  • I cry every time in this scene. I'm an addict, and I've tried so many times to rise above this. This scene is heart breaking for me.

  • That look on his face... it gets me every time.

  • The music is just so perfect.

  • DId anyone else feel like the entire scene was set up for Drey? I thought that when Mr. Dunne went to confront Frank and they had a drink that they came to a consensus that Drey needs to stay away from that shit. Go back to earlier in the film when Drey asks Mr. Dunne if she could end up like her brother. In the motel room, he glances and nods to the stripper smoking crack, looks back at Drey and nods(as if to say that could be you). Then there was Frank's subdued reaction in the car. Amazing

  • @zacenroe I think you make a good point. However, at the end of the movie you see Drey riding her bike out of school and Frank tries to talk to her. But she rides away. It wouldn't make sense that Frank and Dan collaborated this if Frank was still trying to talk to her

  • @zacenroe I did not get the feeling that Dan and Frank came to a consensus at all. It seems like Dan just gives up and says, "I don't know what's best." He's depressed and completely lost.

When Dan glances at the woman smoking crack, I think it's just to say, "Yep, that's crack. That's what I'm doing here." And then he hands out a dollar bills, because that crack is for him too. He's not warning her -- he's resigned to being incapable of guiding her anywhere.

  • @zacenroe Regarding Frank, he's subdued because he saw the way Drey must have walked out of the motel and over to the car. After the first job, she came running and smiling, all proud of herself. He knows something is up.

  • I can't even begin to describe why this scene is so brilliant. Such an underrated movie, and anyone that thinks Ryan Gosling is just a pretty boy needs to see this scene and his whole body of work. He's an amazing actor. The music is the icing on the friggin cake.

  • This is my favourite scene of the film and it's one of the best and saddest scenes I've ever watched.

  • this is so sad..

  • Any movie who uses broken social scene for a soundtrack must be a good fucking film.

  • best scene .perfection of acting

  • I have played this scene so many times. It's that good.

  • for everyone who doesn't know, the person opening up the door when drey first walks up is dan. that's why she looks so shocked and starts to walk away.

  • @knobylob jup, youre right. cuz as soon the door closes you hear him sayin what the fuck or something like that.

  • Właśnie teraz skończyłem oglądać film dziwny film aczkolwiek trzeba go widzieć scena pod koniec w hotelu miażdży.Bardzo smutne i prawdzie na szcześćie zrozumieją tylko nieliczni Pozdrawiam

  • what music video is on the TV? it looks like biggie but i'm not sure.....

  • This is the best scene in independent film history

  • I made it through the whole movie without feeling any type of emotion. Until this scene..... Almost made it......

  • BSS is my favorite band. Can everyone who loves BSS just hug me right now!!

  • can watch this scene over and over again, great song to go with it aswell. beautiful

  • the movie should have ended there.

    would have been brilliant..

  • @dostodabsi i don't think so because they couldn't have ended the movie without repairing the relationship between drey and dan. the whole plot of the movie would have been pointless if they had.

  • @knobylob

    no?

i mean, would have been pessimistic, but nonetheless brilliant.

evry movie nowadays tries desperately to end happy. i dont like that.

and, as i recall , the movie is about failing and despair.

  • @dostodabsi the movie doesn't necessarily have a happy ending. we don't know if dan is going to continue drugging or teaching. to me, the movie is about them keeping each other out of the world of drugs. him using and her selling.

  • @knobylob I read the director wanted everyone to 'fill in the gaps', I thought of it as though they would try to continue being friends- (him shaving his beard as symbolism for trying to clean up his act; the joke after that- keeping the innocence there and trying to keep her away from the dealer)

Yeah, I may have analyzed a little too much...

  • @dostodabsi what? that would have been such a unsatisfying and abrupt ending. i love this scene, but can you actually imagine the movie ending like that?

  • @dostodabsi thought the same..

  • saddest scene in the movie

  • Yeah don't watch this scene if you're only here for BSS! It's kind of a spoiler.

