I was too young at the time to realize that Gorgon, who scared the crap outta me, and Icky Twerp, who I loved, were played by the same guy! I think he was also the program director and sports writer for channel 11. Those days you could do that. Those days were more fun.
I vaguely remember Nightmare from when I was 4 or 5 years old. I watched it with my dad and brother, and liked the fact that they were older cause I never could have watched it alone. Very spooky for a kid that age. The only conversation I remember was one of them saying 'It's Icky Twerp' (behind the makeup and character). You'd never know it was the guy from Slam Bang Theatre. He was a totally different character. Thanks for posting, as I never thought I'd see it again.
As a kid, I once got to meet Gorgon at an open house on Halloween night. He greeted me holding a skull filled with candy corn and intoned, "Would you like some candy? Bwahaha!" A few years later I was bowling at a local alley when I noticed Camfield in the adjacent lane. He must have seen me staring at him (Gorgon and Icky were two of my TV idols), so when I made my approach one time he burst out in his best Gorgon laugh, causing me to throw the ball in the gutter. What a great talent.
Wow! Like femmenik, I totally missed Gorgon and instead watched Icky Twerp in the mornings. I've wanted to see him for years and now I've gotten my first look! Thanks, richarddallankent, for posting this. This is truly priceless.
Everyone has said it already. I grew up in Fort Worth and watched Slam Bang Theatre but not much on the Gorgon / Nightmare (hard to think I missed it with only 4 or so channels) . Sometimes I am blown away by what I find on the internet/youtube. It is incredible!!! Thanks to the likes of richardallankent for sharing so many wonderful things that would otherwise just fade away.. at least for the masses.. I can show my son .. (8 yrs old) perfect halloween treat (or trick?)
@femmenik I would beg....BEG..my parents to let me watch Nightmare. They would give in, and then I would be scared to death and sneak into my sister's room and she would let me sleep in her bed. Great memories, aren't they?!! Of course you know, Gorgon and Icky Twerp were one in the same man, Bill Camfield. My sis and I used to argue about that!
Oh God that was great stuff! Gorgon was priceless!
Incidentally, it was on Nightmare that I first saw those great Universal Monster Movies: Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Dracula, The Mummy. My brothers and I would have to sneak downstairs in the dead of night to watch "Nightmare". Mom used to get SO UPSET when she caught us.
And every time Monster would appear, one of us would always dive behind the sofa to be safe.
It caused me to fear I should even wake up in the night. I'd keep my eyes tightly shut ever since I once saw a face on the wall and then another time in the doorway. I'd yell for Mom to bring a drink of water and keep my eyes SHUT until she came and turned on a light.
That intro, the theme music, and Gorgon's laugh were enough to scare the hell out of me and then I would watch the movies with my older brother and sometimes with my cousin. Results - I would have nightmares for the rest of the week. Somehow I would talk Mom into letting me watch it again. Thanks for posting this.

Someone should do a documentary on multitalented local TV stars like Bill. That or an entire series of 'docos' since people like Bill existed all across the United States in those days.
All of us kids watched Nightmare each weekend back in the 60's. It didn't matter if we never saw the end of the movie that went with it- we still loved it.

You don't happen to have a closing segment for the show do you? Thiw was amazing, Gorgon was by far the most creepy of all the hosts I've seen.

@sutekh22 I finally found his laugh. it's just as I remember. Creepy enough to send chills from head to toe.

Nobody had a laugh as great as Gorgon! I haven't heard it in over 40 years - what a great memory! Thanks for bringing it back.

Soo many nights I pulled the cover over my head after Nighmare Theatre. Gorgon scared the crap out of me.! But, it was a good scaring, a fun scaring.
Each morning I wouldn't miss Slam Bang Theatre and the Three Stooges. What a way to start your day with mayhem and laughter!
Kids are missing a lot these days. They are too sophisticated to appreciate Icky. We could be fooled. That's what made us so innocent.
I can't wait for the "great event" in Fort Worth!

I was a regular viewer of Slam Bang Theater in the 60s, but I was never allowed to watch Nightmare so I never saw any of these. Great find - thanks!

I went through my entire childhood without realizing that Gorgon & Icky Twerp were the same guy. Probably would've ruined them both for me if I did.

Wow! I barely remember seeing this as a little kid, but I remember being torn between thinking it was really cool and being scared to death!

Wow--thanks so much--those are great memories-looking back at these--didn't realize as a child of the 60's just how talented Bill was.
Nightmare was the coolest--do you have more? where is the Monkey????
