Unknown to the U.S., the Soviet field commanders in Cuba had been given authority to launch (the only time such authority was delegated by higher command). They had 20 nuclear warheads for medium-range ballistic missiles capable of reaching U.S. cities (including Washington). If Soviet officers had launched them, millions of U.S. citizens would have been killed. The U.S. strike would have killed roughly 100 million Soviet citizens. Kennedy refused LeMay's requests.

@hpup82 NO, Japan, Germany, Italy are countries that attempted to establish empires. In case you missed it, the prime minister at the 65th anniversary of the end of WW II for the first time apologized to 1) Korea, and 2) China for their horrific treatment of those countries before and during the war. If you want to compare Tojo, Hitler and Mussolini to FDR and Churchill, you only add reasons to believe you're out of your mind.

I wonder with all this publically owned and paid for opulence how the average Russian person lives in the larger cities?
The per capita GDP of russia is $16,000 similar to Mexico. Half what it is in European countries and 1/3 that of the USA. The art, the fountains and the kickass train system are wonderful for visitors but the visitors don't have to pay for it.
