  • tears fall upon my keyboard

  • @KaNaKa5wuno really? REALLY?!!? relax...relax

  • Correct me if I am wrong but I believe is was originally recorded by Bro Palani Vaughan in the late 80's ?..My cousin Jason added my Tutu man's Oli's to his own version..this is Our lament..

  • Such a beautiful, yet incredibly sad song. Its hard to listen to without feeling the horrific loss of the culture, land and language, that's been taken away from such wonderful people.

What happen to Hawaii was inevitable.....however, the WAY it happen was UNCONSCIONABLE.

  • beautiful

  • Everytime I hear this I cry and get chills...Luv it

  • Never 4get where you come from...

  • America was wrong to take over Hawai'i. I wish that Queen Liliokaulani could have drafted the constitution which she had planned on without American interference. The natives deserve the land, their rights, the sacredness which Hawai'i represents. America doesn't care about that; they care about money, and draining anybody they want to dry of any resource which produces money. I feel more ashamed as an American learning what we've done to others. I'm so deeply sorry :(

  • BJ PENN WALK OUT BABY.

Nobody represents the hawaiian spirit more than B.J. Penn.

  • @ousooners182 bj penn dosent represent the hawaiian spirit for shit. is still down with kau inoa. fuck dem. what about the hawaiians learning american and hawaiian kingdom law, trying to stop this illegal occupation?

  • @ousooners182: I'm sorry, but I do NOT feel that BJ Penn represents the Hawaiian spirit more than everyone else in the world. I watched the documentary that was done for the Penn/GSP fight, and I think he reinforced a lot of bad stereotypes that are associated with Hawaiians. Maybe he does represent some of the spirit, but I would never go so far to say that no one else represents the Hawaiian spirit more than he.

  • @ousooners182 Thats the truth the only ones that represents the Hawaiian Spirits are the People of Hawai'i, thank you for you're support

  • may the nation of Hawaii rise again...i am one of the FOUR writers of this beautiful song...please feel free to visit my site, Hawaii78.com, to learn about the true and fascinating story behind the writing of this song,,,thank you IZ and the Boys....aloha kawika crowley

  • our nation which we can and must save! oe i ka mokupuni o hawai'i!

  • Mahalo nui loa kakou, brought tears to my eyes. Ku i ka pono.

  • Hawaii inside my heart for ever.

The very best to the people .

    A HUI HOU.

  • I miss Bruddah IZ! I cry when he sings! His voice and his music brings me peace and joy!

Only the great gods of the Hawaiian islands above can bring us a great gifted man like IZ with the true spirit of Aloha!

The great gods smile upon Buddah IZ!

As I say to you in my parents tongue, from their islands:

"Eise puo megali anthropos o aderpho mou!"

Meaning: You're a great man my brother!

May your name and music live on for eternity!!

  • Indigenous people from all over the world have been exterminated via military might and forced raping of the women by the Colonizers. Xenophobia is alive a well as this video shows. Fight for indigenous people's rights and the right to not be colonized and exploited further.

  • thank you!

  • BJ Penns Theme song in UFC.

  • Hawaii Is beautiful and its because of IZ and his beautiful songs mahalo for his nice songs

  • Such a powerful song

  • Man I wish you were still alive Iz cause I was only 3 months old when I first saw you. R.I.P.

  • This song brings tears to my eyes...

  • I think I just found a little Hawaiian living in me.

And his heart goes out to you all.

Don't let them take away your I. Love from Norway!

  • I wish i could go back in time and see Hawaii the way she was meant to be.

    RIP Iz.

  • Kia oa, I too am pleased I see no negative feedback here, this song is so meaningful for all our pacific peoples. JUSTICE, LIBERTY, & SELF DETERMINATION FOR THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF THE PACIFIC!!!!!

    Arohanui Iz

  • I very much love the hawaiian culture a culture based on love..brother Iz your voice touches hearts

  • i am very much surprised and glad to see that their is no haole bashing going on in any comments i see

  • Oh this song..it brings back sad memories. My dad, brothers, cousins, aunties etc..all were born and raised in Hawaii. I on the other hand was born and raised in CA. Anyway, I had never heard this song till I bought bradduh Iz's CD in the Kona airport after going to my dad's funeral. Whew - so many emotions came up - cause my dad, bro's and I really want/ed Hawaii to go back to what it was. And my dad, like Bradduh Iz's dad died from a massive heart attack. Thank you for sharing with us...

