  • am i paranoid if i see them all coming at me?

  • I always know when your mom is coming. Her toes curl, some short rapid breaths, a moan, etc....

  • So...Women leave more often? ;~;

  • I can see it both ways

  • They were all walking away, Neat optical illusion!

  • I didnt see any of them walking away...

I saw them both walking towards me...

Perhaps i am being paranoid? lol

  • Till dad know when mom comes...

    Sorry...

  • My mother walks like a gorilla, not all that fancy with the cat walk style.

  • I perceived the exact opposite.. :/

  • a woman walking towards us is not threatening.

  • and one walking away better not be for long or the man walking forward will smack her

  • When you look at the elbows, you think he's going away, when you look at the knee's you think he's coming

  • I counted 15... did I win?

naa, just kidding, slightly interesting study.

  • this is perception caused by the moment we focus our eye first, nothing evolutionary about this.

models move BOTH ways same time, becouse they are 2d no texture representations of 3d.

same can be done with rotating cube, and any rotating object. you can even force yourself to 'turn' your perception back and forth.

  • I saw all of them walking forward. Oh well ^^

  • i see them both as walking towards

  • I can totally tell because the female body tends to walk straight instead of bending the knees and it makes her look like she is walking forward and backwards. Now on the other hand the male it makes it look like it's going towards you because the knees are bend. When the knees are bend it points to a direction. When it's not it points to both directions. Its also the movement, females use their hips to move more then males. While the male model uses more movement on their legs.

  • excellent percepetion my friend =)

  • Thank you =)

  • I am a evolutionists, however I doubt this caused by evolution.

  • i saw them all coming towards and i can see them going away too

  • It all has to do with emotional and your mind, maybe the things you have been through make you think of either coming or going. Like if someone suffered from abandonment from a the dad, as a child, they would see the man going away and vice versa as for the woman. And not just abandonment but other things people go through day by day

  • At first they all looked like they were walking towards me but i looked at it long enough and for the men i focused on the shoulder area and i finally saw them walking away. took a while though.

  • I see them both walking away, I think the male is exactly the same as the female just bulkier.

  • I see the woman walking towards because her arms are bent and facing outwards, as you would typically see from someone walking away from you. I saw the man as walking towards because his arms were straight.

  • the thing is, if you sceth a cub with all lines, ask any amount of people and the will say differently what axis is the cub paralel with!!! its an ilusanary trick.

  • i see them all walking towards

  • but on the male the knees are moved outwards during his strides, if he was walking away surely that means that the knees would actually be moving further away than we perceive them to be. hard to explain in a short comment, but ive seen these illusions before... maybe its just me.

i can see the woman walking both ways though. i just cant see the male walking away. the knees still bother me.

  • I see them all walking towards me. What could this mean?

  • u must be retarded then lol

  • I see both walking towards me. This reminds me of that black & white animation of a rotating woman which sometimes can be seen rotating clockwise and other times counterclockwise.

  • i see all of them walking in both directions if you take a closer look

  • Might the position of the elbow have something more to do with approach perception? Take note how the arm stance matters in behavior patterning.

  • i see them all walking away......

  • little more depth please?

  • I think all of you seem much more capable of connecting the dots SOOO much better than kids. You should all get a cookie!

  • i feel random in this debate over the walking movement of men and women. the walking movement of men is Stereotypically all manly and muscular and Stereotypically for women is the up an down movement of the hips, foot in front of the other and the small steps

  • It can be thing of habits. Why we use topleft enlightened outsets (e.g. Post Comment button) and rightbottom shaded insets (e.g. Comment on this video textfield)? Isn't solution of this question more linguistic, than evolutionary (if we suppose that [in/out]set unification is of same area as text writing direction etc.)

  • What i mean is that "couch potatoes" tend to accept that what the media potrays as universally true... case in point, these people will react to the slender image of the woman and immediately associate the posterior to the swaying hips, others may not catch on as so, and associate the anterior to the same... in the second case, of course, the 3 closely packed dots cannot be associated with the posterior, is it not?... this is my insight.

  • exactly, the male picture looks a lot like the pubic triangle.

  • Let me just rant on this... notice the midddle 3 dots of the simulation (the ones that denote the hip)... notice that in case of the "woman", these sway more than the same, in the other 2 cases... in my opinion, this would immediately direct the attention of the viewer to the swinging of the hips, rather than the swinging of the arms in the other cases. The greatest factor involved is what i like to call "media conditioning".

  • Useful for figuring out what portion of the human brain is responsible for these kinds of perceptions. See "When the brain flips" as in the Necker Cube.

