We have also had two in the private schools in Utah as well. The whole LFA clearly shows a cost double the savings by year thirteen when all private school students would have a voucher.
No I am not spreading misinformation. KSL made some severe mistakes and based information on the belief the voucher program would be five years.
Take a look at coolestfamilyever[dot]com/2007/10/18/voucher-math/ and /2007/10/21/voucher-math-part-2/
Another good one is: steveu[dot]com/blog/2007/10/vouchers-q.html - Rep. Urquhart states "The legislative fiscal analysis just looks at costs, not the avoided costs...The analysis does not include local funding (property tax) which provides nearly half of education's funding. That money is all savings."
Again, KSL still stands by its report and stating they have retracted it is 'untrue'.
Teachers are very much against Vouchers. They care about the safety and education of children Teachers should be licensed and tracked by the state so we don't get any felons around the kids. The Voucher Act has a background check but no standards for what they must do when they find a felon applying.
Remember KSL has issued a retraction on their website because Piatt was basing the True/False on the first five years.
Several teachers I know (including family members) will be voting for Ref. 1. The notion that private schools hire criminals is preposterous. Call around as I did, and you'll find that they all run background checks on those they hire. Not to mention the fact that background checks obviously aren't perfect - think of all of the recent (public school) teacher sex scandals in Utah.
It seems you are spreading some misinformation or misunderstood KSL (please post a link to the retraction, if it exists). If you go to the story (type "Truth Test School Voucher Ads Deciphered" in the KSL search box), it has NOT been retracted. The only disclaimer at the top of the story is that they were not the source of a mailer related to the story that some people, somehow, thought came from KSL (I have the mailer and don't know how they thought such). The story stands.
Who decided that the GOVERNMENT gets to decide what values are legitimate to teach our kids? The GOVERNMENT which can't do anything right is determining our children's curriculum. What if my child's teacher is failing the students? Why can't I put my child in a Montessori school, or a liberal arts school, or a school with an emphasis on sports or music? Other countries give those options to parents. Do I have to just shut up and take it?
You can put your child in the afore mentioned schools. It's not a question of where you can send your kids, it's a question of whether taxpayers should have to fund private education now, as well as public. Perhaps you could tell me why public funds should be used for private education.
Opposition to referendum 1 is primarily funded by teacher unions. They are the primary financial beneficiaries of our failed education system. They are not representing the needs of children and parents: They represent the financial interests of teachers and armies of bureaucrats. Any attempt at changing the status quo is vehemently opposed.

Our university system is far more successful than primary eduction in the U.S. because the money follows the student.

Because it is cheaper and more effective and it is still accomplishing the same goal that the public system is trying to accomplish.