  • @JLoChing aww so sad to hear. i live in Kona

  • Fight for your culture and dont let big brother take it over with their commercial propoganda of "a god life" your culture is your life and your acient ways is your begining for the younger ones ,dont let them destroy your life . They have done it on my island of Puerto Rico and it will be very hard to turn it back, it will take time.

Your brother form the carribbean Mahalo

  • maika'i keia himeni....HA'AHEO HAWAI'I!!!!

  • Ugh, Everytime I hear this song I get goosbumps and I get sad..

It's sad how we are now compared to before.

Hopefully one day Hawaii can be sustainable once again.

  • Great job making the video!

  • good job and way to speak up fijikid80

  • When I first really listened to this song I was only 15 and it made me tear up. 5 years later and it still is the ONLY song to have had such an effect on me. Being 1/2 Chamorro and 1/4 Ikiribati, I can truly relate to Israel's message. JUSTICE, LIBERTY, & SELF DETERMINATION FOR THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF THE PACIFIC!!!!!

  • Hafa adai! I am half Chamorro from Saipan. Bro, when you learn more about the history of the Pacific and other areas, it will make you sick! We all share the same threat but much of our generation is brainwashed into the American lifestyle. How did we go from a people that was independent to being dependent on the US? We have been colonized in our minds. The military base in Guam will further complicate the situation. We are on the path of Hawai'i. We will become minority in our lands.

  • @nesianboy People need to start physically fighting back, that's all I'm saying. I used to believe in non-violence, but that only makes the colonizer feel they have the ultimate power. NEVER EVER allow yourselves to become a minority in your own homeland. As a Fijian, we were a minority in our own homeland for almost a century, but now we are the majority again. Our homelands belong to us as the native peoples of the Pacific, not outsiders!!!

  • When I really listened to this song for the 1st time I was only 15 and yet it made me tear up. 5 years later, it still is the ONLY song to have had such an effect on me. Being 1/2 Chamorro and 1/4 Ikiribati, I can truly relate to this song's message. JUSTICE, LIBERTY, & SELF DETERMINATION FOR THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF THE PACIFIC!!!!!!!!

  • Amen to that!!!

  • My husband and I are Hawai'ian in our hearts and souls. It is our strongest desire to help in any way the blooded Hawai'ians tell us is best, to help them regain their rightful Nation. We were blessed to be living among native Hawaiians, to be accepted by them, and to help the elders when they held a vote. Any decisions are theirs, not ours to say, not ours to even mention, but to simply follow them.

The aina is calling us Home again, to finish our lives working for the independence denied them.

  • hawaiians will never die because the spirit is 2 strong.

just because somebody is not hawaiian by blood or ancestry doesn't mean they can't share the same love , respect, and spirit as a great people.

    Peace & Love 4rm Guam

  • Hawai`i Loa Ku Like Kakou!

  • I cant help but shed tears everytime i hear this masterpiece.

    Ku'e!!!!!

  • What Would Jesus Do? what has his people done but brought mosquitos flys rats mice gonoreaha syphillis typhoid mumps measeals leprosy wepons of mass destruction and a war to our peaceful land. when will the USA right its wrongs and leave my home and restore it to its natural unadulterated eden that in some places still exist. A'o a'o a'o na kanaka, ku i ka pono!

  • Mahalo; I cry; we are kept from makua; from nau'e; etc. As a kanaka I pay alot to live in a condo on waikiki beach yet yesterday i was accosted by a guy handing out jesus flyers when i went to the wall to watch the sunset. when i looked away from his flyers he shoved them in my face again; i protected my personal space by a defensive hand swipe knocking the haole's flyers out of his hands, he blamed me of assault and called 911. i said what would jesus do?

  • great video! mahalo nui loa. They have dug up our kupunaʻs bones and they have used our sacred stones to build an empire of hate and greed. Even if by my two hands alone, i will take back these stones and rebuild what is rightfully ours.

  • I don't understand the logic of Americans and Asians who feel they are entitled to move to Hawai'i when these lands are NOT THEIRS!!! Please leave Hawai'i and its lands to its native people!!! For all of you non-Hawaiians living in Hawai'i, grow a conscience and realize that you are aiding in the theft of Hawaiian tribal lands!!! Please move away and leave Hawai'i to its native people, the real people who only deserve to live there. The Pacific would be better with its native people there only!

  • Hokulani, your vid and Mickey Ioane's mele say it all.

    Mahalo.