  • very affecting scene

  • favorite scene. when he slumps down, it's as if he is saying with his eyes "i'm sorry i let you down, but this is the real me, i'm not good enough for you"

  • @knobylob couldnt have said it better myself. pure brialliant acting, just using his eyes to convey so much feeling

  • cant believe the words he can say just by using simple looks and expressions. hes the fuckin man.

  • Though I admit that BSS is what attracted me here, I really want to watch this movie now

  • This is reality. A teacher, a committed teacher - is capable of succumbing to chemicals. I admire this movie that portrays depravity - depravity attained by a teacher. He has a good heart. His character has good intentions. But his disease outweighs his intentions. If a middle school history teacher can be chemically possessed, who is free from its grasp? This shows us how we all are at the mercy of our genes - genes regulated by environment. We are slaves. We are fallible. We are teachers.

  • Honestly one of my favourite scenes of all time...

  • Beautifully acted, sad scene. Really stayed with me. Great acting from both him and the young actress. Both would have won Oscars in my book because they were more real than anybody onscreen that year!

  • He need Jesus

  • I really felt like ryan should've won the oscar. Yeah leo's performance and forest in the last king of scotland. But His performance was so real. He displayed so many emotions throughout this film, u could almost feel how he was feeling.

  • this movie broke my heart in two. it's absolutely beautiful and i've never been so touched by a film

Dan Dunne feels so real; it's like he's walking on earth, vulnerable like the rest of us.

  • this is such an honest and beautiful film.

  • I love this movie. This scene especially , with no words what so ever, but with a perfect song, is flawless.

  • i'm still confused by this scene after repeat viewings. can anyone tell me exactly what's happening, what she's finding out or what gosling is doing.

  • @MoogPunch64 IMO, the scene shows two casualties of drugs/drug use. She knew he used but its a whole other thing to personally deal to him. Plus she never probably envisioned the depravity at the hotel or the company he kept. His face is PRICELESS... I interprete disappointment, hurt, and realization... PERFECT SCENE, no words necessary..

  • @MoogPunch64 Have you seen the film? Gosling is a drug user...and she is a student of his at school. He tries to stop her being influenced by the wrong people (the man in the car) but he realises he's not much of a role model (she caught him in the toilets once and knows he uses). This is the climax of the film...when he hits rock bottom and she begins to deal...it's painfully sad and there are so many emotions in this one scene. It's perfect.

  • @heathclifffe i've seen the movie, just never really got this scene. and i just realized at about 0:47 you can hear someone say "put some fucking clothes on"

  • @MoogPunch64 yup, thats Ryan saying that. Anyway love this scene. so heartbreaking but so beautifully acted.

  • Very powerful scene

  • This movie rocked on all levels. They had an inappropriate friendship with an inappropriate connection which was PERFECT for the movie! They should make a sequel. I would love to see what direction these characters took a few years later.

  • God this is such a beautiful and sad scene. Great acting by both actors:)

  • Amazing movie and this was my favorite scene.

Probably one of the greatest scenes in recent movie history.

  • I'm so happy someone posted this scene! I just watched it and this gave me tingles :)

  • RYAN GOSLING IS SO FUCKING HOT<333

  • Peeeerfection.

  • It's sort of ambiguous, but I've always wondered about Frank's role in this scene. Why would Frank have Drey deliver crack to Dan (I assume he knows Dan is in there)? Is he acquiescing to Dan's recommendation that Drey have more positive role models and NOT deliver drugs? I mean, this sort of lesson would certainly seem to swear her off of it. Then Frank's line is, "Everything cool?.... Well, I guess we should get you home then." As in, "You understand? Good, then that's it." Just a theory.

  • I wish that I could believe Frank was trying to teach Drey a lesson, because Anthony Mackie, like Ryan Gosling, is so likeable, despite the character. But it never occurred to me that he knew Dan would be in there. If he did and deliberately sent her up to Dunne, it was probably because he wanted her to swear off HIM, so that he would be the one to influence her (btw, I love the irony of her being caught between a drug dealer and a drug addict). That is my theory, but I like yours, too :)

  • @djmuaddib I agree, Frank was definitely complicit, I think your theory is correct...