  • let me tell you why there are 50% of ppl think its walking towards them

because they are all guessing, and because they are all guessing, there is only 2 answer, and because there is only 2 answer, there will only be 50%

  • Pretty sure the illusion is about perception not guessing. I immediately perceive both forms to be walking towards the point of perception. It wasn't a "guess" I conscsiously made, though my brain might have.

  • To me, all three appear to walk towards the camera... Although there is no rational explanation.

  • me too.

  • i dont get it..

  • viruses are a different class of life, funding under the current bush admin has really limited the ability to find such cures, though they may be possible. They will also take buckets of money, genetic engineering isnt cheap. And go fuck yourself and your "just a theory" bullshit. Next time you get an infection, be sure to ask for a 1950's dose of penicillin, because evolved antibiotic resistance is "just part of an unproven theory". asshat.

  • mothertitfucker- genius thinking u deserve a nobhead prize dumbass

  • hope you are joking, or that was a really ignorant comment.

  • Words can not explain how weak headed you must be writing such a bullshit. You gotta be one of those guys sitting in front of their TV and blaming anyone else for their very own misery. Science never claimed to be the remedy of all problems. It is rather the search for knowledge (you know what that is, right?) for which a theory is necessary in the first place.

  • I agree it is a complete waste of time. It gave people like you a way ((the computer)) to share your ignorance with the world.

  • You do realize that every scientific breakthrough starts with a theory/hypothesis, right? They have to ask "what if?" before they jump into the work. Maybe you should look into the scientific process a little more before you go around showing everyone how ignorant you are.

  • i dont get it

  • I know a young lady who walks just like the gender neutral model, and she is probably the most beautiful woman I have ever met. I wonder if there is something in that?

  • QFT.

  • most may not see this as a very productive or progressive research topic, but actually this can tell us alot about how our brains and the brains of other animals develop the ability to percieve 3 dimensions. this could lead to new technology for the visually impaired

  • I guess I can flip a switch them, because I can see any of them either way.

  • Same. The male one took some time though, but eventually managed to see it walking away.

  • woman, man, less attractive woman/asexual human

    all walking towards

  • i got them all right, but im a fucking genius so yeah/

  • same here

  • Yeah I concur; we should be focusing on power, cures, engineering, and other necessities before we worry about the evolutionary development of a brain's interpretation of the movement of the two genders, which would only help us make better models of human brain interpretations of the movement of the two genders...

  • fuck off, and go blow 20 dollars at the movie theater, then come back when you figure out how little money is truly spent on research

  • Dude, I'm a Medical researcher at NYU and they spend a lot of money!

  • For me all were walking towards me...

  • A lot more research to specify what it means is required. Men coming towards them might mean an evolutionary belief in bringing help as in our distant past, wild creatures posed a great threat. Women may run away for safety while men run to you for help. A modern cultural overtone might suggest the approach as ominous--but this is only the lipstick that culture seems to have drawn upon men. Population density lower early in evol. Humans do not focus on joints but extremities and facial feature.

  • Convex and concave angles of the elbows shift perception.

  • man i do this in real life cuz i got bad eye sight... i actually see it like this

  • I got a girl walking away for the first one, and a regular guy walking towards me for the 2nd and a skinnier guy walking towards me for the 3rd

  • It changed for me...

  • for me, all three were walking towards me

  • The reason the woman is walking away is because men are picturing her ass shaking while she's walking (which wouldn't be visible from the front).

  • there is one problem in that theory though, Sum men prefer boobs

  • and some men prefer men..

  • To everyone who is wondering about the "explanation" just go to the link in the video comment.

  • At First I couldn't tell if the "Female" Model was walking towards, or Away. but After watching it 3 Times I felt more comfortable with Away, and the "Male" Model I felt was coming Towards me. As for the third. Idk :D

  • no explanation or theory? bad vid.

  • Ehh I agree, interesting, but no explanation.

  • They all appeared to be walking toward me...

  • I think it's where you look on the character. If you look at the chest part, then it looks like they're walking away for all of them. If you look at the abdomen or waist, it looks like they're walking to you, kind of... I don't think it's really going to work but it works for me for some reason.

  • Who cares if mom's coming or not... I'm coming!!!

  • I think only prostitutes walk like 0:03-0:07...

  • All walking towards me. Once I read that they were walking away, they were walking away. In a way, a glorified optical illusion.

  • I see her walking to me.....

But still, there is only 2 people in my bed...

    ;)

  • Damn, I prepared to see the woman walk towards me but I still saw it as walking away.

  • Hm. I saw them all walking toward me...

  • newscientistvideo's videos are dealing with more and more trivial matters...

  • when i think of swaying hips, i think of a woman walking away from me. when i think of lumbering walk, i think of a man walking toward me. no cues = coin toss

  • I would like to know if vizual perception in humans detects edges in motion better then segmented central areas.

  • i dont understand these things, but good work!