    Me ke aloha,

    Auntie Wanda

  • Hawaii for Hawaiians

  • hawaii is a beautiful country and we need to keep it that way

  • I lived in Hawaii in the late 1980's and went back to live in 2003. The growth, uncrotolled growth, is crushing and marking up a beautiful place and culture. This video always brings me to tears as the message, and the messanger, are from the soul

  • I've lived in Hawai'i and I've been on that bridge at 1:35 the message took a few views to sink in but this song is beautiful

  • hawaii was such a beautiful island and it still is from this day today but i think it would look a lot better when there wasn't so many houses built or having us watch thoughs houses get torn down. i didn't really get the message of this song until now mahalo (thank you) for showing this.

  • I'm not hawian, but I agree. People need to stop building over there. The land and it's beauty is being destroied. It's gotten to the point where you really can't go anywhere without running into a resort or something. Even though you can still find bits of what is was like if you look for it. However, this only shows that building needs to stop before the land, its people, thier culture, and everything that the Hawian Island stand for is completely destroied! Help save Hawaii and it's people.

  • I believe that all things eternal last.......This Mans work will indeed!!! A long time!!!

  • A few years ago I was invited to move to HAWAII...Kauai actually....I told them that I could NOT in all consciencness do that as it would be Theft to do so.

  • That those lands are not mine but others lands. As a White man i dont know how to solve these things other than to pray for Gods guidence and that justice and Mercy be done according to HIM!!! I pray for the hearts of many friends there as they deal with the Rape of their lands and the ache in their hearts! We whites need to be kinder with our words......Hawaiians....I have no right to tell them how to think...only to PRAY!!!

  • Hawai'i '78...eha pu'uwai..........E Pumehana Iz.......forever you are in my heart...Mahalo Ka'kou....Uilani Zablan..Kaneohe,Papakolea,Kohala..Rest Well

  • USA has Used HAWAI'I As their WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION WHILE GOING FOR GOLBAL DOMNINATION OF THE ELITE FEW= New WORLD ORDER, in 30 years the Hawaiian Race will be Extinct with no PURE Hawaiians, in 50 yearz NO HAWAIIAN OF 50% or higher. USA HAS OVER 860 US BASES ALL OVER THE PLANET.

USED AS TOOLS TO HELP THE ELITE RAPE RESOURCES, KEEP THIRD WORLD NATIONS & COUNTRIES " THIRD WORLD" AND GENOCIDE & CULTURECIDE.

  • yeah, you are right! such evil empire under the guise of liberation suffering people, when they themselves are the causes of most of the sufferings around the world!

  • Wow! thats heavy but no doubt troo, but its not only the americans its the english too, and the french, they are all greedy whites....

  • I'm so sorry, but I might get bashed for this, but after listening carefully to Bruddah IZ's music, I can't help but to one day travel to the nation of Hawaii.

But, what does Ku Ika Pono mean?

  • Ku i ka pono. Stand in rightness/justice/righteousness/right conduct/right action. Another word mentioned in some music is 'Ike pono which means correct knowledge, correct insight, correct sight, and it can also imply correct retelling and right cause depicting on the usage.

  • Aloha to my brothers and sisters in our Nation of Hawai'i, it pains me to see what there did to our lands and islands....

  • Great job on this video brother. As a Fijian, I truly understand what Hawaiians are going through. My homeland was stolen before as well by outsiders, just like Hawai'i is still stolen by outsiders everyday. Hawai'i deserves its freedom like other nations in the Pacific have. Hopefully people understand more of what Hawaiians go through by watching this video. We have a saying back home...TABU SORO....which means "never, ever give up!" Keep up the good fight!!! Our prayers are with you all.

  • This is an awesome video, Hokulani.

IZ would be pleased, I am sure.

You've done a very good thing here,

the young people especially need to be reminded

that before McDonalds there was love and dignity.

Respect to you and all Kanaka Maoli.

  • For me there has never been a singer that has touched me so with his music, from the beautiful songs of the islands to the politcal aspect. A special man was here for to short a time.......Thanks for posting his music for all to enjoy

  • The Hawaiian language must be the most beautiful language in the world.

  • this song brings back so many good memories. i havent heard this song in years.

  • Great lyrics and well chosen photos. Iz made this song with such heart, it reminds me of the the great Barry White's voice, but with a political point in the lyrics not sexual point.

  • Such a beautiful and haunting song. Very moving.

  • Great song and video ,thank you.

  • Well done on the video! I don't understand the need for all this development going on, not only in Hawaii, but all over the globe! when does it stop! As far as Hawaii...."What will the kings think?" I feel I have a Kahiko soul, so seeing the land the way it is, I don't like! and at times I wanna cry feeling helpless and powerless......

