@cjh666 sure is...I'm going back to the Scott Walker version, this is simply horrible on pretty much every level. And that's from someone who thinks Marc Almond is actually quite talented. I hope he did penance after performing this.
Mmm...a lot of critical comments by people who will probably then switch back to watching Lady Ga Ga and not see any irony? He is a showman just like she is! They don't always nail a Live performance(and this ain't one of his best) but it's better than needing a computers assistance to sing at all...like some do.
sorry but i have to say i like his voice and i think he just sings with soul and sincerity this great song , only with his own sensibility. He emphasizes the camp/kitsch side of it all.Of course one can see the heavy influence of Scott Walker but then ...i guess one could say the same about Nick Cave, among others.
Being totally unfamiliar with and having no biases pertaining to Marc Almond, I feel comfortable saying that this is really, really awful. I cannot understand what pleasure anyone could derive from listening to or watching this performance. If the Brel estate is praising this, it must have made them some scratch.
The detractors may chat until the cows come home (although some of them are the cows, with all due respect for the ruminant bovines!). Who cares for their opinions when the Brel's estate praises MARC ALMOND as the greatest living performer of Brel's work! A case of sour grapes, methinks!
When Brel's wife starts publishing poetry and composing music in Chanson style about the bourgeoisie maybe then her opinion will have some legitimate weight, until then it's an opinion of no greater merit than any other.
In the meantime, it'd be nice to hear Marc actually keep in tune during the chorus for once.
There are as many non-musical reasons as there are musical ones to come out in favor of Marc Almond.
Marc Almond has sold over 30 million recors worldwide and has inspired with his work and distinctive performance style the likes of Antony Hegarty, Patrick Wolf, Divine Comedy (yes, real musicians!) to name but a few. I find it extraordinary when people make a big deal of a few faults in Almond's voice and accept the strangled cats fronting some of the most prominent bands or the helium voices of other popstars. At least he's humble enough(too humble) to describe himself as an erratic performer.
First you suggest that M.Almond sings out of tune, but in the same breath you argue that there are reasons both musical and otherwise to speak in his favour: an inconsistent comment to say the least. Still his version of this song was a Top 20 hit (few more people than Brel's estate, who I believe includes more family than just his widow). Not to mention that a lot of people born after 1970 got to know Brel through Almond (I'm one of them)
yea i knew had to be making that 'tongue in cheek' comment...i subscribe to your vast collection of his videos...and for that i thank you....again! I am kinda surprised it has been two months and nobody put a 'thumbs down' or whatever to the comment. Maybe everybody knows who you are now LOL
Marc Almond can only dream of coming anywhere close to Scott version of this, he also copied almost exactly the arrangement on Scott's version, the dancing girls weren't a good addition at all, Great backing band,,, and Brel's version is wonderful too.
jcronk please believe me,when Scott Walker was born, before he was passed to his mothers arms, he was already a genious, people like this are born this way ,no amount of practising ,can make them any better, nurture or nature? Nature surely.
Marc Almond does the best performance of the English version of this song I've seen. I mean, he's not Brel, but the English lyrics are pretty different from the French lyrics, and I'd call it a different song. I don't think it can be emphasized enough that Almond's performance is way better than that shitty, pretentious hack Scott Walker.
Dont talk rubbish each to their own, I have played the Walker version to a friend who remebers when it was released by him and the impact it had. Im sure if Walker could be tempted to sing this with this backup of musicians it would blow this version away.
please Jcronk, you are not seriously proposing that this performance even comes close to scott walkers interpretation,? scott is a racehorse, grazing in a field ,full of donkeys.
Scott Walker is a pretentious ass. He is a terrible songwriter, and his only claims to fame are his teeny-bopper hits and the lame interpretations of Jacques Brel's songs. Jacky isn't Walker's most laughable Brel cover, but it's close. At least Almond's version doesn't feel like a put-on. I don't dig his other stuff, but here, he clearly outshines Walker.
Marc Almond is so tallented, his music is great, he has made so many great albums, Marc and the Mambas etc.

Have nothing against Marc Almont, but this song is so wordy that the only thing that can keep you with it is a very strong passionate voice.

Regardless of which version you prefer, if it brings Marc Almond, Brel or even Scott Walkers work to a wider audience then it's good.
Scott Walker for me though.
