Hi G. Your vid is a great help. I've an NYC Muff from new in '07 & have been disappointed with the tone as I was trying to get the comfortably numb sound. After watching loads of vids on youtube and reading pages of pages of modding tips - lots of conflicting advice abounds, I decided to get in 4 NOS 2n5233's by national semiconductor. WOW what a difference. Thinner tone, not to the liking of metal merchants etc. but closer to the Ram's Head muff than any of the other muffs on your video. Thanks
Nice Demo., it gives a great impression how this differents muffs sounds! great job blondegreamey! Its very interesting. I like the big muff very much and i'm very interesting about the history!
I like the Big Muff Pi Version 3 the best. It is a transistor version that came after the Rams Head with a little more beef. You should get one.. I should too. ;)
haha...i bet you thought no one would catch the radiohead tease at the end didn't ya? great vid, thx, just got a big muff pi today. can't wait to try it out in front of my jcm900
I hated the big muff , only because there were not too many other options back in my jamming days so I was kinda stuck with it and a fender bandmaster head thru a home made cab. I also used the lbpt-1 just to try and get some real overdrive, but it still sucked....lol( now everybody wants one)
@HackerGuitarist me too i had one from the 70's and it sounded horrid in a good way i bought it for 15 bucks used (big money then! ) wish i still had it lol
I had put a tone bypass switch in my Little Big Muff Pi pedal, but it had broke. So I have to by a new 3 way switch and some plaster or something that will hide the hole where the switch was.
However... what I do dislike about most of these "comparisons" is that we never get to hear a "before and after" sound before the stomp button is hit, with the same amp settings, so as to get a REAL comparison!
Very cool demo. Which one did you get first and which muff is your favorite? Whats next for your muff collection? My dad knows very little about guitars...much less pedals, but he really enjoyed your watkins copycat demo.
big muffs sound great with an EQ pedal after them, you can slightly roll the bass off and add a little mids to get awesome bbw muff tone! Where did you get RED panasonic batteries? they are blue here in the states
I'm not sure where else to post this, but I'm sure some tech geek can answer for me. In White Stripes songs, does Jack White play with the Big Muff on the whole time, or is this what he turns on for solos? I'm trying to get a Jack White sound, and I'm using an Epiphone SG remake, an Epiphone Valve Jr., and a Digitech RP 250. I'm more concerned with making the chorus parts sound crunchier than the solos. Do I need a new pedal, a new amp, or both?
@foofighter1337 I've been in your position before. Look it up on google. It worked for me after awhile. Just look up "Jack White gear" or "setup" or "pedalboard"
@mikolene97 Yeah, I'm familiar with what gear he uses, but I'm trying to determine if that crunchy sound in tracks like "Fell in Love With a Girl" and "Hypnotize" comes mostly from the amp or from the pedals.
that 1980 big muff sounds awesome, get someone to look at the noise on that maybe (fresh soldering? i dunno, im not an electrician) and itd be awesome
just so you guys know, if you want the vintage muff sound, but you don't wanna pay a crap load of money, build your own clone (BYOC) makes triange and rams head muff clones and they sound almost exactly the same for a little more than an NYC muff. You have to build it, but it's SUPER EASY and comes with a free practice kit
or you could shell out an extra $30 for a pre-built one
I think that the USSR one sounds the least like a big muff, If you judge by what they're supposed to sound like, that being the rams head and triangle.
ok thanks and what pedal do you recommend for me that will provide me with pure fuzzyness without the distortion that also has the option to change from bright to warm and etc..
yeah, which big muff is that? I remember my friend having a brand new big muff unit somewhere in 2003 and it was a totally apocalyptic fuzz pedal. you got pingy sounds insted of muted distortion when palm muting - dunno how to explain it better. he sold it shortly and doesn't remember. came in a big military-like wooden box with green army letters and it was full of hay. truly retro :)
@vazkilzan turn your amp all the way up and use a tube screamer or an overdrive pedal with the drive turn all the way down...that should be pretty fuzzy
Electro-Harmonix themselves tend to describe it more as a "Distortion/Sustainer" than a Fuzz pedal. It's very much it's own thing, and I love my NYC reissue. I'd kill for a vintage Triangle or Ram's Head Muff though.
At the end he should have turned them ALL on. Now that would have been the biggest Muff of all!
Also, the shoot out was not really fair because he did not move any of the knobs on the earliest "lion's head" (which I own) to show it's various tone colors.
Love the "Big Muff"! I bought mine brand new in 1980 and it was beat up over the years (I drove away with the Muff on the roof of a car one time and it still worked!) Long Live the Big Muff!
Im jelous of this guys gear but I dont get why everyones got such a boner over the white rams head muff, I used to take tone too seriously aswell, then i realized that whoevers hearing it 90% of the time doesnt even know what a big muff is....