  • There is "all this development" because

people continue to make lots of babies!

  • i think less because people keep making babies, and more because people are greedy. if development was about sustaining a bigger population we wouldn't see hotels, condos, retail stores, expensive estates, etc. going up everywhere. we'd see affordable housing and preservation of natural resources that truly support large numbers.

  • this song is so beautiful.. it reminds me something, even though i'm from europe

  • Kanaka or Kanaka Maoli? The difference is staggering. Think about it, brother. Brother? Who is my brother?

  • I lived in Hawaii for 4 years and I miss the people the land.....I fell as if I have left my home...if I felt that as an outsider living within the nation of Hawaii I can imagine how the people feel that were born on the land...mahalo Hawaii

  • The man will live forever in all of our hart's, mind , and soul. We the first native American's feel the pain of Hawaiians,we all have suffered a lose.

  • kanaka = person

    maoli = original, aboriginal, indigenous.

    Kanaka maoli means Native Hawaiian.

Maori, Maohi, Ma'ohi, Maoli all mean the same in Polynesian languages.

  • I do wish that we would use a term that was used historically. Hawaiians never referred to themselves as Kanaka Maoli, just Kanaka. If you need something to differentiate Kanaka 'ula'ula was used but I'm partial to Kanaka 'oiwi.

  • That's actually incorrect. That term was used in its written form in legal documents, proclamations, newspapers and legal translations since the 1840 constitution. The term maoli, however, was usually translated from or as "aborigine" or "native" in English documents. You can find the term Kanaka Maoli and Ali'i Kanaka Maoli in the Hawaiian translation of the Constitution of 1854, Supreme court cases, and as late as petitions in 1891. It was discontinued in the 1920s.

  • I understand that historically,

there was no need to say original -

because the concept of the land being stolen

    did not exist either. 8(

    "They couldn't take the Mana"

  • Actually there was a need to say original. "O'iwi" which is a beautiful term, originally implied "native" to that ahupua'a and then you had the new "Hawaiians" i.e. subjects like the Judds, etc. So maoli was seen as more neutral, plainer, nonregionalistic, easier in legal documents, and more Polynesian (e.g. Maoli, Maohi, and Maori all mean the same).

  • You can also find both terms being used by the Petitions of 1897 by the way, o'iwi and maoli (with maoli being first). So maoli was used historically by the collective Hawaiian masses which shows it was accepted.

Also maoli does not mean just "real" or "original". It can also mean "primary", "aborigine", etc depending on the sentence. People is people translate Hawaiian into English and back into Hawaiian rather than just thinking in Hawaiian. It all makes sense in Hawaiian.

  • What does Kanaka Maoli mean?

  • "Settle for less" could you please elaborate?

  • There was 4 versions of the Akaka Bill. Basically it creates a Native Hawaiian "entity" that would represent Native Hawaiians similar to a Native Hawaiian tribal government. But the Akaka Bill does not include anything about the Crown Lands which were stolen by the Republic of Hawai'i and given to the US without the consent of the Monarchy and Hawaiian citizens (including Native and non-Native Hawaiians). Many believe that the Akaka Bill would stop future talks on Hawai'i's political status.

  • In a nutshell, what was the Akaka bill?

  • Basically it wants to make Hawaiians like Native Americans so we can settle for less.

  • amen

  • Mahalo for the beautiful video. I love Iz! I lived in Hawaii for three years and I respected the land and its children. Give it back!!

  • Ua Mu Ke'ea I Ka Aina I Ka Pono! Kanaka Maoli! This is showing us Hawaiians to stand together as one.

  • I so wish that was true...

But people here buy too much into "mainland bs"

    Like the Standard American Diet....

  • great song touching

  • The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness...How dare the state government use it as a motto, when they are occupying a nation

  • Well I'm glad they did but they should live up to the statement. If you look at how we adopted that motto, it would then mean, "The life of the land is perpetuated in sovereignty". Yes, they are occupying us and destroying our lands. Shame on them.

  • Well actually even the English translations is faulty. Ua mau is unconditional tense. Its more correct to say The life/sovereignty/breath of the land has been and always will be preserved in rightness/correctness/righteousness/justice.

  • well i guess what is rightness/correctness/righteousness/justice is the Hawaiian Nation

  • Yes. In the context of 1842, when the motto was said, justice and righteousness meant the restoration of Hawaiian independence by Great Britain. In todays context, it means the preservation (or restoration depending on your views about "annexation") of Hawaiian nationhood from the US.
