Remember going to my dad's when I was 3 yrs. old and begging him to play this on his juke box for me!! Somehow even at that age I could relate to this song!! Thanks for the great memories!!
Rick Derringer 3 biggest songs Hang on Sloopy, Rock & Roll Hochie coo, and Hulk Hogans WWF theme Real American... He also played lead guitar on many Kiss albums... Hell of a guitar player.
In the 1960's I was the base Disc Jockey at Orlando AFB. This was one of the most requested songs...there was a girl we used to cal SLOOPY....she was real nice looking and a great dancer...whereever you are Sloopy - hope you are well - thanks for the memories...........
It would be another 35 years or so before I was born, but this song is far-and-away better than any of the songs of "my generation" (the '90s, 2000s). Kinda sad, really, 'cause the music is only getting worse...
I love the 2nd verse of this song! I always feel like I'm the only one who knows about it, even among the people I know who were around then. I don't understand why this version isn't commonplace now, it doesn't make it *that* much longer.
I mean, I know it was cut due to time constraints, but once radio stations stopped caring about that, it should have come right back as the standard version.
Derringer not his real last name... born and raised 20 miles from Neil Armstrong god you have to love ohio..... btw "Ricky don't loose that number " was about him.....
I wore this 45 out when I was a kid. When I got older I suddenly realized the last verse describes an intense love scene climaxing with the AHHHH scream. That was a day of awakening.
What a huge, huge song this was in 65.. .WLS Chicago played this constantly. What great memories...I was a HS senior. Love to go back...just for..... a little while !!
Ha ! I was 14 in 1965 we use to ride our sting-ray's around Old South Omaha and watch and listen to all the garage bands pump out this tune all summer. What a great time to have been growing up..
I don't know why my local radio station doesn't play this version of this song. It's less than 4 min long. Also the lyrics posted here lacks the second verse.
sloopykins, paging sloopykins, your daddy is looking for you hunni, he says you are not getting your allowance until you finish his massage, and he's excitedly anticipating the "happy ending", so hurry back to dear old dad, he needs ya hunni! ;o)
May have already looked into McMcoys history by now, but Rick Derringer who wrote Rock & Roll Hoochie Coo later in the 70's, was the main guitarist in this band.
Jimmy Page never played with these guys unless he was an uncredited session musician. He was pretty well known by this time so I doubt it.
However he was a member of the Yardbirds along with other notables as Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton.
Don't mean to sound like a know it all.., I'm just full of all kinds of useless information. ;-)
The chord changes and the basic beat and notes are the same as many songs including Righteous bROTHERS 'YOUVE LOST THAT LOVING FEELING" where instead of yah yah yah counter point they sang bABY BABY BABY counterpoint, SUMMER NIGHTS FROM gREASE ETC
Wow it's been what - about 44 years? - since I last saw that goofy album cover in a store. Was a kid then, thought it was "hang on Snoopy" when first heard it. Didn't get the sexual angle of the final verses at that time! Later I knew Rick Derringer as an awesome guitarist who tore it up with Johnny Winter.
The McCoys' drummer did not actually play on this track. It was, in fact, the legendary Bernard "Pretty" Purdie (uncredited, as usual). After numerous takes, Producer Wes Farrell told Purdie, "Not crude enough. I want you to sound like a 15 year-old white kid". Purdie did 5 more takes that were deemed "too good" before he suggested that Farrell tie one arm behind his back. The next take was the one you hear on record.
@rwells47 Hey Ron, thanks for another great one... never knew Rick Derringer was the lead singer for these guys. Still one of my all-time favorites from this era. Sweet, simple, yet powerful, the way it builds to that great crescendo - and love that guitar solo from RD!
@aharperable The story goes: Betty Sloop (an Ohio piano player) was playing a gig in New Orleans where she was down on her luck. She met two guys from Cincinnati Ohio (the McCoys?) who told her to "hang on sloopy" Thus the song hook
