As a 10th grade percussionist band nerd, I was very much looking forward to playing this piece in my school's Wind Ensemble. He recently took this off the list. Now it's Molly on the Shore by Percy Grainger, Sleep by Eric Whitacre, Poem by Jonathan Frazner (?), and Ride by Samuel Hazo. All still great pieces. I just really like the spontaneous, abrupt, precision with which the fast part is written to be played.
Played 1st trumpet. We played this amazing piece for Texas State Honor Band and surprisingly won State! We played this in middle school. Very difficult piece for a 13 year old!
@mAsTeRsLiCk109 im playing 3rd clarinet part and i just got it today. ITS REDICULUS!! Im in grade nine so im 14! thers like 4 differant octaves im hitting all of a sudden at some point!
@maestrojimbo Actually this is a bit of a confusing point. as it is the third movement from Scumann's New England Triptych written for orchestra. Its transcription for band was by Schumann himself, adding to the continuing confusion...original piece for band or an "arrangement".
@rdsmith925 My recollection is that the orchestra and band versions are not the same structually. To add to the confusion, Schuman did a rework for solo piano for the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.
I love this piece and always liked playing it. This is a wonderful recording of it, and Revelli was incredible. But finding these box sets of the Revelli Years is like findling 5 sets of the Holy Grail. Very hard to find. I have this volume (1) but am trying to find the other 4. If anyone knows of anyone with copies they want to sell, please let me know. Also, if you want to hear another great piece from this set, hopefully someone will post the Menotti 'Overture and Caccia'. VERY hard.
@dj4eagle I'm actually playing 1st trombone on this right now, and I find it extremely random. I think both the beginning and the end are nice, but the middle is too dispersed with random chord.
@genmauri3 Probably because it was too hard for them...when I've both performed and conducted this piece, it was very hard for groups to get thier head wrapped around it when they were working too hard at it. Very under-rated in it's difficulty.
I liked the fact that Dr. Revelli never apologized for doing what had to be done to get the music played well, and correctly...not only the notes, but also the soul of the composition.
excellent basson. however did the oboe get removed completely? there should have been two oboe parts written for this piece but i heard none. aside from this, also the snare drum was wonderful! overall lovely sound.
I can assure you that Revelli always had 4 or 5 oboes in the band. In the 67/68 bands I was second of 5. Revelli's goal was to blend sounds so that no one instrument could be distinguished from others. He claimed this homogeneous sound concept was something he learned from Eugene Ormandy - his friend and colleague.
4ever...it's definitely a labor of love. Please view College Clarinetists Gone Wild if you want to hear something even more challenging! Thanks for viewing Chester.
@4everpaulmccartney I feel ya, when I was a senior in high school I got to play the snare drum piece. SO much fun, but SO hard and SO difficult to learn and play solidly.

Revelli was an asshole and 90% of what he said was bullshit !
And I miss him.
Instrumental music today needs many more like him !!!

So much more interesting and developed than the orchestral version. Both fun to perform and listen to.

Dr. Revelli was magnificent..and very tough, as I found out for myself. Are there any videos or recordings of the MMB when he was its director?
DAJKappa85 2 years ago
@DAJKappa85 You got that right; I had Dr. Revelli as a guest conductor at VanderCook back in the 80's. Learned a lot though :)

This is probably the best recording and interpretation of "Chester" I've ever heard. Revelli really knew his stuff.
