  • Best series of videos on this subject, good work! I just tried your design with the 2 rows of staggered holes and it works great. Now I'l have to try this one--did you notice a dramatic improvement with 3 rows of holes as opposed to 2?

  • hiram,

i just have a general question about these woodgas stoves. what are the advantages/disadvantages of having the bottom, rather than the top cut out with a safety can opener? i noticed that the bushbuddy has its bottom intact. thanks!

  • I like your voice; reminds me of a tv program i used to like. the krylon paint is a good tip that i will use; i didn't know it would go to 1200 deg.; gonna put it on my chevy headers, too! using the corn chowder can to save making that hole is sooo much easier, thanks for that, and thanks for a good job on all your videos; you ROCK!!!

  • Charcoal briquets are made with sand when they compress them. This is to slow the burn rate, but it sure leaves a ton of debris.

Try Cowboy Charcoal, or some other natural style charcoal. It leaves far less ash residue.

  • Looks great Hiram.

    I like your improvements.

  • very useful stuff thanks :D

  • Great video as always!! when the music started it was difficult to hear. but, in your video you said you would change the burn chamber. How often does one need to be changed? Thanks Hiram!! 5/5

  • Oops, my bad. I forgot to take out the music. On my earlier wood gas stoves they never burned thru but I think the most I used the one ws maybe 10 or 12 times. They did get pretty flacky from rust though.

  • I have been thinking about what if we make a unit to fit over the whole stove to act as a windscreen and a plate to set on so the pot does not get so much soot on it. Great job on your design! I have been thinking how could one automate the feed of the fire as well... I love wood gas!

  • Wait till you see my next two vids and see what happens with and without the windscreen. Because of the variable size of the fuel I don't think the feed can be automated. Maybe by using wood pellets you could. But there must be an easier way to feed the fuel. Also if soot is a problem you could wrap the pot in aluminum foil.

  • a couple days ago I tried mine and the JB weld crumbled off afterwards. the stove worked ok though and I think today will be good enough to go out and take some pics ... your craftmanship is way superior to mine.

  • I think the wood gas fire gets way to hot for JB weld to handle. So far the press-fit seems to be holding the fire chamber in place. Like I said in the vid, if I have to I can always use a couple of bolts to hold it and still be able to change it out when and if needed. I look forward to seeing the pictures of your stove. As far as my "craftmanship" goes that can be contributed to that I have a drill press to use. It's not easy to line up holes with a hand drill.

  • Very nice Hiram. I am glad you found the paint, hope it helps out, it made a difference with my stoves. Look forward to seeing the burn test and I hope a boil test after.
