Great instruction, but one suggestion. In industrial sewing after you have pinned the folded edge over the lap you actually lift upper fabric and sew the rough edge only against the zip. Then you sew the top decorative stitching. Particularly good for jeans.
I rarely utilize the basting technique for sewing in a zipper. Most of the time, I utilize small pins to hold the fabric in place and to give me a good indication of measurements for my sewing points without having to utilize tracing paper or light chalk marks (occasionally). However, I will try implement the basting technique above for future zippers. I usually baste at home and finish sewing with a sewing machine at school. All the different techniques are useful.
Excellent video! I've done lapped zippers (which I prefer to centered) only with flat pieces without rest of seam sewn. Didn't know one could do this until the pattern directions, which were rather unclear, said to do it. This made it totally clear and it came out beautifully! I would advise skipping the tape step, though. Even basting should be enough and the tape is hard to remove. Thanks for the video!
now i noticed she's using light color thread for the sewing too. i assume she's doing this so we can see where and what she's sewing. but in a real project you use matching or dark threads right?
Thank you for the perfect video. I've read the instructions on my zipper over and over and have watched several zipper videos before finding yours. Yours was easy to follow and the lapped zipper looks much nicer.
you gotta have the seam allowance first. so she starts with 3/4 inch and shorten one side to 1/4 inch so that the seam 3/4 cover the zip. if you dont have the seam allowance just put in a invisibly zip

Can you tell me if there's a reason for this zipper as opposed to a railroad zipper? Is there a 'when to use this'?