  • Oh god, I just adore that smile and nod he gives her, it's so reassuring and supportive, and then the fact is that he's paying her for crack.. just wow. It gets me, everytime.

  • I'm confused, was the main character in the sex thing as well or was he just there for the crack? I couldn't see his character doing something like that

  • @elemento1991

He was just there to provide some dance moves as seen at the school gym dance :-P

  • It's really disturbing that amazing films like this receive such little attention, while movies like Avatar The Last Airbender and the Expendables dominate the box office.

  • @jordanslannan maaan! i was so disappointed with the last airbender and the expendables! >_<

  • i've always looked at this scene as, hmmmm... a lesson from the teacher. I mean, i always understood that look on his face as "see? keep on coming, and you'll keep on seeing this... keep on doing, and thats what you'll become... want that?"... I dont know, its just too great.

  • @bagacera91 no it's more about the interchange between the two. they exchange no words but their actions and the looks on their faces say it all. she gave into drug dealing and he's continuing with the crack. she's giving it to him, and he's paying her for it. it's kinda hard to explain but it's like they see each other fucking their lives up, and yet they just help each other do it, guiltily, but as though this was inevitable.

  • @BleedingxRainbow wow man, indeed great insight or something! But anyway, i think this scene is too complex, gives you many possiblities of thinking depending on the time you watch them... Such a simple scene gives you an enormous amount of possibilities - thats what makes up for an incredible movie!

  • this scene is the best and its so fucking powerful, the movie is incredible and the music is INSANE!!!

  • The look of desperation and him basically saying "This is me, this is what I am." and the look of him shame on his face makes me emotional without him even uttering a single word.

  • Comment removed

  • gets my every time

  • This scene is too good for words.

  • I don't get this scene...could someone explain?

  • @foxyswedee well to me, the look on his face says thats what i am and thats what ive become.. the way he looks ather basically means ive warned you and ur doing the opposite of what itold u to do... ur gonna endup like the people in this room if u keep doing what u just did. i guess ? i have to rewatch this movie, its just incredible

  • @foxyswedee SEE THE MOVIE! That's the only explanation you need. My favorite movie of all time.

  • BSS was a really great choice for this movie's soundtrack.

  • I don't really understand it. I mean I do of course. But I'm trying to understand what it means. To me with his fist under his chin. His face is almost Poor girl, How disappointed I am, I don't understand why she's doing this. Or is this because he's so deep init he juss doesn't get that he's a mess? lol It's a scene I'm still trying to figure out.

  • @kgoodwriter92 i think its more about his own guilt, and being unable from stopping her from getting into a life a crime because he himself is a drug addict. its basically him giving up because he has no power to have any say in her life. hes also ashamed that he sees her like this when he knows hes possibly the only good influence in her life.

  • can someone explain this scene to me? its probably the only scene i don't fully understand.

  • Why does Gosling look at the camera for a second?

  • @montyuk106 I think he is just searching the room for something that's not there, when me and my girl split up I spent alot of time in my room listening to music like this, I tended to look around alot hoping to find something to cheer me up, but it wasn't there, kus there was nothing that could make me happy except her, he is probably doing the same.

  • wow. didn't realize that he opened the door first...what a mess but what a fantastically powerful yet completely nuanced piece of art.

  • ahhh. good point. didn't realize that either

  • One of the greatest films of all time. So well written, acted and directed. So amazingly subtle. One of the best scenes of all time. Underrated and should be viewed by all film students as a master class in how to make a movie.

  • @lorco25 better yet it should be viewed by all grade school students on how to avoid drugs but understand addicts with a little more compassion and not grow up to have cynically polar biased notions

  • Perfect scene up there with the True Romance scene between Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken. This scene is a little better because it doesn't have dialogue. What is so cool is that Anthony Mackie could arguably be the antagonist but you don't think he is because his character is so well written.

  • Ryan (and Shareeka) are one of those rare actors who can say everything in a scene with their eyes. Really incredible stuff. I'd forgotten how great this scene was... makes me never want to see a mainstream movie ever again. lol.

