  • I do believe that mobile computing will push desktops into the margins of yesteryear. Mobile could be the 5th generation of computing as devices are getting more and more powerful and capable. Quad-core Tegra 3? Epic. Lightweight, powerful, adaptive. Don't stop the change.

  • Well I can't imagine me plugging in my 5.1 speakers, racing steering wheel and Track IR into my phone to play some of my games. So no, mobiles wont replace PC.

  • I think we will have many computers. We will have larger non-mobile or semi-mobile computers at homes, ones we use in our cars, ones we carry on our person & they won't be considered competing with each. It will just be considered normal to have some sort of computing/communciation/entertainment device with you wherever you are. Size being determined by convenience. It's already somewhat like that now.

  • Desktop PC's will not die out. The amount of processing power is vastly different. It would be like comparing a husky to a chihuahua.

In the mainstream world, it may die off in say ~30 years. But professionally, there are industries that without PC's, the industry would basically disappear.

oh and to every smartphone user.. it's not windows or apple software. welcome to linux :3

  • Didn't desktop PCs stop being mainstream a while ago losing popularity to Laptops. I can easily imagine the same thing happening with tablets and phones.

I can't imagine PCs ceasing to exist as there will always be people who need that power but I can see them possibly being niche product.

  • Will mobile kill desktop?

Apple Mac user: Yes. You could do everything in a mobile next 5 years mobile will replace it.

Windows PC user: Never gonna happen. Only a fraction of pc work can be done on a mobile.

  • Try and tell me PCs are dying when you see purpose in being on the move. I know for a darn fact that it's completely useless to even consider the industry to be dying when you have the big guys requiring ridiculous amounts of computing power, harddrive space or other extremely high end equipment.

Till those industries die off altogether you're not gonna see PCs "dying" - changing in terms of availability and becoming something of a cult icon, perhaps, but dying is far from the right term.

  • Tablets and Laptops will kill desktops ... Building your own Gaming Rig will Die off because of services such as Onlive which allows you to stream high end games. The only reason I see desktops surviving are , business use and Digital Development such as 3d modelling, video editing, science ECT.

  • You don't get home and start thinking damn i wanna play my iPod you want to be playing on your PC or Console, only time I touch my iPod is when I'm on public transport.

  • I don't know that Asus transformer prime is pretty frikkin sweet

  • I think the "hardcore Pc's" wont die out, but the consumer Pc's will.

  • are you drunk rodney?

  • i really hope the personal computer system is not dying, i love it so much. i think the pads and handheld devices today are really "new." it would probably take a long time for the pc to phase out completely, until mobile devices can be up to par

  • It's a total mismatch!!!!

  • No won't happen no time soon.

  • Yes, it's coming eventually.

  • Hard to see these things currently on a market to replace pc. In fact,pc can replace many of current things on a market: can control it with touch, speech, handheld control device,movement..use it for gaming, have million different accessories with it. It can be big,small,stationary,portable.. Powerful and capable or build to accomplice simple tasks or build for some special purpose. Multipurpose multifunctional device, which changes as technology does.

  • Mobile devices will never outlast PCs. One thing that CAN be done with a PC (at least in theory) that you can't do with a cellphone is protect it from a high-altitude EMP attack and still use it in the aftermath. Relying on these phones at this time is a BAD BAD idea. And so are these "open air" cases. We need to prepare guys. Faraday Cages FTW.

  • I find it extremely annoying to try to complete pc tasks on a phone or Ipad

  • Probably the best line of reasoning would be that personal computers will evolve into something different, but have the same functions.

  • It's out for those that just want to surf the net, watch movies, and gossip. Individuals that love gaming, video & photo editing, and even businesses that are reliant on applications to make money will have a need for the personal computer... I'm surprised that someone like you would be so negative, maybe it's just an overreaction on your part. Mobile devices are here to stay and will keep improving, but to say it will kill the personal computer seems way to extreme. .

  • NEVER. Try to fps game on a mobile device, try to render any video on a mobile device.

  • Mobile devices will only be popular with the low-level-common-user as a primary platform. For instance, allot of girls I know on my facebook account only access the internet on their phones and others via laptop. however, true PC gamers, average and high level class of development/production/etc.. will always be desktop until a more powerful and efficient method is made. Tabs/Pads, phones and Laptops may be convenient but have a very short life span and seriously lack the power of a desktop.

  • maybe adroid will but not any apple crap

  • Saying mobile devices will kill the PC is like saying gas-miserly hybrids will be the end of high performance sports cars.

  • I sure as hell wanna stay stationary while I play Battlefield 3 on my PC.

  • Bull Crap... Sure, we will see the growth and overall adoption of mobile devices. But many people want and/or rely on having the most power possible. 3D Rendering for example: more power will be demanded infinitely. Something that took an hour to render, two years ago, now takes 20 minutes, on today's hardware. Because of that, creators will be more and more ambitious with their projects, and demand more power still. No mater what happens, the traditional desktop will always be more powerful.

  • No. Because size will always have a big influence on the power that you can get at any given price point.

  • There is allso a thing called laptop...its mobile.

  • Since technology is always evolving, I can see mobile devices and stationary devices meeting somewhere in the middle someday. Imagen an OLED Screen folded up in your pocket with a alienware the size of an ipad in your bag, and an OCZ NIA type device as a controller.

  • For a casual market, maybe so but defiantly not for everyone

  • No way!

  • It will take at least another 20 years til we will know. Mobil devices today are very slow compared to PC. You can do Email but you can´t do Photoshop. Also the usability is a pain and working or gaming is not ergonomic with this devices.

  • Pc wont die until tablets get as powerful as a well built gaming computer and start being able to play games other than flash games.

