thie bet rules. ironically, when free and a.j. left 106 & park, this bet died, and around the same thing, the real mtv died and stopped playing music videos
In October 1979, Prince released his self-titled album Prince, which scored #4 on the Billboard R&B charts "I Wanna Be Your Lover". was one of the hits. (on 55 seconds of this clip.)
you hit the nail on the head.....i barely watch BET anymore. the only thing i watch is 106th & park because they're the only show that still plays music videos. sad but true. they need 2 bring back the classics like video vibrations, video soul, planet groove, rap city, midnight love, and hit list. it's just not the same anymore now that the classics are gone. they need to come back. i miss the old days.....like CRAZY!!!!
Please tell me somebody what is the name of the song that's playing at 2:06?I really like the vibe and jazzy feel to it.I really miss watching how R&B used to be very
THIS is a special I'm SOOOO glad BET aired in late 1999, although I still wish they dwelled MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH more on the R&B/Funk/one hit wonders of the early 1980s, and their whereabouts, as well as old footage PRIOR to Donnie Simpson's arrival. Thank you to DEATH for posting this! I'd give ANYTHING to own EVERY SINGLE music video BET aired from 1980 through 1989!
I would give anything to get the early episodes (especially when Virgil Hemphill was hosting the half hour video soul from 1981-83) of Video Soul and Video Vibrations. BTW, someone posted a video from Switch that was taped on Video Vibrations in 1984 (yeah, Alvin Jones talks through the end of the video too).
Brownsugar956 , thank you for sharing this important piece of musical history. Watching this makes me realize how much BET has really fallen off. The first 20 years are what I would consider the golden years. After that, everything else is just...........................
wow!!! i almost forgot how important bet WAS. there were so many great artist getting exposer back then. now only a handful of r& b artist get that kind of shine.
I think people talk down on the station now because it's not how it used to be as with all so called music based channels. It's all about reality shows. But I would take these stars over todays stars.
True. But the quality of artists is horrible. So when music went bad of course radio and music based stations would have to follow. But BET plays eveybody, even legends that aren't selling records like they use to. They always give artists love and air time.
I miss BET from 1987 (when my father first got cable) to 1999. BET sold out in 2000. The white boys owned it now. You notice that when a white distribution company owned BET, it's crap now? Before Viacom, BET was more BLACK, more URBAN, now it's sold out!
Because it's all about money these days. They don't care. They only care about keeping up with the mainstream. Back in the day BET showed ALL urban artists. They did not discriminate like they do now. There are only a select few over 30 yr old artists that they support. It's all tap dancing Bob Johnson's greedy fault.
YEah my mom resemble Natalie Cole at the end i finally see it after yearsof her trying to convince me...i think its the hair

Would it kill BET to devote 1 hour per week for a show that plays all the classic videos, and air it when people are actually awake.

That's not true at all. BET does not show ALL artists love. They have definitely fell off. No if's,and's or but's about it.
This clip is seriously depressing seeing what was and where we are now. I miss the 80s and 90s sooooooo much.:(
