It's the 2.8L straight six; they didn't switch to the V6 until the 300ZX came out in 1984. The straight six is better in just about every way (my opinion) but it is difficult to package in most modern cars.
I think you're thinking of the Electromotive Datsun 280ZX that was raced in the IMSA GTU series. The ZX-R was advertised as having the same spoiler as the race car (as well as a decal package), however the ZX-Rs were not painted like the race cars.
I love my ZX its got the borg and Warner T-5 but yet its not a turbo. but still I Love it. its fast sleek and futuriffic fun, Even crusing up and down the street it is still Awsome!
The turbo was only available in automatic in 1981, the year it was released. After that, they were available with the 5-speed. My Datsun has the manual, and the Borg Warner T-5 tranny is great. However those three speed autos really cleaned up on the drag strip.
Well, the T-5 is a damn sight better than the stock Nissan tranny. The day I swapped mine was one of the happiest days of my life. Also, only the 1983 had the T-5. 81 and 82 were auto.

They were really trying back then.
While America was busy making Chevettes, 140 horsepower Camaros and putting drum brakes on ever rear axle in sight.