  • wdf123, not every researcher is a physicist or biologist with the ability to work on cancer cures.

Anyways, I saw them all walking toward me.

  • People who are criticizing this are morons. This has to do with cognitive sciences, and how we perceive the world.

I for one find it very interesting.

  • how is this important? lets cure cancer first please kthx.

  • The girl walked away, the guy towards? Am i right ? =P

  • This is another joke right?

  • Only if you are color blind.

  • Alright, I love the scientific method and all but...

    IT'S A FUCKING STICK MODEL

When looking at a REAL PERSON, 100% see the man and woman walking towards them!!!

So, the data from the model shows some weird patterns... BUT THAT DOESN'T HAVE ANY FUCKING EVOLUTIONARY OR REAL SIGNIFICANCE BECAUSE ITS A FUCKING STICK MODEL!!!

  • The people surveyed were not stick models, and THEY ARE a product of Evolution.

  • THEY ARE ALL WALKING TOWORDS MEH

  • They all looked like they were walking toward me.

Not sure why there has to be an "evolutionary explanation" for this, as opposed to just a simple "explanation." There are all sorts of visual tricks the brains of some have difficulty interpreting.

  • Yeah dafttool, and there are evolutionary explanations for all of the "visual tricks" that the brain has difficulty understanding.

The brain has evolved to understand a very specific set of stimuli, and when those parameters are pushed, the brain doesn't function ideally.

This can help us understand how and why the brain evolved.

  • I have no problem with "evolutionary explanations," I just think sometimes researchers tend to overuse the phrase for effect, making broad, sweeping pronouncements that aren't always backed up by the evidence presented.

  • Evolution does a very good job of explaining a lot of things.. Especially physiology and psychology. And that is exactly why researchers use it a lot.

It isn't a pronouncement, but a hypothesis, that there "might be an evolutionary reason" for it. Hypotheses aren't meant to be backed up by the evidence because they are an initial guess. I'm sure that the next thing they'll do is figure out a way to test that hypothesis.

  • i thought they were all walking to me, i had to look hard to see the woman walking away

  • i saw the woman walking toward me and the man walking away

  • yep, all walking towards meh.

  • The comedian Gallegar did a whole bit on elbows and walking. In if your a cowbgirl, out if you a cowboy.

  • O_o...???

  • wow... Useless.. How about the Cure for Cancer? or AIDS? Or lab study on rats & radioactive waste?

  • How about we focus on more than one thing? don't you feel we have room for studies like this? Believe me, the issues you are talking about are being studied endlessly (which is, ofcourse, a good thing)...

  • The Ministry of Silly Walks at it again, eh.

The explanation could be as simple as: those groups who let (or made) their women walk in front of them into ambushes and hungry lions were more likely to survive. And paying attention and trying to identify approaching masculine (possibly aggressive) individuals might be a good idea in terms of survival, too.

How to test or find proof for this? No idea.

  • all 3 towards, i would have to agree with below.

oh dear, have we just debunked months of research?

  • away, towards, away, i think the direction of the knees seemed to trigger it.

  • I agree, the knees sticking out give an impression of approach. The elbows sticking out give an impression of walking away and the kneews seem dominant.

    1) knees together - away

    2) Knees apart - toward

    3) Knees neutral, elbows take over - away

  • all towards.

  • 2 towards me.

  • all towards me

  • All towards me! ... and my theory is there is no relation whatsoever with evolution, it's like a stupid cube drawn in perspective, you can always interpret it in 2 positions.

  • I see them all walking towards me..

  • The elbows trick you

  • all 3 towards

  • all 3 were coming towards me.. wow cool video

  • I don't get it.

  • away, away, towards

  • Lol braincheck pls.

  • that's hot!

  • away towards towards

  • I see all three models coming and going.

If you think they are going then your are gonna see them going. If you think they are coming then you are gonna see them coming.

It's just a matter of perspective, because all three models are ambiguous in terms of what is the direction of their movement, so our brain may resolve the ambiguity on either of both ways.

  • all towards me

  • same

  • weird...

  • video is nice, but completely VAPID! what's the conclusion, how is evolution related to this? Put some substance in here

  • The idea is to click on their link and go to their site. These vids are just teasers.

  • For me, it looked like the first one is going away, the other two are coming towards me

  • both are coming >.>

  • this video was kinda dumb...

  • oh shit lol

  • ye i too saw her come towards me

  • to me both of them come towards me

  • same here.

  • me too

  • I saw the first woman walking closer and couldn't for the life of me see her walking away...

  • same

  • T'was the opposite for me. I found it impossible to see her walking toward the screen.

  • wtf? i see the first one walking towards me, too

  • I thought both of them walked towards me to be honest.

  • i saw the tem all walking away

  • really? :O

  • Interesting
