I have a black 4-piece Rogers set. It's AWESOME!!! It was the style that Johnny Cash's drummer played on at Folsom Prison. I'm just gettin em restored, I'll never give them babies up.
well you may be able to help me??? I have 5 star super zyn hat and 15 inch crash(its supposed to be 16) I am afte a ride cymbal but i dont kno hat to get size wise......i bought a 20 " Avedis that too big to me in weight and the 20" seems BIG too. What would you think of getting an 18" crah ride as a ride-too small?
is that a six lugs snare drum? if yes, the sound is as clear as eight lugs snare, good drumming mate, I like the way u hit the drums, anyway I have a 66' Pearl president series drum set which I think that they have same character old sound (in early years they were categorized as 'JAP CRAP' , but today they are hunted by collectors, lol)
I wish there were drummers like you around here I could study with. I have the handle on straight up 4/4 playing, all of which is self taught over a 10+ year period, but i find that reinventing myself from the ground up with jazz and traditional grip, would be much better suited for a teacher/student setting. I'm picking it up, just a lot slower than I would be if I could learn from a teacher. As it stands, all I do is watch videos like this, Buddy Rich, Joe Morello, and pick up what I can.
I have the bottom head tighter than the top.. First I tune the bottom head making sure all sections of the drums (next to each lug) sound the same... then I tune one of the sections at the top to the pitch I want then I tune the remaining sections to the same pitch...
I've found it in a music store in Melbourne.. they've found an old shipment of Zyn 5 when they were relocating to a new warehouse. They are very old cymbals but in BRAND NEW CONDITION.. I've bought a pair of 15" hi-hats, 1 x 20" and 1 x 22"
Yeap.. this kit is just awesome.. the blue sparkle is intense under the spotlight... and the sound is really good.. I was very lucky to get it from the old USA when the Aussie dollar was strong...
As far as drum heads are concerned, I like Evans Genera G2 Coated.(I use them on my "modern" Sonor kit.
My Rogers have Remo Ambassador (the top one on the floor tom is an old Walberg & Auge (Worcester , MA).
melsamba sweet set love the blue sparkle. Nice to see it has the original hardware. I have 60's rogers holday as well. Unfortunately i'm 99% sure they have been revovered as their natural wood finish. Anhow wanted to get your advice on what drum heads to use?
great work . those rogers' sound great. I would consider getting one of these in addition to my Leedy 'Shelly Manne's set. maybe there is little difference?
Thanks jmanhogan... the toms on the old sets are not as firmly attached to the bass drum as the ones today.. but I actually like that as it the drum vibrate hence the great sound..
Thanks mate... I've left it behind on a gig.. but it's now safely back home... I got another one on Ebay (Rogers 1964 hi-hat).. in mint condition but the clutch is almost gone.. so I'm looking for a "new" one on Ebay..
And you're right... once you get one of these beauties, you never let them go..
Great workout, clean and on the money. Got a Rogers 60's Holiday set myself, blue onyx with 2 rack toms. Wouldn't sell it for the world. Wheres your HiHat? I see you left foot moving so I know you can play it.
You make me miss my kit. I had a 1964 Red Onyx finish Holiday series kit best sound ever well at least I still have the powertone snare that came with it and my Dynasonic snare.
hey ive got a kit in black thats the script logo and same set up, same cymbal mount ect. mine is from 9/72 according to one of the shells. any idea what a restored one is pulling?no snare wanting to put it back together and hit up some jazz. Great playing man!
Sorry.. I've got no idea... Any restoration has to be properly done, otherwise you may devaluate the price of the drumkit..
Snare.. there are many choices.. a custom made 60's Rogers Dynasonic is just awesome... a Gretsh round badge or a 50's WFL 14 x 6 1/2 also a good bet... but all boils down to personal taste..
hey there, can you tell me how much the 5 star super zyn cymbals are worth, i have an 18" 5 star crash, i would love to keep it but it is way to loud for my liking so im thinking of selling it but what would be a good price, do you know at all?
Gee.. I wouldn't have a clue.. I believe a 5-star Super Zyn in good condition could be worth a fair bit as it's was top of range. I quite like the ones I have (22". 20" & 15" hats)... I reckon the best bet is to flog it on Ebay with a reserve price (US$200 ??)... it's all a guess as the price will be driven by demand... you could have two Zyn collectors bidding and get much more for it...
i had a kit just like yours... still have a buudy rich kit and a londoner five kit.
check them out if you get a chance.

I would suggest you to get a proper 20" rider rather than use a crash as a rider...

Such a classic sound. I wish I could get my toms to sound that good. I haven't figured it out. What tuning methods do you use?

Thanks! I have a 1977 set. I think that maybe my bearing edges need to be recut. They're really uneven. That might be my tuning problem there.

Hi Ibanez,
I have the original Rogers 1964 metal snare but I use a 1963 round badge Gretsch snare (the one on this video) as I prefer wooden snares.
I'd love to have a matching 14" floor tom... I saw one a few months ago on Ebay and it was sold for a small fortune..
Good onya, mate!!
Cheers!!

Thanks for the reply. I have a old gretsch round badge snare also but the rogers sounds 10 times better. Nice chops by the way
