Killer song. Back in my college days, a girlfriend accused me of using sex as a weapon. Sadly, that does not happen anymore. Thanks for posting, and making me feel for 4:15 like 19 again.
Sadly Pat's "WORDS" went on deaf ears.... we are so over blown w/ sex - figuratively in media that it has no meaning. Maybe the human race will mature mentally past adolescense but, not holding my breath for that one...I challenge society for that surprise
When this was released in England I didn't know whether to buy the 7", the 12" or the album (Seven The Hard Way). In the end I bought all three!!! FANTASTIC song and video. My favourite all-time PB song.
I absolutely love this video! Pat Benatar is infinitely more talented than any of the girls you see on TV today. Pat has never needed to do anything crazy or stupid to get attention. A lot of today's celebrities should take a lesson from this! It's tasteful and fun without being a sick, twisted, and pathetic mess like Lady Gaga or Beyonce.
saw Pat on Tuesday night in Philly...at 58 she has lost very little, age has been infintely better to her than most 80s rockers. She is a world class talent, and when you see her live, you forget just how many top 40 hits she had - the set list was a monster!
I love how towards the end of the video, Pat puts a picture of herself up from the early days when she was marketed as a sex symbol. She looks at it and shakes her head.
Although free love was no longer around in the 80's with the scares placed upon that generation with the AIDS epedemic this song rings true! It was not uncommon to go to alot of parties and always score every weekend with a new girl! I miss the 80's! I am glad I was able to be there through high school and college! There will never be a better decade again!
Pat Benatar is one of the only singers who doesnt get wasted every night. She is not a slut. She is not a drunk. And she has kids she loves and she has only been married once.
This song is a very great and deep song. Its about rape. Its very sad. Im 11 year old girl. I take this seriously. Its true. People out there dont care if they hurt you.
@pikafan21 Sorry but this song is not about rape. It is about peer pressures and using this in a relation to prolong the relationship or begin one. You may want to look at your local laws and read the wording of rape as defined by your states legislatures. This song which is much older than you are I remember on the radio when it came out. It should be a lesson to the ladies to not fall for a guys every swift line he throws at them to get them in bed.
@msheron I agree with you that this song isn't about rape, but your interpretation isn't completely correct either. This song is a thinly veiled criticism by Pat towards her record company at the time, Chrysalis Records. Chrysalis was demanding that Pat "sex up" her image to sell records, whereas Pat wanted to rely up on her vocal abilities instead. Pat is accusing the record company of using "sex as a weapon" as a tool of manipulation against her.
i have a cousin who is called Pat (Patricia) but the poor does not even know the existence of Pat Benatar... i think that i'm on a mission... is there a Madonna without a Pat Benatar... it's not so sure.... Pat had cut all along the jungle of pop before the others wild 80s female....she was already there to give subtile lessons...
Dam bytchatar, women are the weaker sex, Tryin' to de-masculine de man ... nice try daughter of eve of the apple of the garden of eden. Now go back to using sex as a weapon ...
Dam bytchatar! women are weaker sex and can't drive, Tryin' to de-masculine de man ... nice try offspring of Eve. Now go back to using sex as a weapon ...
ah fuck they had a put an advert of that bitch gaga right before pat. Almost puked, especially with that bieber background image shit. I mean wtf is wrong with those vevo people.
''With looks that kill and a mind that's twisted'' -The smaller the understanding of the situation, the more pretentious the form of expression.- Therefore, 'Stop using sex as a weapon' :)
This video was also a small slap in the face to Chrysalis Records for giving her such a hard time early on (and for so long...) about how she "needed to look" in order to be liked and taken seriously in the music world in order to sell records.
I totally loved this song AND video. (I haven't seen the video in 25 years, but I remember it.) That "bop" dance step was rather popular in the 80s (Belinda Carlisle did it too...)
I love the way the song/video has a kind of weariness and disapproving tone to it - about sleazy marketing and sex selling everything - whilst at the same time musically sounding like it would not be out of place at a poll dancing establishment!
80s videos like this were ahead of their time......todays directors/ producers of videos could never come up with anything this good, even with all the best equipment they have these days.....
The record company didn't give them enough time to finish their albums, they were on a strict every 9 months new album schedule and by the time this 7th album, aptly titled 7 the Hard Way was released, things got bad between them and Chrysalis. It's all in Pat's new book, Between a Rock & a Heart Place. Great insight into being female in the 80's music scene. The album only had 9 songs and most were not to their satisfaction. Definitely affected sales as well as the charts.
2.20 THAT looks just like one of Madonna's Blond Ambition bustiers. Pat saw aready in mid 1980's that madge would use 'sex as a weapon'. Also she looks just like Lady Gaga so PAT was 25yrs ahead of her time. Sadly no-one listened her warnings...
I totally forgot about this song!!!! *sigh*, The summer of '84...Cindy come back and pick me up in your Plymouth Horizon, and we'll go to a USFL game in NJ...
Great video though I was mad at the time because this was played on the radio..when Eurythmics' "Sex Crime" was not because the word sex was used... hmm.
Great vid anyway, the security camera interferences, the product ads, the peep eyes, the crude drawings and Pat as a 70s glam goddess!
If you like those video effects, try watching the videos for Honeymoon Suite's "Feel It Again" and ZZ Top's "Velcro Fly". They were all directed by the same person using the same video production technique.
I definitely agree! She´s the best!
