is well known that americans use to "prize" american cinema and all stuff before than foreign realizations even the foreign ones are superior in quality and thematic; simple national nepotism
Scanline definitely are the leaders now in terms of fluid sims. Not seen any other movie that can compare. Likewise Digital Domain are probably the leaders in rigid body dynamics. Personally I feel as though ILM has lost its crown to DD and Weta recently for VFX.
This makes me appreciate movies more. That in this industry it aint easy as what you think. The amount of work and render time put into this not as easy as a click of a button.
Though credit also has to go to Dean Semler's extraordinary photography. I bet he also gave the VFX folks detailed descriptions regarding lighting in the VFX shots. Though done by different companies, they look remarkably coherent throughout the whole film. I mean, this is the guy who made "Dances with Wolves" look so awesome almost 20 years ago. Best cinematography in an Emmerich picture alongside Deschanel's work on the "Patriot".
Great to see that German VFX companies can do remarkable stuff like that, when they get enough money to play with. It has though become kind of a speciality of scanline to do water effects. Yet, I have to admit that while in cinema watching the film I immediately thought: Those are the best digital water effects I've seen so far. Far beyond "Perfect Storm" and "Day after Tomorrow", which were done by ILM. Normally I think of ILM as VFX's top dog, but this has to make them envious as hell.
actually, the water FX in TheDayAfterTomorow (at least the most of them) were done by DigitalDomain and not ILM. They used their Storm Software I think. Breakdowns should still b on their page. ;-) Did you checkout the water for "Evan Almighty"( ILM ) ? BROAD DAYLIGHT shots. Nothing like at night and u only see a little...they are (imo) the best to date. Hereafter (scanline again) is hard to compare to it, but I think they are those 2 r the most awesome ones for water FX to date.
digital domain is german?

blameist 1 month ago
@blameist Pretty sure it was Maya, Nuke and Real flow. :)
DanZaidan 1 month ago
@DanZaidan i'm sure they used 3ds max because when i warched making of 2012 i observed 3ds max interface. with realflow, maya, and nuke i agree

@saverne06 Oh yeah. They used it with Thinking particles to build the system for destroying LA. Thanks for reminding me :)

This movie should have won an Oscar for "Greatest contrast between VFX quality and plot quality," but Transformers 2 stole it away!

Oh, this work (and the other work, like LA Earthquake 1/2 and Las Vegas Destruction by Uncharted Territory) makes them BEYOND envious)
KTKomedy2813 7 months ago
@Anteeeru All scanline does is fluid simulations. If they had to try and duplicate Transformers 3, they'd be completely screwed.

I never would never have guessedthey used so many fluidsims in one shot... They're blended so seamlessly.
I'll try to make a tsunami now that I know how the pros did it.
