Apparently Rex is writing a book at the moment, regarding his life and experiences as the bassist of Pantera and Down, according to Metal Hammer. So I guess his views will come there. Strange thing though, as several has commented, that his views on the most pivotal time for Pantera wasn`t included in this docu. Either the journalists didn`t do their job, or he flat out refused to answer, which would have at least been an answer of sorts.
I remember seeing Kat and Vinnie at the end of a HellYeah show.. you can really see that the Dime tragedy really scares him to this day. I remember after the show some dude was waiting for an hour to give Vinnie a demo. Well Vinnie came out to go to the bus and the guy went towards Vinnie.. my goodness security was all over him! It's like security was hiding in the trees and trashcans. The came out of nowhere. But Vinnie showed him love and we all talked for a good 20 minutes. Fucking awesome.

The reason phil didn't get his back fixed immediately was because the road crew and the guys in the band (Vinnie, he just looks like the type) would have been bugging the fuck out of him. A year and a half for recovery I guarentee that in about a month they would have been like okay you got your back fixed lets go back out on tour. Six months: Phil your outta the band your recovery is taking too long

No they probably gave him a shot of Narcon I was dead between 6-7. Narcon supposedly cancels out the Smack in your body but after two shots they took those shockers to my chest. I'm still on the Methadone. I can't imagine being rich like this.Be able to cop as much as want .

why does this documentary make phil look worse than hitler. Its edited pretty well by the producers. Sure he made mistakes but he didnt pull the trigger. I think Phil is a good example of some of the "dangers" with being a die-hard musician. It's the feeling that music is the only thing you can do and you'll be lost when you're not making it. A lot of bands live healthy lifespans taking time off, I'd think most people would welcome a break from band activity. But if you have nothing else going for you, it can go to shit real quick

Maybe some Pantera fan can answer these questions since I don't know much about the band: After Anselmo ODed, did anyone in the band suggest taking that time off so he could get surgery? Another question: Which is more likely - the Abbott brothers not making any attempt to contact Anselmo or Anselmo ignoring them? It seems like Anselmo's the one who had no interest in Pantera. It's not like Pantera recruited another vocalist while Anselmo was working on his other projects.
@Herreken I'm sure the topic came up. But obviously in this video Phil wasn't in favor of taking over a year off to do surgery. And it seems like Dime/Vinnie weren't too keen on the idea of telling him what to do for fear of pissing him off. As for the other stuff, trying to have a rational conversation with a drug addict isn't exactly easy to do so I imagine any attempt to do so turned out somewhat bad.
@theroach10 I've only just started listening to them. So far, I've only listened to Cowboys from Hell and Vulgar Display of Power. I prefer his vocals on Cowboys. I think it's a great mix of actual singing and his later all-out aggressive style. Cemetery Gates is an amazing display of this synthesis.

why does this documentary make phil look worse than hitler. Its edited pretty well by the producers. Sure he made mistakes but he didnt pull the trigger. In my opinion if it wasnt for phil, pantera wouldnt have been as big as they were. THis documentary makes him look like trash its totally unfair. If dimebag hadnt of been shot they would have gotten back together without a doubt and continued to kick ass.

@ryan25n Phil didn't want to undergo back surgery and did heroin instead. I mean, Dime, Rex and Vinnie would have waited for a year but Phil basically split the band by himself. No denying what he did for Pantera but still, they should've kicked him out after he ODed and look for another vocalist.

Pantera basically just shattered, Sepultura effectively kicked Max out after his stepson got murdered, Korn nearly broke up, Nirvana split under tragic circumstances. Bands of the 70s 80s kinda went to shit in the 90s and the 90s bands couldn't cope.

@dcalde78 He's like "It's like tryin' to put a bandaid over cancer." Phil should've gotten the fucking X-ray. He basically broke up Pantera by himself. Dime and Vinnie Paul shoulda kicked him out and brought someone else to be the vocalist, ie Max Cavalera who was one of Dime's buddies.

@RedKnightTheGreat Fuckin' right. Pantera would have waited for him if he'd gone for surgery. He was a coward for not going. He played a massive part in ruining the band, causing the break-up. He should have gone to Dime's funeral, so that Rita could have fucked him up good. He should be gone, not Dime.

@dcalde78 none of them should be gone, neither phil nor dime. it´s not like phil wanted to fuck it all up, it just happened. and yes he should´ve had the surgery, but it´s understandable why he didn´t. he said it himself, he had a job to do. and at least he tried, just because he was famous doesnt mean that his actions were worse than any other addict...

@dcalde78 What's the worst that would have happened if he did go? He'd have to take a year out, so what? Surely taking illegal drugs to deal with the problem made things worse as opposed to making them better. Saying that Phil should be dead not Dime is like saying that Paul McCartney should've been shot by Mark Chapman instead of John Lennon(it's a bad example but still)

I think Phil is a good example of some of the "dangers" with being a die-hard musician. It's the feeling that music is the only thing you can do and you'll be lost when you're not making it. A lot of bands live healthy lifespans taking time off, I'd think most people would welcome a break from band activity. But if you have nothing else going for you, it can go to shit real quick

@classicrock4ev3r Pretty damn sure it's not Pantera. Kind of sounded like A7X guitar tone, but I can't imagine them putting that on there. Maybe check out some Damage Plan songs, might be something from that.

Maybe some Pantera fan can answer these questions since I don't know much about the band: After Anselmo ODed, did anyone in the band suggest taking that time off so he could get surgery? Another question: Which is more likely - the Abbott brothers not making any attempt to contact Anselmo or Anselmo ignoring them? It seems like Anselmo's the one who had no interest in Pantera. It's not like Pantera recruited another vocalist while Anselmo was working on his other projects.

@Herreken I'm sure the topic came up. But obviously in this video Phil wasn't in favor of taking over a year off to do surgery. And it seems like Dime/Vinnie weren't too keen on the idea of telling him what to do for fear of pissing him off. As for the other stuff, trying to have a rational conversation with a drug addict isn't exactly easy to do so I imagine any attempt to do so turned out somewhat bad.

You can't replace Phil Anselmo. I wouldn't listen to any Pantera album that doesn't have Phil as a vocalist or Dimebag as the guitarist.

@theroach10 I've only just started listening to them. So far, I've only listened to Cowboys from Hell and Vulgar Display of Power. I prefer his vocals on Cowboys. I think it's a great mix of actual singing and his later all-out aggressive style. Cemetery Gates is an amazing display of this synthesis.
