They are the best of the best and are trained for combat insertions via Single Occupant Exo-Atmospheric Insertion Vehicles, basically, the equivalent of paratroopers. When the covies attacked New Mombassa the only large defensive force in the area was the NMPD. After most of them pulled out the ODSTs were dropped in. The remaining police assisted the troopers. In this scene the Police are evacuating them with a NMPD pelican.

nope, that's why it's a cooperative(computer/player) game, like rainbow six. if they had shield, they would completely rape the convenant, but those are just special troopers which comes in team of 4 and need each others. While master chief with a shield can rape an army.

Spartans could kick ass w/ or w/o their armor. However they were genetically & technologically altered. In First Strike The MC realizes he is special, but a soldier is a soldier no matter what. i think they do. anyways, yep spartans were like an ultimate big tank. Usually MC is the one taking 75% of the covenent destruction, since their mission are "retrieve, protect and destroy. trooper were to defend or attack specific spot. MC was the break through for the offense.

get it right, spartans are genetically altered and were raised from childhood to be prepared for almost any battle situations. ODST's are completely human, just hardened through their training, more so than regular marines. Spartans are picked first. No spartans, then ODSTs. No ODSTs, then marines