  • Powerful stuff.

  • I never realized, after he shuts the door, you can hear the woman say, "Where you goin?", and he says "Put some fuckin clothes on... put some clothes on!"

  • that album is in a death struggle for my favorite of all time

  • What's the song/album? I like it too.

  • shampoo suicide by broken social scene.

  • such a powerful scene.. it says so much in so little

  • amazing scene

  • sooooooooo great!

  • Shareeka Epps is incredible! i think she did a better job than ryan here...if u watch the movie, she does everything perfect!

    ryan too!!

  • This is such a great film. Can't imagine it without Broken Social Scene, though.

  • i love this movie and ryan gosling. and the girl was really good in the role and not like a regular annoying child actor

  • Ryan Gosling is brilliant in this film. But Shareeka Epps is a pure revelation. She brings the film together and that takes alot.

  • what?! she didnt even count the money lol jk i really wanna see this movie it looks good

  • @djn00nan, you have to!

  • ya i saw it, it was pretty good. ryan gosling looks identical to this guy i used to buy methadone from

  • Wow...I haven't seen the movie yet - the soundtrack from broken social scene was what attracted me - but the acting is SO sincere. Ryan Gosling said 1000 things without speaking one single line.

  • @xxassessment same here

  • @xxassessment Well that's a shame that this scene got spoiled for you before you saw it.

  • i love this scene. possibly the best scene i have ever seen to date. and i haven't even watched the film yet!!! does anyone know any free movie sites that have this movie? thanks

  • this is my favorite part of the movie. It is so deep and I love the song. I played this part over and over again. Such a good movie!

  • maybe it's the most important, deep, meaningful lesson Ryan has tought to his student.. that's how i thought after watching this film, which brought me a scilent but powerful sorrow.

  • i nearly cried at this scene when i watched the movie, she acts heartbreakingly good.

and...if you don't mind me saying so - ryan gosling is so ... SO sexy.

  • This movie is so good.

  • Thank u so much for uploading this, the soundtrack from BSS is just stunning, it gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it, its a fantastiv movie and this scene just is like the cherry on top of it. Long live independent movies and movie makers.

  • This is a very important scene in this film. If you haven't seen it then fucking see it.

  • Powerful scene!! I wouldn't wish that addiction on my worst enemy!

  • Is there more BSS songs in this film?

  • yeah in the other motel scene with that one lady from the bar and he talks about how he does the drugs to get by.

lover's spit by broken social scene. also the trailer of the movie features stars and sons.

  • This scene was amazing..........actually the whole movie was amazing.....and Ryan gosling was just PERFECT !!!!!!!!

  • Broken Social Scene did the whole soundtrack.

  • Does anyone know any other films with BSS in the soundtrack?

  • Snow Cake

  • Is that any good?

  • I thought the movie was pretty good and I was on the fence of whether I thought it was great or just good. When this scene occured it made the decision for me. It was so epic and made the film fantastic.

  • One of the most heartbreaking scenes in film.

  • Comment removed

  • they use a lot of broken social scene in this film which is perfect!

  • I cant stop watching this..and everytime i watch it..i get chills

Such a powerful scene and the acting is beyond amazing ..They both deserve an award

  • amooo a ryan goslingggggggg

  • That was one of the most breathtaking things i've ever seen

  • I was sooo choked up when I saw this and I still get kinda...ya know?

  • This is by far one of the best films I have ever seen, and this scene in particular is perfect in every way ...deep.

  • I saw the movie last night and I had to watch this scene twice because its just breathtaking. The way he looks at her - it says so much more than words could ever do. One of the best movies I have seen in a long time, brilliant scene and Ryan Gosling is simply amazing.

  • i understand hwat hes saying when he looks at her it wasl ike he was saying " is this what you really want?"

  • also, "there's no helping me anymore..."

  • yes this film is very good....the motel scene is extremely good because it sort of sums up the whole idea of the film, how ryan tried to get his student away from selling drugs eventhough he did them.

