Ok guys, i have a history projesct to do on Protest music. I just want to know some answers. I really need help. and if you can, thanks Is this a protest song? If so, what is he trying to say, and what is the meaning?
You gotta be kidding. The is the quintessential protest song. What he's trying to say is "look around. we're messing up everywhere. if we don't change our ways, say goodbye to the world we know."
hey it WAS an era wether we liked the way we lived it, or who we were in it, or what happened to us in it, it must be something to be remembered because alot of civil liberties did come about because of all those people who did wine moan groan complain protest OPENED THEIR MOUTHES AND DID A F****** THING ABOOUT IT. I'm sorry but people are like cattle and will be led off to slaughter if not taught to think different or openly opinionate. My utmost respect to your husband my family has vets too
I also love Sloan's "A Must to Avoid." It's my favorite Herman's Hermits song. Sloan was well tuned into the pop sounds of the mid-60's. I wish he had written more hits.
To all Muslims. The Islamic world it is exploding. Mullah's issuing fatwas bodies floating. You don't believe in war so what's that Quran your toting....Don't you understand, if Iran gets the bomb there's no running away.. Hate your non-Muslim neighbors but don't forget to pray five times a day. Tell me over and over and over again my friend Islam is bringing the world to destruction...
Saw PF on his recent trip to Portland. He's just as full of s--t as he always was. He wrote some good tunes, was a flop as a performer, his recordings bombed, and he almost killed the Grass Roots after Willy, Denny and I left by putting out two horrable singles after we put out Where We're You When I Needed You. (He later errased Willies vocal and replaced with his own as if he had released it) Thanks to Rob Grill the Roots were saved. This video shows his perfectly. An over inflated goof.
wow such sour grapes from a "mellow" guy no one would ever have heard of without that song "you put out" that was written by Sloan. Funny the Grass Roots in their heyday continued to record good Sloan songs after you were gone, why weren't they begging you to come back? Sloan is a non-commercial nutty goof, which makes him all the more lovable for his great contributions to popular music.
Mellow guy? Not Me. Still don't think anyone has heard of me and don't care. Sour grapes. Non here. Just have an opinion. Like I don't think the constitution was changed because Phil wrote 'Eve'. I'm I not entilted to an opinion on this forum? I was happy to leave the "Toots" Never wanted back. Phil wrote some good tunes. Which proves you can be a goof and write good tunes.
you're entitled to your opinion, but it doesn't seem like you read your own post - you falsely claimed Sloan killed "your" Grass Roots. I'm entitled to respond to your opinion with facts, free country. re: his claim that he helped change the constitution, you have to argue with NPR:
The anti-war anthem was one of the first protest songs to make the pop charts. It became the rallying cry for supporters of the 26th Amendment to the Constitution, which changed the voting age from 21 to 18.
On your bio it gives your age as 39. The Vietnam war ended before you were born. PF was a distant memory in 1977/78 and your giving me a history lesson? I lived that era attended anti war rallies and marched to help change the voting age. I worked with Phil, Lou, Steve, Bones, and Jay. I doubt you have even met any of them. I respect your opinion as a fan and an expert in US history. But ........ I was there, for the war, the 26th Amendment and the music. Sorry & Good Bye.
you were there and so were many others, i just wanted to let people reading the thread that your memories may differ from the historical record. it's just kind of a bummer for me that you were "there" in that great era of peace and love with the guy that wrote "your" song, and came here with nothing but negative things to say.
Well, good for you. Did you go to Vietnam? I doubt you have memories of that "war". My husband does and he doesn't like them...but he dealt with them gracefully w/ 3 Purple Hearts. SO, 2 years ago, a 39 year old person would have been born in what....1969? NOT 1977/78.
Vietnam wasn't over until 1975, therefore YOU are an asshat w/pisspoor math skills as well as a bitter twat w/ all KINDS of issues with PF Sloan & anyone else that like him
@stuetrory The US was out of Viet Nam in 1973. The NVA, backed by Russian and Red Chinese weapons and support, invaded South Viet Nam in 1975. Congress refused any aid of any kind to the RVN. And things really went to hell.
@infostream Just saw the video, gotta say the song did not get the 26th amendment passed, but you are correct it was a rallying cry for those of us that wanted change, were tired of the power of the industro-military complex. I would say that the reason why Sloan didn't shoot up into the stratosphere, was because of the other guy writing protest songs!! Bob Dylan
@dymo60 So in otherwords you were part of ther "original" Grass Roots" on the "Where Where You When I Needed You" Album?...I have that album! Good album...I hate to tell you this but nobody in the 60's doing folk rock will ever be as good as the Byrds! They could play anything! Look how influential they were! Nothing against the Grass Roots but The Byrds will always be my favorite and thsi is form a 35 year old who listens to 60's music!
@RYRocker Your right that album is an interesting imitation of the byrds[ listen to the west coast pop art experimentasl band do heres were you belong a pf sloan song it sounds like the byrds] pf sloan actually did rock before he did folk then he went to folk rock because dylan and the byrds did

