo25 1 year ago
no bend in the bar no bow nothing. was more like 225! nobody lifts their head off the bench while pressing
dirtrider169 1 year ago

Man I miss him..Great guy.

Rude fucked soooooo many women back in the day.
okrabay 1 year ago
@okrabay Actually he was a devoted husband who never cheated on his wife. He was a family man who was well liked by the other wrestlers and was as kind as could be in real life. Everything Rude did on screen was character, he was nothing like that.
Bret Hart even talked about him in his book. Hart was the one who slept with many women and cheated on his wife, while Rude taped over his wedding ring during matches. He never cheated.

Rick Rude was such a Man, when asked if he wanted a spotter while be benched. He said "Only pussies need those."
jpd782 1 year ago
Ok, rewriting history.... Rude beats warrior for the title at summerslam 90. Rude then on opposing team of Hogan at survivor series and hogan gets a the pin on rude. Hogan then gloats about pinning the champ and demands a title shot... Jack tunney decides if Hogan wins the rumble he goes to wrestlemania to meet rude. Rude faces Warrior at rumble and pins him clean (i know it would take alot to persuade warrior to go for this) then distracts hogan causing him to be eliminated.....
1981bigdee 1 year ago
@1981bigdee on tv hogan cries about rude denying him what he deserves and accuses him of dodging him. after a few weeks of rude and hogan bitching back and forth, rude accepts hogans challenge and we build towards wrestlemania 7 where?????? what do you peeps think and what happens at wrestlemania?
1981bigdee 1 year ago
For all the people calling "fake plates" I've seen kids in the gym who are no where near Rude's size pushing 350 and 375 for a few reps.
Circusmnkee 1 year ago
@Circusmnkee His form here isn't even for power, that's how one trains for pec size, and the strength from that position is VERY limited, there's absolutely no way that they're real plates, if they were, then if he trained powerlifter-style on bench, he'd be capable of doing 600lbs raw(and being that he was 240~, and the record NOW is 605 for a 240 lifter..no)
It's one thing when an 8-year old in 1989 believed it. It's another thing when grown adults swear of its truth some 20 + years later.
NWpowerhouse85 1 year ago
@NWpowerhouse85 Ok so he did what 5 reps there? I've seen guys not nearly his size and shape bench 350 for reps. But lets say they are fake plates, after all they very well could be. By your estimation how much weight could a guy who has the size and muscle mass of Rude, he was roughly 6'3 240-250, bench for 5 reps?
Circusmnkee 1 year ago
@Circusmnkee It's not whether or not he can bench 405/5, it's a matter of him being capable of benching it with that form, that's bodybuilding form, develops muscle shape, which takes a lot of leverage and power out of the movement, if he benched it like a competitive powerlifter, him repping 405 is feasible. I'd say that he may be capable of 315/5 like this, which is hardly shabby.
P.S. My initial comment came off as harsh, wasn't directed at YOU, just ppl in general that I've encountered.
NWpowerhouse85 1 year ago
@NWpowerhouse85 ah no worries man. We all have our opinions and civilized people can "agree to disagree" or disagree without being disagreable. But talking about benching, hell I'd be lucky to bench my bodyweight of 210 lol. I really doubt I could, wouldn't try without a spotter though. It only takes a split second to get seriously hurt on that movement.