  • I think the better question is if, the desktop (not pc) is dying. Yes of course the smartphone, tablets and other small devices are already killing the desktop. This is not a dumb question, alot of people here don't know what they are talking about. Yes, developers and so forth, will still develop on the desktop but consumer wise, the desktop market is already losing major share to smaller electronic devices (tablets, smartphone, laptops).

  • 3000 and 4000 $ for a gaming pc ? you must mean a enthousiast overclocker pc ^^

why would somebody want to play a videogame on a small 10 inch screen instead of a 50inch tv with surround sound that takes you into a game a experience I got a mobile device wich has windows and some stupid games on there .. but i don't think your really a gamer when ur playing angry birds just sayin' .. and rodney i cannot log in on your site, i already registered my email once, tried resetting pasword no mail .

  • well to me my pc will not be dead untill i can run wow and and swtor mmos on a mobile device at 100 plus fps

  • @3DGAMEMAN there are 2 polls numbered #130

  • Haha! had to laugh right now, portable stuff taking over for fat-ass desktops? Aint gonna happen, the market might be larger and the portables more powerful, but still.

  • dude, pc wont die, tablets still suck, in about 10 yrs maybe, but by then, pc desktop will float and wipe my ass, cant beat that

this is the one video ive seen from you, that suxs

  • @Stewieguy187 lol i like that a pc that will float and wipe your ass

  • 1500 for a gaming computer? I can understand that but I've been building systems for people and haven't had to really spend more then 600 on parts

  • 1500 is about right for a real one

  • @thereddog223

    AMD A8-3870K $145

    MSI A75A-G55 FM1 AMD A75 $110

    CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB $90

Western Digital Caviar Blue 500gig $90 (sadly hdds are expensive as hell right now)

    xfx 6870 1 gig $180

    cd/dvd drive lets say $30

Not going to include psu on this list because that can easily depend on the case soo lets say $100(average case with a psu) let's not forget rebates and all of that

soo that's a total 745, I guarantee you that will play anything.

  • Not crysis on max settings

  • @thereddog223 really doubt that because I played crysis max settings back when I had my two 4870's

  • I doubt that cause I have two gtx 260s which were faster and only got 30 fps on a 19 inch monitor

  • @thereddog223 Completely honest exact monitor size (1440x900) if I remember right. got 30 at full settings. If I still had the cards I'de show you the results.

  • OFC they will kill PCs in their current format one day. Selling-point of todays desktops is that they have a more comfortable design for for heavy workloads such as long texts and anything that require a large display. They are also more more powerful than mobile devices and are thus more suited for heavy gaming and rendering. One day we will reach a pont where power will exceed demand and mobile devices will be able to do the same as desktops. The desktop will either change or be unneccecary.

  • PC's are already mobile, ever heard of a laptop/notebook?

  • Just one more thing to reiterate on that I didn't say before. The PC wont die as part of people transitioning from PC to mobile to end PC for good. Instead things are becoming more affordable and this is basically the tech generation. You're going to see more people buying mobile since their good for the most basic stuff and medium spec stuff is cheaper. A lot of people already buy external monitors/keyboards/mice for mobile devices, tech people that is. No it will not die, it will be sectioned.

  • I can't play Starcraft 2 or Battlefield 3 on a stupid tablet. Pretty sure mobile devices will never surpass the raw power of desktop devices.

    So NO.

  • Gaming ON an iPad ? GTFO ->.

Show me metro 2033 with Eyefinity 3 displays.

Mobile devices are just not made 4 games and heavy software, they have limited power(battery),

limited or NO cooling and a touch screen, how are you going to play a FPS on a touch screen ?

BUT ! 4 internet browsing, and some lite applications they are ideal.

  • Portable devices will probably surpass PCs in consumer sales but PCs are still required for too many tasks that require raw computing power.

  • Is this a serious question? :L Sounds like someone a super apple fanboy would say...

  • @Roland0314 your correct bro.

  • @Roland0314 something*

  • If it was not for PC mobile devices would not be hear.

  • Maybe in about 10 years.

  • Most run too hot. Less expandability/hw upgrades.

It's not dying. It's just that there is a peak of what you can actually use or need in terms of PC specs. Were @ quad core/hexa core cpus, insane ram space/massive storage/crazy clocked gpu's. There will always be a market for this stuff, but I believe this will further companies transitions into mobile computing. Having that reach it's peak. Their now making slimmer laptops.

  • Simple. They won't.

  • Evan Star Trek still had Tablets, tricorders and big computers to power the holodeck. Maybe cloud computing services alike Onlive would allow consumers to not have to own the big expensive hardware, but that would suck if it were the only option.

  • @captaincough And looking at the comment section you will easily see consumers want to own the big powerful hardware and not just rent a service.

  • No , PCs will last forever , because the PCs are meant to be more powerfull than portable devices .

  • not so fast ..

  • Nah, PC is just so much more powerful for gaming/server/photoshop etc

It will be good for browsing the interwebs though

  • no not enough speed

  • Mobile crap will never have the same potential of desktop PC, at least for the next 50 years?

PC Will continue to evolve for gaming, video editing, work.

  • @Breeleyspec

Consoles are already killing the PC/Desktop. Consumers that aren't gamers aren't going to give a crap about "PC Gaming". Developers have already moved away from PC gaming all together, all the PC gets is console ports.

  • Never, will never happen in the next 10 years, unless all the christians go extinct.

  • First something big comes. Then it goes smaller.

  • Voted nope, never.

  • NOPE SIR. PC HAZ MOAR STUFFS, LIKE HL2 AND COOLS SHIZZLE. BRUV.

  • I would say never

  • Nope i dont think so