@dymo60 The grassroots stole the name from arthur lee who said he could have taken legal action but he liked the name love better singers who dont write songs are nothing in the age of bob dylan phil ochs and pf sloan .
@dymo60 Saying Phillip wrote "good songs" is a gross understatement. Yes he can be an ass at times but then so could John Lennon, Tom Petty and many others in the world of entertainers. But I just love the music they wrote . Beethoven was a complete dick to everyone around him... He is still wonderful to listen to... so is p.f.sloan. You mention yor disdaain for Phillip... then WHY did you go see him?
Phil is the genius who wrote the song but who knows where it would have gone had Barry not recorded it in his style as the two voices and phrasing are completely different and this is a classic case of two artists combining to create a masterpiece. I'm so glad Phil is playing again as he is a must along with McCartney and Paul Simon of writers who have influenced me that I have to see live. Cheers
i wasn't trying to insult McGuire, just trying to point out there's a difference in the kind of creativity between doing a good cover, and WRITING a great song. btw does it occur to you that by you saying that a comparison to the singers on American Idol is an insult, that you are insulting all those singers and their fans?
Hi there......I guess what I was trying to say in my earlier post is that it's possible to speak highly of PF Sloane without it being at Barry's expense. But, of course, everyone's entitled to their opinion.
then, of course, Barry fits into that catagory. He is a truly creative, non-conformist original. It seems like you're not really getting the getting the how a comparison to American Idol co ver is quite an insult to someone like Barry. Also, there's a difference between a 'cover' and an interpretation of a song.
PF Sloan has made many contributions to the music I like. His work with the Grassroots was most of their best work. He wrote for others also. It's great to see him back again.
basically if you like american idol, then the barry mcguire version is for you. if you like bob dylan, leonard cohen, tom waits, then PF Sloan is the man.
Ya know, this of course, is not true. Barry's a friend of mine. He's a down to earth guy who can interpret the hell out of song. The insulting comparison just rings false because Barry's version is more closely compared to
his contemporaries and friends, The Byrds doing Mr.Tamborine Man and Turn, Turn, Turn.
When you've had a nearly 50 year career in music maybe I can make false comparisons about you.
doesn't seem like you understand the point furay - you say Barry can interpret the hell out of a song - we agree, and that is exactly what the American Idol cover-singer contest is about. no one is saying McGuire is a bad guy or a bad singer. but some of us prefer the quirky rough edges of truly creative non-conformist originals.

I dont know how anyone can knock this guy's writing ability:
Eve Of Destruction
Secret Agent Man
You Baby
Let Me Be
A Must To Avoid
Take Me For What I'm Worth
I Found A Girl
and at least 10 other popular 60s songs I can think of
And even though Barry MacGuire sang it, Phil got all the backlash for writing it. It is still a great song and the lyrics still hold up today.

When we outed a popular government in Iran and then installed the Shah, there was anger, there was retaliation.
When we built a military base on Muslim holy ground in Saudi Arabia, there was anger, there was retaliation.
When we give billions of dollars to the Israeli government's military which is used largely to kill Muslims, there is anger, there is retaliation.
Blowback.
If you disagree with me then invite China to build a base in D.C.