  • this scene alone was worth the bloody Oscar. too bad Gosling was up against Forest Whitaker that year

  • One of the best syncing of music/song and film since Gooodfellas--hits you hard on an emotional level while giving meaning to the subtle, unspoken downward spiral happening in the scene. . . sublime.

  • what part in goodfellas does that? Certainly not when tommy gets whacked or when franky is found in the meat truck:p

  • What does Goodfellas have to do with anything?

  • hahahaha, I have no idea what this comment is in response to, but it made me laugh, I don't want to know either, let's just leave it as it is, it was good.

  • this is the kind of scene you have to watch over and over again. every time i watch it, i understand it more and more.

the look on his face as he nods to her is almost hard to describe. he just gives up trying to help her and just gives in to the darkness, so to speak.

ryan gosling was just masterful in this film.

  • Agreed! What a fine actor.

  • @tragic1Kingdom You`re absolutly right. I`ve been watching this scene bilion times

What the fantastic actors, what the fascinated and chilled atmosphere. I can`t even imagine this film without Gosling and this little girl.

    Regards from Poland

  • I love this song, so when it started playing I really got a sense of dread and thrill. Powerful cinema!

  • pwerful scene

  • i have a miniature obsession with this movie, particularly this scene.

  • I don't get what's happening

    I'm hopeless :)

  • well have u seen the movie?

  • and here come the goosebumps... almost every time

  • ugh, this scene is so amazing.

  • that means ppl don't change. Ppl are fckd up

  • Anyone know the name of the song?

  • shampoo suicide

    broken social scene

  • so effin amazing....

i wish that the oscars were less of a popularity contest... if that were so then this would have been best picture of the year.... oh well.......

    my all-time favorite movie

  • Comment removed

  • Outstanding movie, excellent performances, amazing plot, it captures reality with every detail of its existence. Some choose drug abuse, some choose denial, some alcohol, many don't understand it and accept it, but this is how it is: and the ending deserved at least an academy award... Shampoo suicide is the perfect metaphor

  • This Is Probobbly One Of My Favorite Scene Ever Also Along With Less Then Zero When They Go From Him Giving A Blow Job To The Time Of His Death. the Shampoo Suicide Made The Scene More Powerful And Emotional. I Love How There Were No Vocal Communication Between The Two Just Body Language And Facial Gestures. Oscar Worthy Stupid Forrest

  • One of the best scenes i've ever seen! no joke

  • a very POWERFUL scene

  • This scene is amazing. The fact that the student is selling drugs to the teacher is... I don't know but its really powerful. And the music just enhances the whole thing making it all seem perfect.

  • had Forest Whitaker not been in the race that year, I'd hand the Oscar to Gosling

  • i like how it shows how they are both where they arent suppose to be, her selling drugs and him doing drugs. i love this movie! and broken sociall scene (BSS) set my soul alive with shampoo suicide along with lovers spit.

  • this movie should have gotten best picture. and sheereka (sp?) should've been nominated as well. she couldve taken meryl streep's place for d.w.p.

  • he was nominated for an oscar because of this movie, wasn´t he?? ....I loooove this movie and he is just amazing...so handsome *.*

  • this is such an amazing movie. this scene was also extremely well made and the song just went perfectly with it.

  • One amazing scene. And i think the song, and its buildup goes along perfectly with the visuals.

  • my favorite movie. and uh, i fell in love with gosling after watching it. sigh.

  • lol...me too

  • good movie good song good scene what more do you want

  • yes your right

  • has to be seen in context, but wow!

  • This song was just perfect for that scene.

  • This scene gives me chills every time I see it. So powerful.

  • It is amazing to see the band perform this song and Bedroom Rock live. Kevin Drew showcases how remarkable his voice is.

Ryan Gosling is protraying a broken man in a broken system. Being a teacher it scares me how perfect teachers must be, but never live up to expectations in many people's eyes. It is a day to day struggle, but I enjoy it.

  • They opened up last Friday night's show in Toronto with both those tracks. Their best 2 tracks in my opinion. It was amazing! The BEST LIVE BAND EVER!

  • at 1:55- 1:57 he gave her this look like " this is the life i chose, is this the life you want?"

i think it got through to her
